23 Runeword Search Thread

stats was, 20 faster hit recovery, +7 replenish, and all resist 15! oh wait that's just the runes! haha. ok ok, ShaelUmDol in a 3 Socket Crown failed. so who found one? i was just excited at the 1000 posts

ok ok my bad. there goes another Um rune. i'll try another one tomorrow if i find anything to trade, as i am not rich. wish i knew the rollback..

I am so glad I didn't see Andy's post until he had already admitted the joke. That would have been a big let down after two-and-a-half hours of excitement.

Good test, though. You guys had good ideas behind it. Maybe in a different type of item or with Tal after all.

Updated: wathombe's runeword spreadsheet

EDIT: One quick test:

Failed

hehe thank you wathombe~! i mean, after all this work, it seems all have lost their souls just searchin! no laughter or fun much left around hehe. good going blizzard =) anyways, amazing thing today. i met with this guy who trades pul runes for 40 pgems! cool thing cause i mf and find crappy things and sell for like 3-4 pgems each. so i only need to find 10 crappy things for a pul! i just got a pul with the 40 pgems, made an Um, and along the way found an Occy! (which is also worth an Um), so that's about 2 more trials of this! now i'll test out ShaelUmTal in a helm. and if this don't work, jebus! two ums blown in a day! *crosses fingers* gotta find a 3 socket helm. be back in a bit. hope this will be it

Edit: ShaelUmTal in a 3 Socket Great Helm is Gemmed Great Helm. son of a baal! lost about a Mal rune's worth today. damn you runewords! why you gotta be so fun to figure out

Edit2: ok i just traded my occy for the Um :cheesy: must.. not.. rest.. ahh... i'll try to test out both, ShaelUmDol and ShaelUmTal in a shield tomorrow. and if those don't work, then that's the end of my run because school starts Tuesday for me. during school time, i might not be able to play until the weekends =/ ahh well. sleep for now

Just thinking cryptically, but for Blood has anyone thought of using "Countess" as a basis for the rune word... she likes blood. I thought maybe CONTES or COUNTS (pronounse the S rather then making the phonic sound, like Steel, TirEl -> Tir E L = Tyrael)

This would mean:

Cham Ort/Ohm Nef Tal/Thul El/Eld/Eth Sur

or

Cham Ort/Ohm Um Nef Tal/Thul Sur

Since there is no choice for Sur then perhaps Ort is used rather then Ohm however Thul suits her more then Tal too. 6 Socket sword maybe?

I find the whole idea strange, but well, why not. However, you should note that Tal/Thul could also be Tir and Sur could be Sol or Shael...

i had this crazy dream last night that i was stuck in a haunted mansion a lot like how doom 3 looks tho, and then the big 3 headed dog was attacking me and some people, but this guy started dancing and sleeping and it fell asleep, then for some reason i was on mygrandfather's lawn putting runes into armor, *no joke* I was holding Fal and Mal in my hand and i put it into a 2 socket armor. after that I was trying to figure out the "blood" runeword and kept thinking I should try Ral Ort Um Gul Eth, for Rouge, the colour of blood, however in my dream i looked in a bag of runes i had and none of them were those, for some reason though i seemed to have a multitude of zods, then my dream quickly faded off into nothing. weird as all hell, especially as i haven't even played d2 in two weeks. i do have a Mal and a Fal on my account so i might get around to trying that, the cd's aren't here =( so i have to wait till next weekend to try, man i shouldn't eat stuffed peppers before bed anymore

I never thought a runeword-hunting thread could be that much fun ! The worse thing is, if that FalMal word into armor, or even RalOrtUmGulEth in some weapon, works, we'll have to send Mulder and Fox to investigate your case :spy:

By the way, I asked myself a question : what anagrams can we write with only the minor runes (up to #15) ? There are certainly very few of the new runewords that will use no medium or high rune at all (just look at the 1.10 ones... nothing below Um), but out of twenty-three, there's a slight chance one or two do. So, here's a list of the available letters :

A : Amn
D : Dol
E : El, Eld, Eth
H : Hel
N : Nef
R : Ral
T : Tir, Tal, Thul

Some low runes have been excluded because it is impossible to decide between the low rune and an "equivalent" high one : Ith because of Io/Ist, Ort because of Ohm and Sol/Shael because of Sur.

