A monk is always tricky. Speed boots, possibly? either that or gauntlets of power, or maybe an amulet of lifesaving. or... a blessed figurine of an archon would give you a pet which should kick *** up to about gehennom. See the wishing spoiler at http://home.in.tum.de/~traykovs/nethack/wish.html

After reading a bunch of the spoilers from jiansonz's link, I did a much more remarkable job at NetHack. A big plus was that my first wand turned out to be a wand of wishing! So I first wished for 2 blessed scrolls of recharging, then a blessed +2 silver dragon scale mail, had to recharge the wand, and wished for a blessed greased fireproof +2 cloak of magic resistance. All came out as I asked except the dragon mail was +0. Pretty darn good for only being XPlvl2! I then happened on a bag of holding...finally found a scroll of identify--it was blessed and I got the 1/5 chance and all my stuff was ID (except for what was in my bag). Unfortunately lost the bag...disappeared, probably put an unID'd wand of cancellation in it or something. Went to minetown and bought 7 candles, and my pet promptly died from wand blasts reflecting off me to him. Went from mine town to Sokoban and solved it and got the amulet of reflection I didn't need. Grr! Really needed to replace my bag of holding (not to mention my wand of wishing, recharge scrolls and other goodies were in the bag!). Went from there to head for Mine's End and was killed by some blob's acid from hitting him twice before checking the text messages and my HP. 2 hits and 69 HP is gone! Some acid.

All in all my best run, now that I have a much better idea of what I'm doing. So, my best results:

Artemis the Nth, Dlvl 12, 61747 points
Max D2 lvl now = 30

An update for me on the D2 side:

Sarina, Lvl 19 Glass Cannon Mageazon, Dry Hills WP

Pretty easy going so far with lvl 7 Fire Arrow and Explosive Arrow. Been putting 2 points in Vitality every level up (don't want to miss any points there!) and skimping on Energy for now to build up my strength and dex. Will probably cap strength at 80 and dex around 120. Don't really need a super-powerful bow for my elemental bow skills. So I decided to base the stats on the elite version of the Hunter's Bow--the fastest speed I can get without spending 120 something strength for a Great Bow.

I'm really excited about my next ventures into Nethack. After studying the spoilers, I was surprised at how far my next character got. Right now my goal is to at least get to Gehennon to lift the level ban for my Amazon. Don't think I'll be in the high spots on the Nethack side, so I'll shoot for winning the Diablo side with my favorite character class.

After a few stupid deaths involving mind flayers, werewolves and other things, Karin the Knight is looking promising. She's got a warhorse, the near-obligatory Excalibur and a pair of speed boots too. I just need to play conservatively for a while now - and hopefully retrieve a 'bones' file somewhere along the way, as they had things like silver dragon scale mail and a Frost Brand in them.

She is currently character level 7 on the Gnome Shop level.

Archaelogist - Necromancer. Summoning and Curses only, but only one curse can be used, although points can be assigned to pre-requisites
*Barbarian - Barbarian. Combat skills and Masteries only. Must Dual-Wield whenever possible.
Cave/wo/man - Necromancer. Only one minion can be used, all curses and all poison and bone tree
Healer - Paladin. Cannot use Offensive Auras.
Knight - Paladin. Cannot use Defensive Auras.
Monk - Sorceress. Cannot use a weapon or shield - well, you can, but if you do, you cannot use spells to attack
Priest - Druid. Elemental tree only
Rogue - Assassin. Martial Arts and Shadow trees only, may only assign one point to BoS and Fade
*Ranger - Amazon. Bow and Passives tree only. Only one point may be assigned in each of the evasion skills, only 2 points of vitality may be assigned per level up
*Samurai - Assassin. No claws may be used
Tourist - Any class may be used
*Valkyrie - Amazon. Passive tree only
Wizard - Sorceress. Only two points of vitality may be assigned per level.

...

If anyone still needs clarification, please just ask.

