Alice gets somewhere!
Alice the nth was doing really quite well, I thought, until she was drowned by an electric eel. D'Oh! :grrr:
But Alice the n+1th is doing even better. Got a wish early on (while dipping my longsword in a fountain to get Excalibur), and after some thought went for blessed rustproof +2 gauntlets of power, which I haven't regretted - when Tyr gave me Mjollnir, it was thumping time! Nice being able to kill those pesky electric eels and cockatrices from range...
She got down to level 22 and was telepathically aware of Medusa (does reflection work on her stony gaze? Blindness?), but doesn't have any (known) means of crossing water, so lets hope one of these sets of boots is water walking (any way to test this without actually walking on water?). Having run out of space there, I finally felt brave enough to try the quest.
Turns out I could have done this a lot earlier - it was an absolute walkover, and the only problem I had was wondering why Lord Surtur disappeared every time I hit him. Since the Norn had told me to trust in Tyr, I tried praying and was immediately crowned (if I'd known that would happen, I wouldn't have done it), but Lord Surtur kept disappearing. Eventually I worked out that he was teleporting back to the stairs to heal! Since Mjollnir's damage is mostly lightning, I guess the Orb of Fate's half physical damage didn't help him much?
It is nice that you can go back to the quest levels after finishing it, as they're really quite comfortable. Just fire ants and fire giants as monsters, neither of which are a challenge, and the fire giants are actually quite tasty (Mmm, extra strength. Now up to 18/65. Not that I really need it with the Gauntlets, but it's an achievement thing).
If I get another wish though, I'll be seriously tempted to get a blessed bag of holding - Sokoban had the ammy of reflection, and I now have just two regular sacks, so that I can have half my junk in each, and go up stairs by dropping one at the bottom, going up, dropping the other (NOT on the stairwell), down, pick up, up, and get the other. This is somewhat of a nuisance! Luckily yellow dragon scale mail isn't that heavy (why Yellow? 'cos I found a yellow dragon and a scroll of enchant armour!). Scrolls and potions can make up a surprising amount of weight!
I ended up using a scroll of enchant weapon and a potion of confusion to rustproof (and repair) Mjollnir after it got down to thoroughly rusty thoroughly corroded. It's a good thing that that didn't seem to affect its lightning damage!
And then I saved and went to bed.
