I've probably messed up a few scores, but that's the way it goes... Um, can people start highlighting their actual scores and character positions somehow? I can see this turning into a pain in the neck.

Thanks for everyone who's joined! not to mention more than a few hardened nethack veterans.

As for me, I got a tourist with a cloak of displacement and gauntlets of power down to lvl 10 in the mines until a pack of soldier ants put paid to me. Those things probably kill the most promising characters of any monsters - and then cockatrices put paid to the mid-high level characters. And then there's liches...

Gabriel - You're quite welcome to join. However, I encourage you to pick a nethack class you're not too good at, to give us un-ascended newbies a chance

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Everyone is quite welcome to use explore mode (or wizard mode for that matter), as long as you realise that the score and depth of descent doesn't count.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

One more little hint for the underpowered nethack characters. Dwarfish Mattocks (or broad picks) such as can be found in the mines are easily the most powerful non-artifact weapons available. use one today!

EDIT: Clarification on explore mode added, and I changed the level of Totus, sabrecat

I read the guidebook, and if i understood it good (i am bad at enlish) if you enable explore mode , you don't get your score, and it can't be turned off ?
That's correct, and while that'd alleviate the problem of explore-mode players racking up insane scores, it's still problematic for the dungeon depth aspect of the tournament. So explore mode characters probably shouldn't count, still.

EDIT: Flamearrows, you missed that Totus is now Level 6. (Actually, he's 11, but by the updates in this thread he should be 6.)

Well, I thought since I had never played a druid it would even out, but I guess I will switch to monk/sorceress. I haven't ascended a monk, and I haven't taken a sorceress out of normal, so that should be fair.

I'm off to my law school moot court competition, but I thought I would update

Chung Tzu the monk has descended to level 10 so far
(unnamed) sorceress hasn't been started

(I have not entered this tournament, but I wanted you to see this anyway.)

Well, feel free to laugh at my very first NetHack effort...

Enter Kim the Dwarwen Archaelogist (I randomized everything, so I picked a name that would work with either gender.

Things were going really nice and dandy on the first floor. Found an altar and was really satisfied that it actually worked to use it to see the cursed/uncursed/blessed status of something.

A couple of random weak critters died (the dog was a great help here), I got a +1 Skull Cap from a Goblin, found some potions and I even learned a spell from a spellbook (Confuse Monster). And I levelled up! And I finally managed to figure out how to see which weapons I had proficiencies with.

Entered dungeon level 2. Smashed a chest to bits and made the terrible mistake of picking up a cursed stone that weighed a ton :bonk: , getting Kim "stressed" right away. I couldn´t find a way to continue, despite searching a lot in a very promising dead-end corridor. What to do? Well, I´m an archaelogist and those can dig, right? So I dug myself a nice pit, then dug through the bottom of the pit, going down to floor 3. The stairs to floor 4 was right there. I figured it would be good to map out where they were, in case I would end up on floor 4 accidently.

But the load was so heavy, I couldn´t get back up. I had to continue on the fourth floor. Crap! Kim was not ready for that. I got into battle with a Kobold Lord and a Bat. Things were going downhill and I decided to try out a wand I had (I knew it wasn´t cursed, at least) as a last resort. Turned out was a wand of Turn Undead (or something like that), and the next turn, the Kobold Lord killed me.

Total score: 301

(yeah, yeah, you can stop laughing now...)

Compare this with my very first D2 effort: a bowazon (mostly using Attack and some level 4 Multiple Shot) in Classic, who reached level 22 when she died her first death: to Duriel (who else?).

Three questions:
* Is there any way to see the weight of different items and how much you can carry without being Burdened?
* After Kim´s death, I could see some passive abilities she had (like Speed, etc). Is there any way to see those during the game?
* I have read some hints about how to guess the type of an unidentied wand by engraving some letters on the ground with it, and watch for effects. And the hints really stress (uses exclamation points, etc.) the importance of first engraving some letters in the dust with just the fingers, but they don´t tell why. What is the purpose of this "preceding" finger-engraving?

Actually, for a first nethack effort you did very, very well. A lot of nethack is luck - the amount of ways to die instantly is just horrifying. But I'll answer your questions

You'd have to look up spoilers for the weight of items. The rock you picked up is called a loadstone, and there's no way to get rid of it save for a prayer (your god can uncurse you under the right cirumstances) or a scroll of remove curse.

Quaffing from a fountain will occasionally tell you your abilities. Occasionally, quaffing from a fountain will summon a water demon or a water nymph too, so it's not a wise move unless you're a high-level character. A wand of enlightenment will, surprise surprise, enlighten you. Also, when you gain "intrinsics" the name for those abilities, you will get a message. For example, if you gain cold resistance you will see "you feel full of hot air" at the top of the screen.

I don't really know why the spoilers say to do that. I think there's consequences for engraving "Elbereth". hmm, I'll have to look that up for you.

Not directly, in most cases. However, a very nice test for loadstones is to kick them--a flint stone, luckstone, or touchstone will go flying across the room, but kicking a loadstone will go "Thump! Ouch!" (Well, it might move if you're really strong, like Gauntlets of Power strong, but still not as far as a lighter stone would.)

* After Kim´s death, I could see some passive abilities she had (like Speed, etc). Is there any way to see those during the game?
There are potions and wands of "enlightenment" that will reveal your current attributes. For many of them, you can also tell when you gain them, as a specific message is displayed; you can then take a note of it. For instance, if you get poison resistance (very useful!), you'll read "You feel healthy."

Some wands will not reveal anything unless there's already an inscription to act upon. Teleport moves the inscription somewhere else in the level; make invisible and cancellation wipe it out (the messages in all three cases are the same, but you'll narrow it down at least). Polymorph will turn it into a fortune-cookie message of some sort.

