Bizarre Bug - Advice Needed

While leveling up with my fishymancer today, I noticed a very strange bug. I leveled up, and went to spend my skill point. I had 3 there. I was sure I had just spent all my points. I went to town, took off all my gear, added the skills up, then added the skills I should have (den, tyreal, book, etc). I had 2 extra. There is no doubt about it, this is not my mistake. I don't know how it happened. So my question is, what do I do? The only things I can think of are:

1) Play on, and accept the gift from the game.

2) Download a character editor and remove 2 skills.

For the record, I refuse to use a char editor under any circumstances, before seeing this. I also don't mind exploiting bugs like the poison dagger bug, or the marrowwalk bug. I only ask about this situation, because it is so strange. I want your advice. Is it better to play on, and accept the bug, or to use an editor to restore the game to it's normal form.

Thanks

eww... edit?!?! Are you kidding me?

I won't waste time doing the checklist (i.e. are you sure you didn't just finish the izzy quest? are you sure you're not hallucinating?). It's probably a hiccup.

I suggest you spend those point while you still can. Maybe the game will realize its mistake and withdraw those extra skill points.

essojay> I'm totally sure that it is a bug. for sure. seriously. really. actually. a bug.......... Really. :) And you'd better believe I spent the points asap.

Tenaka> yes, but it would also put me back 30 levels, and I'm not willing to do that.

Neato, strange bug I've never heard of. Just be sure not to pvp with this character because of the unfair advantage he has.

Never have heard of that before. What quest were you doing and in what difficulty?

Just to recheck (not questioning your mathematical skills :p), but can you post for us your character level, the quests done, and the current skill levels?

That's just weird. I doubt it's a bug, there is usually another explanation for these things.

Skill points = (character level - 1) + quests(per difficulty):
Den of Evil: 1
Radament: 1
Izual: 2

If you just killed Ancients, sometimes they give so much XP that they level you twice, or even three times.

Well, if it really is a bug, it does taint future trading and MP'ing with this character. Since you don't have recent backups, editing out those 2 points might be your only option. Of course, if you're going self-found, and always play SP, then keep them as a gift.

Never heard of this one. If it was a bug, wouldn't it happen to everyone?

Also, tainting the character because of this seems a bit extreme. As Summoned said, before we tar and feather the character I'd like to see the stats and the current game position. I guess I can understand why the PvP group would be worried but why the noise from traders? Why is this so different from hanging around and getting a couple of extra levels (and finding goodies along the way)?

If this was a bug, surely someone would have seen it before. No offence to Cinder but I think there has to be a math error somewhere.

@Cinder - Are you playing any kind of mod?

PS - I think in 1.10, the Ancients are limited to only giving one level up.

The exp given from Ancients in 1.10 got nerfed, they now only ever give you one level.

Gone are the days of rushing a lvl20 char to normal Ancients to get a quick 7 levels..

As for this "bug", are you totally sure that there's no possible way you could have miscalculated?

Very strange indeed. Im rather sceptical about this one, it could just be that you missed something. Count all your invested skills and quests completed. See what number you end up with.

However, i'm sure everyone knows that this game has its oddities from time to time. So i supose it could be possible.

I too think that considering this character as tainted is a little extreme, 2 extra skill points isnt really that much of an advantage. Personally, however, i would try to fix the problem at any cost. even if it means getting a dirty editor on my system to remove the fault. Editors and in general any kind of third party program is bad, not quite so if its used to correct a game error, however.

Good luck

Since I don't MP nor trade, I'd accept it as a gift from the D2 gods... as we all know they are fickle. Even so... this poses an interesting case. If after reviewing the character it turns out that the game actually did do it, I don't think that the character is tainted. After all, the game made a mistake, not Cinder.

Nice

I'd use the two skills, it's not like you did anything against the rules. Secondly, there are no rules for Diablo II, so do whatever is most fun for you. On a different note, some people in this forum worry too much about being 100% legit. If he received two extra skill points, then so be it. I'm sure if someone received a million dollars from the government and knew it was a mistake, they wouldn't give it back. Especially if they knew the government didn't have a clue about who had the money. Again, nice luckiness skills on those two extra skill points and good luck to you. To the other people, chill out, two extra skill points won't make his character uber 1337z0r.

Nicely said, i like your style

I agree, h0nkey, I mean, I agree with being legit, but I only consider a character cheating if they purposefully, knowing what would happened, either edited or somehow changed their character to gain a blatant advantage over other characters. I don't include the Marrowalk and such bugs as that, because I'm still not too sure its really a bug. Even if it is, I don't have qualms about it. But nice luck going for the 2 skill points, if you got them, actually. Post your level, and your skill points, along with which skill quests you've completed, then we can judge your math.

Character name : YAYFORDEAD
Character type : Necromancer
Character level : 63

Skill Points Rem: 0

70 skills used.

lvl 63 = 62 skill points

Normal Den, NM Den, Normal Book of skill, Nightmare BoS, Normal Izzy, Nightmare izzy = 8 skills

62+8=70

70 used = 70 earned

Cinder=idiot

case closed.. thanks all.. just so everyone knows, I talked to another person, and he agreed with me that it was a bug, so I'm not a moron all by myself. :) I'll leave him anonomous.

Hey, you were supposed to be saving your parents from the squid this weekend, not unlearning basic math! Made me laugh, though!

Hah, I think you're referring to me, as I was in the game with you when you first brought it up. I think we figured that you should have 42 skillpoints at level 39 and a manual count returned 44 skillpoints spent.

Eigenvalues, Fourier analysis, and linear algebra are a snap, but damn, that addition is hard.... :cheesy:

i actually had something like this happen to me on a 1.09 char on bnet, just saying.. it is possible, it was : i was lvl 83 novaorb sorc, and decided to do some cow runs in questing games, did a few, got to lvl 87, quit for the night... next day my char is only lvl 83, somehow it rolled my char back 4 lvls, but kept the skill and stat points placed, and all the stuff found during that time from cows on the char, meh i wasnt complaining :p
