Diablo II meets Nethack Tournament

Other NetHack noobie qestions I can´t seem to find an answer for:

* When I use a scroll of identify, I know it has a varied effectiveness (1 - more items). Can you specifically ask for which item to identify? Is it any good to drop things with a lower ID priority (for me)? When I cast it, I get a look at my inventory, and I can click in squares next to the items (in the same manner as when I pick up or drop stuff). Can I determine what to identify here? And what if the scroll identifies more items than I click for?

Yes. Always pick one item - if you get more than that, the screen will simply come back up again and you can choose another. Amulets are the hardest useful items to effectively identify - rings can be dropped in sinks, wands can be used to zap and engrave to identify them, and armour, weapons and tools can be dropped on altars to ascertain their BUC status, and hence tried on for size.

Otherwise, weapons might be a good choice if you don't know their enchantment... or wands, if you really need to know how many charges they have left.

Bloody hell I was close. The unicorn horn didn't work in time, and I forgot you can pray up there. Ouch. Oh well, 2.5 million is a pretty godly score, even given the fact it would have more than doubled had I ascended. Ah well, better luck to everyone else...

Ouch :( but a nice effort anyways! Looks like I have some catching up to do.

Karin the Knight is looking very good at the moment. Used potions of gain level and incubi to get to level 30 before I've even entered Gehennom. She's got a +7 Frost Brand with a silver saber on the other hand, silver dragon scale mail, oilskin cloak, boots of speed, amulet of life saving, helmet of brilliance, rings of polymorph control and protection. Doesn't getting an early wand of wishing make a huge difference? (I still haven't gotten to the castle yet) Oh, and she's nealy maxed her stats - strength is 18/50, int is 16 base, everything else is maxed.

Given that the only thing that did me in last time was a freak occurence (the offending species has been dealt with accordingly), amd I'm a lot tougher this time round, I reckon I may be able to ascend her...

Karin is defineitely an ascension candidate, unless something untoward happens. She's just reached the inner sanctum, and I don't foresee her having any great problems from here - although I did have to 'waste' two wishes - one on an amulet of magic breathing to retrieve the Book of the Dead (I foolishly killed the Wizard of Yendor while he was over water) and the other on more candles for the Candleabrum (one short! stupid guy in Gnomish Minetown only sold two of the bloody things!) Anyway I have two amulets of life saving, I hope that's enough, and all my gear is enchanted as far as it will go.

Also I will need levitation or a dragon for the plane of air once I get to it... my stupid yellow dragon ate a doppelganger and turned into a yellow light!!! :grrr: and I drowned my poor leocrotta by riding it into a moat :uhhuh:

When you said that on the graphics one it's hard to get anywhere im wondering what you ment? I like the graphics one better than the other, not because it is more 21st centurary but its easier. You can right click an item and decide what to do with it plus much more choices that are easier to get through. for beginners instead of learning all the commands and what everything means they could just go the graphics version It may not give as much choices as the original game but im wondering what other people think about the graphics version of nethack and regular version....

Now I can go back to real life... :flip:

Congrats, brainfloss, on the ascension!
Now all you have left is to get a guardian.

Haven't advanced much myself. Been working and playing more with my D2 character (currently traveling around Kurast). Hopefully I can at least get that quest reward next go around, perhaps even further.

Just a minor update here:

Sarina, Lvl 31 Mageazon, A5N - Heading for Nihlathak (max 40)

Starting to really need mana badly. Traded out my 'stealth' armor for one socketed with sapphires. Found the great helm and greaves from Sigon's set and am wearing them to help with my ghastly AR. Strength is 71 (54 without charms), Dex around 55-60 with boosts, Life around 90, and mana is finally catching up in the mid 50s.

I plan to get her to level 40 and then do some more tries at Nethack. I feel confident that I can at least get my quest reward. And if I can get that, I might even be able to descend even further.

Haemus the wizard is on the plane of Air. Wizards are really hard at the start, but after you get a bunch of good spells you're in like flynn. I have (among others) magic mapping, identify, remove curse, cure sickness, cancellation, and dum dudda duh --Finger of Death--. of course with that last one I am kind of obliged to continue to wear my amulet of reflection instead of one of my amulets of life saving, but, what can you do. I fully believe this one will ascend.

Looks like there's been little action since brainfloss's ascension. I did, however, manage to get my D2 character out of normal difficulty, for this tournament's first Destroyer:

Destroyer Sarina, Lvl 37 Mageazon, A1NM

No neat item finds, but the cow level did drop a 35% MF ammy. Might replace my +15 energy +27 mana amulet later on.

Still haven't managed to get a Nethack character past both Sokoban and Mine's End since my highest scoring character. How's everyone else doing?

