23 Runeword Search Thread

patterns eating away at you

I have concluded my in-game hints research. While some might say it was a waste of time. I think it was very useful. I've found zero patterns that would indicate any type of in-game hints however and this has put me back to square one in my search of the 23 runewords. I'll continue to post whatever attempts I make. I'll make sure to start posting pictures along with what I say I did because, . well it just seems more legitimate that way. Anyways, peace to you all

I admire the attempt and would love to help (Doom-Bringer8 on USEAST ladder) currently I am away in Florida visiting /w my grandfather, butt yhe post on Diabloii caught my attention

As the title says here is a thought. Has anyone confirmed from a blizz rep that the 23 new runewords are enabled. If they aren't then we are wasting our time, and subsequently eleminating possibilites that could be valid when activated.

Also the new runewords were server side seeing as how the runes.txt file is local I doubt that any of those runewords are new, however they are the only list we have but like I said, the content was pure server side.

My suggestion:

Make a small program that spits out EVERY possible rune combination (When I get home O could do this) and simply distribute lists. Using only the low end runes we should be able to knock about 20% of and hopefully stumble across any low level runewords, of course the first thing to do is to find out for sure YES OR NO is the new Runewords are in fact enabled

I wondered about this too. IIRC, last time new runewords came out, at least some of them weren't even on the list of names, let alone the same runes, and some that were on the list had different runes. As for trying random combinations, though, that is fairly difficult, as you have to try each possible combination in each different type of weapon/armor.

I have a feeling that the runewords wont go out in a patch until at least the majority of them have been discovered. Since I only play single player, I'm hoping (but not really expecting) that happens soon!

I am working on adding a page to my spreadsheet to track testing for the half-dozen words which were previously proven as coded but inactive. Here's are a few questions for you, though:

1) We have more recent formulae (from runes.txt files) for Storm and Starlight than the original formulae which once produced items with the placeholder mod. Have those two original formulae yielded the placeholder mod under any of the previous patches? If not, will we really learn anything if those formula now produce gemmed items? How do we account for the more recent formulae (both of which have been tested and neither of which work)?

2) Pattern is a somewhat similar situation. We have two different formulae for the word, but it is also spelled different ways, depending on the source (Patter or Pattern). Are these the same or different?

Yes, we've considered the possibility that the runewords aren't activated yet, but we've rejected it. :uhhuh: Maybe we're in denial, maybe not, but the ladder season 2 announcement seems to imply to us that the new words were to be activated during the server-side update which occurred at ladder reset. Also, we are aware that the new runewords are server-side only, but three of the most recent four new runewords came from the list we are using, so it stands to reason that some, if not all, of the 23 new runewords might come from this list, too.

Fusionpit, Thanks for testing Pattern for me. Also wasn't sure if my spreadsheet is too confusing, but Ice has been tested already, and its not supposed to work in staves. Wasn't sure if you were just curious or if I need to revamp the lists.

Wathombe, The Patter vs Pattern discrepency was just someones typo added along the way. A lot like when I had everyone saying Tradintion.
 
I am absolutely positively 100% sure that I made inactive Myth on Ladder 2.

I had a necessarily untwinked Palazon, which I have to say is hard to do with crappy gear (never thought I would be so desperate for certain items...I would have killed for Bloodfist). I tried Myth so she could have a helm if it worked. It didn't. Thankfully some kind soul donated me a Rockstopper a few days later. I didn't immediately post that I had tried it because she is my climber and has been as high as 5th on the zon ladder (8th now :( ), and 1/2 way through hell I made a Meteorb MFSorc to find her some gear. As such I was too busy to visit the forums much. It is quite probable that I tried it before Suo because it certainly did work. This at least tells us that the date they tinkered with it was no later than July 13 and further reduces the amount of combinations that should be retested.

I also wanted to just add a warning about Pattern: If Duress and Famine are anything to go by Pattern will not work with that recipe, not the least reason being that we in fact have 2 recipes for it. There is also another runeword, Patter (Tal Ort Tal Tir Eld).

The following three runewords were first seen in September 2001, screenshots exist for all of these, on this site, and two have since been released.

This version of Pattern, in Claws only, is cheaper to try than the other, all weapons, version (Dol Ort Eld Shael Thul) so it might be worth a shot.

Famine bares little resemblance to its final release with only cold damage and life steal shared (but both with higher values than listed here), not surprising when you realize that every rune has been changed (Fal Ohm Ort Jah).

