A thought on using +% damage to demons

I've just moved on to NM act II, fanatic/zealot paladin, after romping through andy in seconds, mainly because I found Aldur's Rhythm mace with its +200% damage to demons ( as well as high damage and very fast attack )

After killing Andy so fast, I got thinking about +% damage to demons and how useful it might be.

For example, Etheral Edge ( ethereal as well, for another 50% damage? ) unique ax, +200% from a base of 412-461 ( 600-700 if etheral, roughly ), then laying of hands, another +350%, chains, another +200%, seraphs amulet for another +50%, a bunch of Pul runes in the Axe for +75% each.

How high could this go?

All these items on a character with huge physical damage anyway could be ridiculous. I mean, if your base damage is say 8K ( not unreasonable at high levels on a high strength barbarian, probably would be much higher. )

I'm not sure how it would be calculated, but best case scenario

8k damage base, double for critical strike, 16K +1000% damage to demons = 160K damage.

if this calculation is correct, ( I've got a feeling it isn't so please correct me on this )

Hell Diablo goes down in a single hit, Hell Baal goes down in 3-4. Even the Ubers only have 650,000 HP or so, so in less than 20 hits, all 3 could be dead........

yes? no?

ED to demons is not calculated from your total current ED/damage

it is calculated like skill ED, which means much less of a bonus than you may think

nonetheless items such as laying of hands or chains of honor are great due to their secondary mod of demon ED

How is the calculation done?

I believe it's like:

If you have 300%ed and 200%ed to demons you do damage to demons as if you had 500%ed, not 200% applied to 300% (200+300 = 500, not 300*200 = 600)

well, if its like that, then my calculation is right, I just used 1000% because it was close, and easier to work with.

200%weapon+350%gloves+200%armour+50%amulet+(2x75%)runes = 950%

Doesn't it?

Ethereal Edge is always ethereal and it won't be doing 600-700.

Okay, so its 400 or so, it doesn't really make much difference.

To stop the numbers getting stupid, its probably worked out like this:

ALL % damage increases add, including from skills, then the highest damage would probably be a barbarian with leap attack, all levels 20, for the sake of argument.

The highest is gonna get, if worked out like this :

Leap attack + 670%
Axe mastery +123%
Lep synergy +200%
Might from Paladin1 +200%
Fanat from Paladin2 +373%
Concentration from Paladin3 +345%
Equipment bonus to demons +1000%

= +2911%

call it +3000%, +skills etc.

Base damage on the Axe is roughly 400, so 12000?

Is that right, because it seems low, given that he's got 3 auras on him and decent equipment!

That's because you're using a weapon with a not so great min/max dmg. Eth BotD 2h weapons can reach 1k maximum dmg, which is then multiplied by 31. Then it gets pretty damaging.

You're forgetting that you may have other sources of off-weapon enhanced damage, such as your strength. You'll probably have about 200, so add another 200% if you're using an Ethereal Edge and you should do about 3100% ED to demons.
Oh, and you'll only get 186% ED from Fanaticism, since you're an "other", and not the Paladin himself. He gets the 373%, not you.
