Steal away! I surely can't be the first to think of stacking that set up with Sol's....
No, the set is much praised for that option.
SSOG:s abbot guide, which is worth mentioning because it deals with PDR building in general, is one example. You should do fine with that set, I only found the armour with my only paladin guardian but even that was a great asset.
I think the zeal/charge combination has been called a Pulverizer at some time and place, by the way. Might be some thread about it even if it's not very common.
When is it most likely that you will die with a melee char? 20 small hits or 2 big hits?
Intriguing question. For me it would probably be the 20, or 10 for most of my characters, small hits. The reason is that those are more likely to come as a surprise and catch me off guard than the fewer and harder ones from more powerful monsters. I'll most likely die to a swarm of very fast hitters or a barrage of missiles of some kind, especially with a paladin who can if necessary smite most enemies into perpetual hit recovery if needed (looking at you, Hephasto and so on...) but lacks an easy way to handle many at once.
I've yet to die in hell - not looking forward to that - but in nightmare the most recent culprits I recall were careless neglecting of de Seis' pack and tomb viper clouds.
Mercs, even if they are not totally comparable, have fallen to many-hit infidel rushes, Act boss mismanagement on my part, Act bosses, ancients

, tainted packs, skeletal mage/archer packs and older things I don't recall.
I think roughly half of those are PDR situations and half are %DR situations, when it comes to what kind of gear would have been the best defense. Though above all, constant attention and vigilance of course.