Interestingly enough, this list can be entirely exhausted to create the word ADHERENT (remember the Dusk Shroud from the Disciple set ?). Unfortunately, there are no eight-socket items... However, some words can still be tested within the standard socket limitations, and I urge anyone capable of it to do so, at least for the more promising ones :

ARDENT : expect some fire damage here. Perhaps a fire equivalent of Holy Thunder, considering the low runes used ? Besides, no rune repetitions here, so a very interesting candidate. Nef suggests a bow. There are nine combinations, but only DolEld and NefTir already exist as adjacent runes in some runewords (respectively Silence and Nadir), so AmnRalDolEldNefTir ?

ART : AmnRalThul... King's Grace anyone ?

DARE, TRADE, RAT, RATE, TAN, ANT, NET : doesn't sound very interesting to me

TREND : doesn't sound bad for an armor or headgear. But it must be a weapon since there are five runes...

DART : why not ? Into a bow, spear or sword most likely (too bad daggers can't have four sockets).

DDT : +1500% damage against giant mosquitos

Another Approach to Runewording

I have been trying to think of all the ways that the Blizzard programmers would program the runewords and how they would change them. If I were them, I would have a single list of runewords for all of the different types of games, and have a bit field to say whether the runeword was active for that type of game. Doing it like this is easier for the programmers, is easier to maintain, and is much less prone to error.

IF they do it this way, then some of the inactive runewords would have also changed on the non-ladder games. Has anyone checked the old inactive runewords in a non-ladder game to see if they still have the poison placeholder? If we find that some of those have changed in the non-ladder games, it is likely that we would be able to search for ladder runewords in non-ladder games. Of course, this would not work if they added completely new runewords instead of just activating and changing old inactive ones.

Somebody Else :
No, the ladder runewords are what they are (ie. ladder), and you can't find them out of ladder games. Blizzard has been clear on that. This probably means you can not find them in any of the files on your computer because they are implemented server-side.

Quick responses:

Andy: You are a martyr for the cause, sir. :worship: May good things come your way.

Farmer: I have had more than a few runeword-hunting dreams myself this past few months, but none that rich. Most excellent.

Apom: That's a great idea, and easy to test, as you say. Two things:
1) Keep in mind that the actual words will most likely be the same as the 1.07 list (i.e. Vengeance, Blood, Winter, et cetera), although the recipes will be different, as we have (almost) proven. We'd do best to look for synonyms or related words among the anagrams of "adherent."
2) I have an anagram program at the office that I downloaded for the Kenny-Z clues. I can run "adherent" through it on Tuesday and post every word in the English language that we can make from it.

PearlJam: Unfortunately, no. Shaft.ed was making ascii grids for armor and helms, but he has a heavy fall semester, so he has stopped updating those. I believe that Microsoft Works will also read Excel files, if you have that instead. Also, if anyone has Adobe Acrobat, I may be able to convert the file into a .pdf for download. Anyone?

Updated: wathombe's runeword spreadsheet

didnt know works reads these. does me no good cause i have no idea what im looking at.

edit: does this have 3 socket helms, cause i started playing on battle.net and i plan on testing those, if no one else is.

the Warcraft 3 theme

I was wondering about the second ladder theme once again. I know we've already covered most areas. But i thought that since the new warcraft 3 patch came out just recently and there's been new maps released since then for warcraft 3, and blizzard wants diablo 2 fans to take up WoW once it's released, it would make sense that they'd stick hints in new warcraft 3 maps or somewhere in the new patch release, although the patch release notes don't indicate anything hintish at all, i'm gonna go download some of the new maps and have a look for myself
