I'd use the two skills, it's not like you did anything against the rules. Secondly, there are no rules for Diablo II, so do whatever is most fun for you. On a different note, some people in this forum worry too much about being 100% legit. If he received two extra skill points, then so be it. I'm sure if someone received a million dollars from the government and knew it was a mistake, they wouldn't give it back. Especially if they knew the government didn't have a clue about who had the money. Again, nice luckiness skills on those two extra skill points and good luck to you. To the other people, chill out, two extra skill points won't make his character uber 1337z0r.

Ok, so this is a major hijack, but since Cinder got his bug figured out, I'm going to go ahead and do it anyway.

I'm kind of surprised this post didn't get much response. Seriously, none of the rest of you would give the money back? First of all, my conscience would never let me rest, and second of all, I would be worried they would find out it was me and I would either go to jail or have to pay the money back, so I would never be able to enjoy it. Haven't you ever seen that Family Guy episode? Keeping the money just makes bad stuff happen.

Remind me never to lose my wallet around you folks.

the american gov. is so ****ed up anyways that i would just keep the money, they deserve to lose it, at least it would go to some use, rather than something ******** like the useless war in iraq and blah blah blah

Fact of the matter is, when it comes to the hardpoint, no one would. We all end up hoping they wont find out. Personally i'm in such of a cash flow problem that even if i would find drug money, i'd jack it and hope for the best

nicely said. this "tainted" fad is really geting on my nerves. :grrr:

on the bug, this is certainly a rare bug. never heard of it before. even if my games crashes now and then, the skill and stat pts are always correct. maybe your D2 is a little light on the account parts  .

Mebbes you should read all the responses in the thread...Cinder's already admitted he can't add up properly, so it isn't a bug after all. :)

Heh

I do that sometimes, especially when I'm reading battle.net forums. Some of those threads get too long, don't want to read every little rebuttle someone thinks of. Good forum for laughing, because of all the arguing that goes on there.

I'm with you Lacerta. Some things are wrong even if they are "lucky". This is one of those things. Unfortunately, I think this attitude of "finders keepers" is becoming more and more prevalent (sp?). It's sad because, in my personal opinion, it exhibits a lack of basic ethics.

Just because you find something and "no-one will know" doesn't make it yours to keep. That's even more true if it is something of value. Some call it luck, I call it theft.

Im somewhat neutral on this. Personally i will go to any lenght to fix the issue at hand, but i dont mind if someone has the slight advantige "given" to them by the game. True, it might have been a glitch in the system, but the person behind the screen had nothing to do with it.

what if this happened to YOUR level 98 and there was nothing you could do about it?

A rather insane and unrealistic question, but what if?

I should make myself clear. I'm not talking about the game. I'm talking about the idea put forward by h0nkey that, if you had a million dollars accidentally handed to you, you would keep it.

There's a HUGE difference between getting a wierd break in a game and keeping a million dollars that's not yours. But several people seemed to agree with him and I (and Lacerta, it seems) found that disturbing.

I dont see any issues with keeping the million dollars. The government screws us over by such an extent that they nearly owe each and ever one of us that much.

The chances are they will find out, however. So i dont really see the problem with it. True, i supose it is much like theft. However, what have they been doing to us the entire time? Exactly, they have been robbing us of so much money and freedome, i say screw them. Get caught, thats your problem. Get away with it, way to go!

Whats a measly million bucks to them anyway, nothing.

Hmmm, maybe I'd use them on a totally useless skill like Increased Stamina or Teeth (presuming you don't gain any synergy bonuses).

The first thing I would do is to count all points again, just make sure they are bugged points.

If I really got 2 free points, I'd use them on something "out of build". like skills you would like to have more points, but one point is fine, and you don't normally have spare points to boost.

In this case, I'd boost a curse (amp damage or decrep).

This is actually an interesting thread.

I think he should keep the 2 points the government gave him. If the government is not going to handle their policies any better than they have, why can't the original author keep these 2 points? It is not like he stole them from the government, or that the government knows where they gave those 2 points too. It may only help your character a little bit, but 2 points is not going to break the government, and it isn't going to make a character that much better.

And about those getting off topic about the game giving away money, that is rediculous. The game has no way of giving money away so you don't need to give it back.

...what?

...oh.

...The government is money?

...The game is points?

...

...Never mind.

@tragor: You're thinking about it at a personal level. Like a wedding ring or something of that sort. If someone lost something that was of PERSONAL value, then yes, I'd probably try to find the owner, but if I was accidentially given a million dollars by someone I know won't miss it AND there is no way of them finding out, then I'll keep the money, that simple. I think Bill Gates will miss that million dollars, when on a bad day he can lose over a billion... Anyway, you misunderstood the situation that I was giving.

If the US government gave me $10mil by mistake, I'd say... hmm... that means I owe everyone in the US about a nickel... probably less. Here's what I'll do... I'll give a nickel to everyone who asks for one. Remember... the US government is the people. The politicians forgot that about 100 years back... but I'd not give a nickel of it back to the government.

If a bank or some buisiness gave me $20 by accident, I'd give it back in a heartbeat.

I remember this movie where this guy finds a crashed plane with a bunch of drug money in it, he decides to take it because the guys in the plane died and no one has noticed that it's gone missing. Eventually he goes a bit paranoid and at the end of it all his brother is dead, his wife hates him even more than before and he's still stuck in at his farm town job.

Moral of the story.

money=teh 3v1lz

And also happiness does not lie in material things or something like that  .

I think that both my conscience and my moral beliefs would plague me into giving back the money. True, the government may not be the greatest, but them being wrong doesn't give us an excuse to be. I mean, if it was an accidental gift to you, and you knew it was accidental, you would be deciding whether to steal the money, and not tell them, or give it back to em. Theft, plain and simple, and morally wrong. Or at least to me. Theres my 2 gold pieces, take it or leave it.

I'd keep the million, no question. Firstly, screw the government. Secondly, if they did find out what can they really do? They could ask for it back, but by then you would have spent most of it on cars, houses, bills etc etc and there would only be like 2 grand left and that's not even enough for a plane ticket back to Washington for the 10 governemt officials they sent out to get the cash. But they're smart, they've thought about this and realise that they will infact LOSE money by hassling you, so they just let it be.