Nothing new to add, I haven't yet started my D2 character. Hopefully, we will continue to see some more high scores coming through, and more people in the tournament.

all right I admit it, this was just a bump in disguise

Alice gets somewhere!

Alice the nth was doing really quite well, I thought, until she was drowned by an electric eel. D'Oh! :grrr:

But Alice the n+1th is doing even better. Got a wish early on (while dipping my longsword in a fountain to get Excalibur), and after some thought went for blessed rustproof +2 gauntlets of power, which I haven't regretted - when Tyr gave me Mjollnir, it was thumping time! Nice being able to kill those pesky electric eels and cockatrices from range...

She got down to level 22 and was telepathically aware of Medusa (does reflection work on her stony gaze? Blindness?), but doesn't have any (known) means of crossing water, so lets hope one of these sets of boots is water walking (any way to test this without actually walking on water?). Having run out of space there, I finally felt brave enough to try the quest.

Turns out I could have done this a lot earlier - it was an absolute walkover, and the only problem I had was wondering why Lord Surtur disappeared every time I hit him. Since the Norn had told me to trust in Tyr, I tried praying and was immediately crowned (if I'd known that would happen, I wouldn't have done it), but Lord Surtur kept disappearing. Eventually I worked out that he was teleporting back to the stairs to heal! Since Mjollnir's damage is mostly lightning, I guess the Orb of Fate's half physical damage didn't help him much?

It is nice that you can go back to the quest levels after finishing it, as they're really quite comfortable. Just fire ants and fire giants as monsters, neither of which are a challenge, and the fire giants are actually quite tasty (Mmm, extra strength. Now up to 18/65. Not that I really need it with the Gauntlets, but it's an achievement thing).

If I get another wish though, I'll be seriously tempted to get a blessed bag of holding - Sokoban had the ammy of reflection, and I now have just two regular sacks, so that I can have half my junk in each, and go up stairs by dropping one at the bottom, going up, dropping the other (NOT on the stairwell), down, pick up, up, and get the other. This is somewhat of a nuisance! Luckily yellow dragon scale mail isn't that heavy (why Yellow? 'cos I found a yellow dragon and a scroll of enchant armour!). Scrolls and potions can make up a surprising amount of weight!

I ended up using a scroll of enchant weapon and a potion of confusion to rustproof (and repair) Mjollnir after it got down to thoroughly rusty thoroughly corroded. It's a good thing that that didn't seem to affect its lightning damage!

And then I saved and went to bed.

Mugh 12 is making his final descent. I've been up and down and up and down through various levels of Gehennom, transmuting potions into full healing to boost my HP, collecting junk that I may or may not tote out of the dungeon, but I think it's time to make a go of it. I have three amulets of life saving, and basically everything else I need (I suppose I could use up to two more scrolls of gold detection, but the planes of Fire and Water don't tend to require them). AC -52, HP 298, level 19. I've even tamed an Aleax, who adamantly refuses to wield Demonbane but otherwise kicks tail. I could probably do a little better, but this is ascendable, I think. Let's just hope for a few more wraith corpses as I tunnel out paths in the last few mazes.

Unfortunately I'm headed off on Spring Break tomorrow morning, so I probably won't be able to complete this until a week from Sunday...!

That character should definitely be able to ascend, my Knight had about 370 hp and AC -42 and had little trouble going up through the Planes, even when I accidentally zapped an Archon and was surrounded by nasties I was only brought down to about 300 hp. Didn't even need one amulet of life saving.

Scrolls of gold detection help on the Planes do they? That's nice to know, I spent forever trying to find the portals out of there.

Well, as it turns out, I just couldn't bear to wait. I pushed for the ascension, and got it. Primes. And I still have to get up in the morning and pack. ^_^``

Goodbye Mugh 12 the Demigoddess...

You went to your reward with 4098466 points

The detailed report of interesting things that happened (and there were a few), though, will have to wait a week. In the meantime, I've uploaded the text dump of the ascension with final stats and whatnot to some Web space for you all to ponder at.

I did not, however, beat brainfloss's score, so I guess this puts me in second place. Can't complain about that, though... one more notch on the belt, ha.

Heh, yes. Cursed gold detection will show up a pile of gold where the traps are (not useful on Plane of Fire); confused noncursed gold detection will reveal all traps as they are. Since magic portals count as traps, this is handy indeed. You can also use a crystal ball to reveal "^", but orbs are heavy--that's an option for Valkyries whose quest artifact's a ball, tho.

Started a SC trial run of my D2 character today (will most likely play a Hammerdin, minus the Vigor synergy as my character can't use defensive auras) - I am very glad that it wasn't the real thing, as I died in the Jail to a lightining-enchanted goat man... :cyclops:

On another note, I realised that Nethack is a walk in the park compared to some other rogue-alikes: games like Dungeon Crawl and ADOM, which I previously thought were a fair amount easier than nethack!