Ooh, ooh! I'd like some clarification please! :-)

When I first read this, I read the Ranger/Valkyrie Amazon restrictions as ruling out the javelin/spear (and, for the Valkyrie, bow) skill tab(s). However, I started playing Valerie the Amazon, and so only now does a question occur to me: does that mean just the passives on that tab, or can you use inner sight, slow missiles, decoy and valkyrie as well? I already put a point in inner sight, but if I have done a bad thing I can restart (only level 11, so if one can use these skills then I'll put one in slow missiles Real Soon Now).

It seems to me that they fit the theme reasonably well - inner sight from eating a floating eye corpse, ascii animation tends to make missiles slow, rings of conflict can effectively decoy monsters (as can your pets), but I have to admit that I can't see how a Valkyrie would fit into the Nethack world ;->

But with the other skill trees ruled out, I'm getting a lot of points in those passives anyway! All the passive based blocking means that two handed melee weapons are quite practical, so Valerie is currently running around with a deadly two handed sword of worth (which Deckard wouldn't steal from Charsi for me. Bad dog! Maybe I need a tripe ration for him?). The Zon graphics make 2H swords look huge! Someone should warn that girl about running with scissors...

The passive tab means all passive skills. A level 20 valkyrie with 20 in decoy is an ally to be truely feared...

I just joined the list of players with unrestricted diablo II characters - Zirah the Traveller just killed the Master Thief and claimed his quest reward, the platinum yendorian express card. He's still got his dragon scale mail, and is current dual-wielding the blessed +3 frost brand and a blessed +6 silver sabre. I killed a titan in two turns, losing a grand total of 6 HP. Impressive...

I could do with a better armour class though - -16 isn't going to cut it for too long. -30 is more like what's required for the lower levels, and more like -50 is desirable (yes, it's achievable). I'm at the castle, but need to clean out the levels above me (I fell through the roof). There's a co-aligned altar at level 17, which'll do until I hit the valley of the dead, otherwise known as the last homely house. I've got my bag of holding, and a backup bag containing not less than 4 scrolls of remove curse and a great deal of holy water. My HP is also a worry - I have 128, whereas most ascentions list their HP between 300-600. Plenty of time...

Hiya,

even though I'm not playing in the tourney (not enough time) I started playing Nethack which has begun to take up a substantial part of my free (and not so free) time. I blame Durf for Flamearrows' sharing this game with us!

I really enjoy the game. I'm playing with a Valkyrie (yeah, it's easy, but I'm new to the game) and my best score so far is somwhere around 40,000. In my current game I just found Trollbane. I'll have a look at the appropriate spoiler next to decide whether I want to use it.

I do have a question to which I couldn't find the answer in any of the spoilers: Is there a way to find out the alignment of an altar that's not in a temple?

[edit]Oh, I just thought of another question: Is there anything I can do with all those statues in the Dungeons?

 hit ";" and move the recticle over the altar in question, and then press ";" again, minus the inverted commas in both cases. It'll tell you the alignment - bearing in mind, all altars except those devoted to Moloch can be converted (Although, converting a non-aligned altar in minetown is a terminally bad idea).

EDIT: The statues start to turn into real creatures as you go lower, the message will come up <Foo was pretending to be a statute!> and something will attack you. If you get the spell stone to flesh you can bring statues back to life - well, most statues. You can create statues yourself - wield a cockatrice corpse. Wear gloves. Levitate. Pray (not literally), 'cause if that cockatrice corpse touches you in any way, WHAM, instant death to you. Same goes for the monsters, which is why you're hitting them with it ;)

Cool, thanks, flamearrows! In one of my earlier incarnations I've encountered instant death at touching a cockatrice corpse already. This game is really addictive - and can be played under Win2000 without admin rights!

I know how I'll spend my 500km train trip coming up later today...

The side effects of leaving bones (YAFM)

So since inner sight, slow missiles, decoy and Valkyrie are not labelled passive skills, I shouldn't be using them? Should I restart then as I foolishly put a point into inner sight, or is that also against the rules?

