The night wasn't especially chilly, and it seemed that so long as they stayed upon the path of the beam, the weather stayed mostly calm, so as the night approached the dawn, the fire had died down to a few glowing embers. Everyone lay curled up asleep, even Jake whose turn it was to stand watch. Can you blame the young lad, constant player? What true danger has this Ka-Tet yet faced? Ka and combat have not yet taught them to be wary, and the gunslinger Roland cannot be ever watchful in their stead.
Even if Eddie had been on watch and alert, and even had he seen the danger approaching, he would not have believed until it was too late. After all, hadn't he watched Jack Andolini be eaten alive by the Lobstrosities? For Eddie and his ka-tet to not yet know the extent of the Crimson King's power, nor the many worlds in which his influence grows. And this Jack Andolini comes from the Keystone world, where sometime later for the Ka-tet, he will fail in ambushing Eddie and Roland and lose most of his men in the battle. For him, the battle is fresh in mind and the idea of revenge dominates his every thought, feeding and festering upon him like some alient parasite.
There is one person in the camp; however, who is never entirely relaxed. If you asked Detta Walker what she thought of Susannah Dean, the first word you might get back would be "soft". The rest would be considerably less polite. The problem for Detta was that it was becoming harder and harder to exert control. If the attack had come any later, she may not have been able to exert control. As it happens; however, Detta is aware and in control as Jack Andolini carefully approaches the camp, with murder in his eyes.
She knows that revealing herself and her ability to take control of Susannah will result in the finall loss of self. She knows that Detta Walker will finally and forever cease to be a separate person. She knows that by accepting and acting upon the gunslinger's training she will be swallowed up forever into Sussanah, never to emerge again as herself, but still Detta reaches quietly for the heavy pistol with its sandalwood grip, careful not to wake any of the sleeping members of the Ka-tet. This was her job to do, even if it was to save some "honky mahfah".
The blast of the ancient revolver reverberated throughout the small valley in which the Ka-Tet was camped, immediately rousing everyone to their feet, guns in hand, nearly immediately to full alert.
Detta Walker looked to the gunslinger and let loose a laugh. "You owe me one now you honky mahfah!" she cried before Susannah reasserted control. Susannah looked at the gunslinger questioningly, as if coming to awareness from a fog, then turned her gaze to the body of Jack Andolini. A sudden realization of what had happened washed over her.
Raising herself up on what remained of her legs, Susannah turned to her Dinh and confessed "I have forgotten the face of my father. I was two women ... I who was and I who had no right to be. Now I am three women ... the one who was; the one who had no right to be; and now I am the woman you have saved. I thank you gunslinger."
