Re: Age of Conan
I'll give you my overview:
Combat - The combat is pretty well done, both melee and spell casting.
The melee combat is based on directional swinging and AOE, (There are 3 base directions for everyone, and soldiers get a maximum of 5 as the game progresses): IE If you swing your blade from the right, anything that is within the arch of your blade gets struck by the blade. Also, everyone, regardless of whether they have a shield or not has guard directions (Monsters and players) You have 3 guards, as of now, left right top. You also have 3 blocks to commit to guard, you can either commit 1, 2, or 3 to a certain area. If there are 2-3 blocks in the area your opponent attacks from it does almost no damage.
Shielding: I do not know a ton about shielding, but it works like this I believe: you hit a button and go into active blocking mode, I however do not know a lot about it.
Combos: The main source of melee damage are combos. At first I was not impressed with melee and combos, it seemed clunky and difficult to use, however after having more experience with it I find it very fluid and skillful. As soon as you stop mashing buttons and begin timing attacks the game becomes amazingly fluid.
Spell Casting: From what I understand spell casting works like this:
You cast spells and what not normally, however you can enter a Spell Weaving state. This state allows you to control the power and effects of your spells, however can have negative consequences on you and your group if you screw up. It flows from level to level, I believe there are 6ish levels of spell weaving to which you control many aspects of it, such as how fast your power surges and what not as well.
PvP: The PvP is actually the part of the game that interested me the most. There is PvP every, you can attack the same people you can group with, however the main PvP interest is the keep sieging. There are PvP mini games akin to to World of Warcraft PvP, however that is just a side game.
Keep Sieges: Basically once your guild reaches a certain level/number of players you have the ability to build a keep assuming you have gathered the required resources.
In order to build a keep you have to have the required professions to build certain parts I believe.
Many guilds can create Keeps, and there are three levels of Keep. Once your keep achieves the the third level you can challenge one of the current guilds for a "battle keep spot". Third level keep comes from upgrading the keep.
As far as I know the battle keep spots are the only guild cities you are allowed to attack. These nine battle keeps per server have time zones that there open for attack that you choose.
btw, PvP also has collision, which adds another layer to the PvP strategy involved. This allows you to fortify keeps with lines and what not. From what i understand the Keeps function as cities as well.(not 100% sure on this though)
Overview: I think this game could be our PvP godsend. It allows for skillful PvP, as opposed to button smashing and allows thinking players to be rewarded.
I can give an overview of PvE if you would like as well.
