Best dagger for a poison dagger necro?

Yeah, I did calculate the damage incorrectly, but the thought were correct.

As to what would happen if you had a weapon that had multiple poison sources:

Let's say you have a dagger with 3 Perfect Emeralds, and a poison dagger that did 5000 damage over 10 seconds (this is probably impossible, but the math is easier). You then have 300 point over 7 seconds, or 42.86 damage/second from your weapon. The PDagger skill is 500 damage/sec. Therefore the total rate of damage is 542.86 damage/second. The rates add up to 17 seconds, so now you have a total of 9228.6 damage over the course of the poisoning.

Now, just for fun, we can compare the same thing with a Blackbog's socketed with a PEmerald. The weapon has 488 damage over 10 seconds. The Emerald gives 100 damage over 7 seconds. This gives a rate of 63.09 damage/second. The duration is averaged, which comes to 8.5 seconds. Add in the PDagger exampled above, and you get 563.09 damage/second for 18.5 seconds, or 10,417 damage total.

If you go with a TAL Rune, your rate is 63.8 damage, but the duration is now 7.5 seconds. The total damage will be 9866.5 per strike.

Hope this helps!

Awesome, thanks again. i think i understand how it works now :)

I love rare builds... I'll have to work on finding a way to make Poison Dagger attacking as strong as possible, hopefully without needing insane gear.

Honestly, the best poison for my money is with the amazon. I have a plague javazon I'm currently taking through nightmare, and the damage with that thing is just excellent.

I think I once read that a tuned up Plague Jav is the strongest poison damage/frame attack possible.

Actually, I believe the durations do not add, it's the average. So the damage will be what you listed divided by two. The only exception is Venom, which lowers all poison durations down to 400 milliseconds.

I can tell you for about 90% certainty that PD poison duration is ADDED to the average duration of all of your poison sources.

1. average all poison sources except PD. (dmg/sec)
2. add those averages up.
3. average all poison source durations.
4. add the total item source average (the total from step 1) to the average poison damage per second of your PD.
5. then add the average duration of your items (the value from step 3) to the duration of PD.

After all the reading ive done here, i think thats how it works ;)

The durations of all poisons except PDagger average, then the PDagger duration is added on. The rates of poison are added together, then applied over the duration. This may also be true on Rabies, but I don't know.

Venom is an exception. All poison rates are added, as normal, but only applied for 0.4 seconds. So, all poison damage adds damage to venom.

Just to clarify this for me, does venom change poison's DPS? Simple example so I can do the numbers in my head: I have a 100 poison damage over 10 seconds charm and use a 1 second venom, would that charm do 100 damage in 1 second or 10 damage in 1 second?

10 damage in 10 second. The rate is the thing that adds, not the overall damage. I found that out in the Three-Way-Dance...

That's enlightening. :D I always thought Venom was the only one that differed from standard poison items.

So venom actually makes the charm do less damage over time?
Venom adds the damage rate, but lowers the duration down to 0.4 seconds. For example, the 100 poison over 10 seconds charm does 10 damage per second, or 4 damage per 0.4 seconds. So that charm will add 4 poison damage for you. :p