For my part, Mugh 12 is doing swimmingly, having looted Mugh 11's corpse. Now I just need to uncurse the armor... I was able to uncurse the bag of holding by zapping it with a wand of cancellation, but I don't want to do that with the armor as it'd lose its plusses. I'm currently going around dipping my +enchanted armors in fountains hoping for an uncurse. :P

Sabrecat has all the answers

My latest character, Tourist the Tourist is kicking *** and taking names. He's xp lvl 11, and has been down as far as level 13. Only a few close calls so far - a elvenking reading a cursed scroll of create monster and spawning a roomful of monsters right besides me was hairy, but I survived with some divine intervention. I solved Sokoban, and got my bag of holding. I looted a previous bones file, picked up gray dragon scale mail and later found a cursed +3 cloak of displacement. complaining? me? My AC is at -8, and I'm walking around with mjollnier. A very nice character, even if I died right now it'd be a major improvement on my top score :D

I had very fun time while playing my monk. However he's not dead, so n score today, but he have already cleared mines , and is on dlvl 8 now, killing things easily. I got very lucky and got healing spell on starting. I really like monks , because they can eat almost everything (cool) , have nice resistances at the start, blah bla blah everyone knows... :)

Now for the funny things , when i arrived to minetown for first time , decided to drink from sinks and fountains , hopping to get a wish. And i got. A water deamon. But i killed it , by healing myself each 3 hits . So i went to another sink, drinked and summoned about 6-7 water snakes. Not regular snakes . Tougher ones. Ouch. Fight with them went like that : flee, flee , hit , heal, flee ,flee, hit , hit, heal ,heal . So i killed them to. So i decided to give another try, and drinked from fountain. Guess what. Water elemental .... but he was dead to after 20 turns. Bad luck i think. but when i was back to town after killing gnome king , i saw baby dragon. hm.... attack or not ? attack of course. So i attacked , landed few easy hits , and it polymorfed into strange thing that was hitting me very hard, woooops. Then it polymorfed again , again , again , at breaks hitting me. I was hopping that he will polymorph at newt or something , because i think that when polymorphing you gain new attributes... right? but he was dead too, after running all around the town two times

1 31278 Bomzas-Mon-Hum-Mal-Law died in The Dungeons of Doom
on level 6 [max 11]. Killed by a leocrotta. - [71]

I think that i will go playing my d2 character which can now be leveled to 27.5

OK, so I've got this really good tourist. My AC is -15 now, and I'm one hit killing trolls. So I go back to the mines to determine the blessed/cursed status of some of the rings and scrolls I've been carrying around. I find that one of the scrolls is blessed, and I read it. A tower of flame erupts! And, naturally, the priest is standing right there. I might have killed him ordinarily, but he gated in a bunch of insects. I tried to dig out, and found that I couldn't because I was on the altar and couldn't move. All my teleport scrolls had burnt, and although I have 7 unIDed wands, zapping them one at a time on myself was bound not to work. Ah well, would you like to see your possessions?

at the time of death I was wearing gray dragon scale mail and a blessed +4 cloak of displacement. That character also left a bones file, so hopefully I'll be able to find my way down there again.

I only reached dungeon level 13 (I procrastinated a lot). Ah well

Chung Tzu died.

Darn invisible gargoyle. My monk was doing well, not great, but well. Dlvl 11 max, died in sokoban. Character at level 11. 44,622 pts. Oh well. On to number 2

Geez, I really, really suck at Nethack. After some 60 odd incarnations, still haven't progressed further than Dlvl 10 or scored higher points. My biggest problem is in tight areas. More often than not when I see the enemies, they're too close to start firing arrows at, and my daggers don't really hit too hard. Grr!

My last Artemis actually found a scroll of wishing, so I wished for Sting, got it and it helped a lot. But then I was killed *again* in Mine Town by a pack of fire ants! I don't think that town likes me. I also had screwed up in Sokoban...so no bonus for me.

Scroll of wishing? Either that's new to 3.4.3 or you got it some other way...

You can get sting by naming (N) an elven dagger. A wish is best spent on +3 gray dragon scale mail. The AC and magic resistance is useful for every class except a monk. Weapons can be obtained by sacrificing at an altar

Vildecor said:
How do you sacrifice at altars? I couldn't find a command for that!

#offer

Grab a corpse, and go to an altar, hit #offer. Flamearrow's tip of the day - for the love of all that is holy, don't sacrifice at the altar in minetown unless you are the alignment as the priest there ('You feel a peaceful feeling'). Priests > most characters.

Well, either I'm a lot better at this Nethack malarky than I remember being, or the latest patch is a lot easier than I remember.

Grodon the Knight is at clvl 17 now, he's reached into the upper depths of Gehennom, and he's dressed to kill with gauntlets of power, silver dragon scale mail, speed boots, a cursed saucepan on his head , an elven cloak and an amulet of what I think is life saving. He wields Excalibur and the long sword that was retrieved from the grave of a fallen knight - two weapon fighting just plain rules.

Got all the tools I need as well - unicorn horn, bag of holding (after the last one blew up after putting the wrong wand in, taking much gold, 4 enchant scrolls and more with it!), a towel (which for some reason is in my quiver!?!) and a stethoscope too...

Lol I died from food poisoning :( That's what I get for trying to save up rations :)

RIP Fugue the Barbarian with 215 points and more or less done with lvl 1.

This is cool. I wonder what my RPG-veteran roommate will think when he gets back from vacation. I'll wonder some more before joining your tournament.

Still learning the interface. Here comes Fugue1 the Barbarian!

hmm one of these random dead ends must be a trap door leading to the next lvl. how do I find one of these as a Barbarian? 's' yields nothing :(