This may or may not prove significant but Duress hasn't changed a whole lot, despite the fact of the rune order re-shuffle and Hel being substituted for Shael. It is my understanding that no matter the bonus mods a runeword will always have the mods provided by the runes. This is not the case with this early version of Duress. This version contains the Hel but there is no -% requirements. It does, however, list faster hit recovery among its mods which is provided by a Shael rune. In fact the two versions of Duress are almost identical in their mods - this old version lists 15% FHR, final version has 40% fhr...this version lists 10-25% ed, final is 10-20% ed...this one has 20% faster stamina drain, final version has 20% slower stamina drain. Aside from these three things they are identical. The released version of Duress is Shael Um Thul (Great for Palazons!)

Are the mods known for the alternate spelling of Pattern? Perhaps a meeting point can be found. Even better perhaps we can identify a rune (like Hel in Duress) that has no apparent reason for being there.

This is an interesting point. Maybe someoen could look through the 1.07 list and see if any of the runewords dont get some of there bonuses porvided by the runes. If they get other bonuses that can be provided by runes then we could test out the runes that would work for this. This could help us figure out what blizzard might change the runes to. also i ahve more helms to report tested:

Okay, this is not so bad. I checked back, and only eight runewords were tested before Suo tested Myth:

Last Wish
Envy
Victory
Thirst
Vengeance
Humility
Shadow of Doubt

We need to retest Thirst (aka Terror) anyway, as none of its various testers noted whether or not the item was gemmed (although had the test resulted in a unique name and placeholder mod, I'm guessing they would have mentioned it). I've marked all 8 as "NEEDS RETESTING" in the spreadsheet, and we'll double-check them just in case.

Otherwise the "Previous Inactive" page has been added to the spreadsheet now, so we can start tracking and brainstorming about those six possibles.

I recently got back from vacation and returned to the...world we all know as Battle.net. Upon seeing the post about 23 new rune words at the Arreat Summit, I was quite excited and determine to find out what they were. My search led me here, with apparently no results (though I did skip a few pages).
Anyway...since you guys are just spitballing, I thought I'd throw an idea out there. I seem to recall hearing somewhere that all of the rune names are D&D incantation words. I have no clue how truthful this is, but perhaps someone else has the knowledge to turn it into something real, and there's no telling how those sadistic programmers get their kicks. I have extremely limited resources, having just returned to Ladder, but will be on USEast softcore, most likely on the account LiquidFury. Feel free to drop me a message if you have any news, though I may reply rather harshly at seeing an unknown screenname.
 
That mule with the Io and Below runes, I'll take it and keep it active (don't want it to disapear) but my testing is rather sporodic (Because I am working on that forge rusher).

That's the challenge with doing Hell rushes. Plus, if we are trying to rush 7 at a time, one gets left out. Plus, if we only have one open slot, so if the first person joins doesn't need the quest...I'd say my way is easier. Besides! I always wanted to play a summoning necromancer

(I am sure that if we beat nightmare diablo, they can go to hell in Expansion. Just have each character create a hell game in orriginal.)

My necro is in nightmare, level 25/26, and climbing. Us.East by the way.

Had a little time this morning so I re-tested Thirst/Terror and also the Inactivated version of Storm. Both are gemmed:

I just read over the last couple pages again...If I understand correctly, we are almost completely sure that there is a runeword named "Myth" now active...problem is, we don't know if it retained previous rune combinations?

Am I confused, or does that help us some how?

Thanks much. Phaeax offered to take them, too, but I haven't been able to coordinate with him yet. Both of you want to hold them instead of test with them, though, so I'm thinking I might just start a character on east and test with them myself. Fortunately, it's easy to buy 2os armors and helms from Charsi, and probably shields and certain weapons, too. Unfortunately, I won't have much gold with a new character, unless someone on East can loan me a few thousand to get rolling :worship: (after that I'll have plenty from selling back the gemmed items).

Yes, we do assume that there is a runeword "Myth" now activated, because prior to ladder reset, that recipe still yielded an item with the runeword name and the +25% pr placeholder, and now it doesn't. The formula, however, has obviously been changed. We are hoping that it hasn't been changed much, like Beast (for which the original inactive version was ZodTirUmMalLum, not BerTirUmMalLum), but it could be wildly different. There's a new page in my ss (see above) to track these.

More generally, I wanted to discuss Storm and Starlight a bit. I'm not so sure that these two will fall into the same category as Myth and Dream, as there has been evidence of different recipes for them since the most recent patch during which they were proven as coded but inactive (with the +25% pr placeholder). For instance, for Storm, even if OrtTal comes up gemmed (thank you for testing that Shaft, btw), I don't know if that proves anything, since we have found subsequent a recipe for Storm (ElTirHelNefTir) in a runes.txt file. Does this seem right?
