Diablo II meets Nethack Tournament

There's a guidebook in nethack directory. much more understandable :)

Sorry for forgetting you lemon, and your monk Bomzas :( I'll definetly put you in the standings next time around. How's your nethacking been going?

Goobergrape - If you're playing, please choose a character class that sounds appealing so you can start playing immediately. Lemon is quite right - read the guidebook. All you really need to know to get started is the ';" key which is identify the square and #help. good luck!

Put me down for the Knight - but first, I need to know where the D2 version swticher is.

I doubt I'll get far; I've barely played hardcore before, and I am not too great at nethack either.

ahh forget those standings , flamearrows . And i had only few mins to play nethack (weaponless tourney) , so nothing new

Well that certainly was a lot more strange than I expected.

My Knight managed to make it to Level 12, and as low as dungeon level 28 (!) thanks to a trapdoor that dropped me 4 levels (from the dungeon into a maze), until he met his end due to an angry Minotaur, which took away 60-odd HP in one turn.

He got Excalibur through the sword dipping trick, and even managed to get a wish from a fountain (which I used to get a gray dragon scale mail). Didn't have much luck with anything else: couldn't even find a remove curse scroll to get rid of a -3 shiled, and couldn't find an aligned altar or even the entrance to the Dwarven Mines!

Points score: 153205

Whoa! What an effort, especially with a knight! You've certainly set the benchmark for this tournament. That is an extremely impressive score. I haven't even broken the 20k mark - but I suspect once a tourist gets going, he'll really get going.

I had only briefly read about NetHack before, but now I got really curious and surfed the net a bit for information about it (well OK, I surfed quite a lot, actually...).

It seems to be the most complex game ever written, hands down. I think I will try it out. The problem is, I fear that I might get even more addicted than what I am with D2...

And I have too many active tourney characters to be tempted to join in this one.

Thanks anyway for bringing it up, Flamearrows!

That is quite impressive brainfloss :worship: Nice work!

Not quite so well for me. Rachel the tourist made it to the bottom of the Gnomish Mines only to be killed by a Red Naga. Crap. This was my third attempt. #1 made it to level 5, #2 to level 6, and this, my best was to level13 with 17,534 points.

The mines are quite dangerous, even for a strong character, so I think I did ok for a wus  I had found Trollsbane, the unique morning star and got a little too confident for my own good.

I haven't started my Hammerdin yet, but will be allowed to go to clvl 32.5 - woohoo!

Well my effort was more a combination of freakish luck, both good and bad, and a severe case of 'just one more staircase down' disease.

And I don't really see what's so difficult about the Knight - he gets good armor at the start, can get a great weapon (Excalibur) easily, and gets speed at level 7, so he's quite good in the beginning. Just as long as you can mount your horse instead of nearly killing yourself in the process.

No problems. If your tournament characters start dying then feel free to join. Since no one has really moved their diablo II characters anywhere yet, this tournament will be open for quite awhile

I have terrible luck with tourists. Had another good one or two today, with a top score of 11,672 - died of a pack of winter wolfs while running back to shelter in the gnomish mines. I killed an incredible variety of monsters, and I'm a little surprised I didn't wind up with more points than I did, especially since I was xp 9. I had giantslayer, and found another vorpal blade but was using a plain dwarfish short sword, since I'd advanced to expert in it by that stage (#enchance).

Or playing monk is hard , or i can't do it right . I think both
But anyway i managed to get 13217 points . That's almost the same like earlier. Last time funny thing happened. I found boots, which i putted on. So i went killing everything was ok until i found stairs. I try go down and see:

You are floating high above stairs.

Oh.. ok these must be boots of levitation . Tried removing them , but i couldn't they were cursed. So i tried all scrolls i had , almost got myself killed, but didn't found scroll of remove curse . So i had to quit

P.s Does monk's damage increase within it's lvl and martial art's? Or i can put on some things that increase damage ? Thanks

flamearrows, due alone to the fact that i like your avatar, i shall join this tournament!!! yay!!! my D2 char will be an archaelogist, and i stilll have to download and start my nethack char

D2 char will be named necromancer... (im so creative)

Never give up! Never surrender! ^_^ You could have tried praying for help, or going upstairs until you found a sink (levitate over one sometime, you'll see what I mean...), or let a nymph or succubus/incubus remove the boots. At the very worst you could have floated your way out of the dungeon, going up from dungeon level 1, which would have improved your score.

Yes, yes, and yes. Leveling up and increasing your martial arts skill will help you do more bare-handed damage. Gauntlets of power, rings of increase damage, and kicking boots (for kicks, natch) can boost your attack power as well. If you're not wearing gloves, even wearing a silver ring when you punch a silver-hating creature like a werewolf or vampire will help. The DevTeam Thinks of Everything!

omg... i suck at this game so much its not even funny, my record is getting to lvl 3, and that was using a pickaxe to dig through the floor, i accidently attacked a guy trying to sell me stuff while trying to talk to him, and he backhanded me, although i did get a funny thing a few times :

you die...
die? [yn] (n) n
OK, so you don't die, you survived that attempt on your life

so i had loads of funning commiting suicide in my self dug pit over and over and over again :D

I'm in on this one...

My first char ( in nethack ), a wizard, ended his life on level 3... A boulder hit his head :(

Edit: And my second was kiled by a small mimic. Whatever that means :P level 3 this one also :P

You must have been playing in "explore mode". This is a good training mode allowing you to survive deaths - sort of like SC mode in D2 without having to go get your corpse - but you do continue to battle the guy who just killed you :D

Flamearrows, we should probably disallow "explore mode" for this tournament, other than to let folks new to nethack get in some practice.

I read the guidebook, and if i understood it good (i am bad at enlish) if you enable explore mode , you don't get your score, and it can't be turned off ?

I haven't looked at a guide or played explore mode for quite some time, but that sounds about right.

I'd like to join, as I feel like I am better at Nethack than Diablo (I have ascended at least twice) how long will this go on. I am busy for a couple days, but if this is more of a long term thing, I would like to go the priest/druid route. I've never actually played a Druid before, but I find a priest to be the best overall nethack character.