You can smash them, with a pick-axe, spell of force bolt, or wand of striking. Sometimes they have spellbooks in them, or other treasures if it's a petrified creature rather than just a statue.

2 recent deaths to a Death Ray when I didn't have any gear giving reflection. First death was while I was on my way to my quest, killing centaurs when one shoots a death ray at me. And yet again in Mine's End from a Sargeant. Getting much closer....

So if we get our quest reward we are also unrestricted?

I also advanced my Mageazon to Act 3. Had to tank Duriel myself because near the end of my session all non-ranged monsters decided that my merc was invisible (including Duriel). I hate when that happens. Not much of a problem though. Handled it by quaffing potions with my back to the wall.

So, my updates:
Artemis-Ran-Elf-Fem-Cha, 91,250pts, Dlvl 16
Sarina, Lvl 24 Glass Cannon Mageazon, A3N - Kurast Docks (max lvl=40)

About the unrestriction of nethack characters... I'm surprised people have got as far as they have, but now the tournament is under way, I'll stick by my guns - If you pass the valley of the dead and go into Gehennom, then your diablo II character's level is unrestricted - likewise if you complete the quest and recieve your quest reward.

Mugh 12 has defeated the Chromatic Dragon, claiming the Scepter of Might and the Bell of Opening--thus blowing the top off my level cap, bwahahaha. (Not that Totus is going anywhere fast, really. When I play DII I've been working on my SPHCL Meteorb sorc. :P)

My luck this game has been pretty incredible, really. I'm kitted out with just about everything I need save for a means of reflection, before ever spending any wishes. I have a magic lamp, but it's far too useful for infinite light right now. Sacrifices got me the two best one-handed artifacts in the game, consecutively: Greyswandir and Frost Brand. I also got Demonbane later, but I don't care so much about that, ha.

That lack of reflection is pretty worrisome, though, and I still get my tail handed to me by dragons and minotaurs in melee. I only have around 130 HP and -23 AC; I had to gulp a full healing to beat the Chromatic Dragon, eep. My Castle wishes will probably go into magic markers... I'd try for wishless, but this is a tournament with some stiff competition, so it's only the ascension I'm after. *grin*

Biggest scares: black 'D's and purple 'h's. I have to count on stepping into firing range under Very Fast speed and tagging the black dragons with a wand of sleep, which is how I slayed my first and got disintegration resistance. I still don't want to lose my armor to a disint blast, though, so I'm really hoping something drops an amulet of reflection soon. Or perhaps I'll wish for it or a shield of reflection (Perseus didn't have one, and as I'm Lawful, I'm not about to go butchering angels in hopes of finding one); I've seen the Castle but needed to backtrack to find some way of getting through the gate. As for mind flayers, I am really really scared of them... my wand of death is out of charges, and they're sleep resistant. The last one I encountered went down to a slow barrage of elven arrows. Did I mention genocide is among the very few scrolls I haven't ID'ed yet?

Besides all that I'm golden, though. All the needed resistances, oilskin cloak (I forget if these count as magical), ring of free action, helm of brilliance, blessed unicorn horn, a goodly pile of potions of holy water, and more besides. I think my wish list consists of an oilskin sack and a something of reflection... maybe a wand of polymorph. Ooh, maybe I'll wish for an Aleax figurine and give Demonbane to it, mew. I do need a merc; these warhorses and large cats just keep dying at these dungeon levels. Might consider using a scroll of taming on a dragon somewhere, too, to fly around the dungeon on.

Anyway, onward and downward! For the Amulet!

Farewell, Zirah the Tourist. You died (sob) on the astral plane....

1 2478562 Zirah-Tou-Hum-Mal-Neu was poisoned on the Astral
Plane. Poisoned by Pestilence (with the Amulet). 181 [236]

Bloody hell I was close. The unicorn horn didn't work in time, and I forgot you can pray up there. Ouch. Oh well, 2.5 million is a pretty godly score, even given the fact it would have more than doubled had I ascended. Ah well, better luck to everyone else...
