23 Runeword Search Thread

OK for you poor folk out there, this is the HELM grid. Little confusing because of class specifics. This will be the key for grids I post:

* = regular helm
# = barb helm
^ = druid helm

Current HELM grid:

Shael-Io has been tested in a coronet. Didn't work.

edit: wooger if you're reading this you might want to update your site

Hello
The answer to Kenny-Z 10th question will be difficult to integrate in any existing theory (but it is a very cool idea; ascii horadrim symbol).

I thought about it:
Once I tried to get runes into some order I sorted them as three horizontal lines, something like a pyramid, a pentacle and something like a crossword puzzle with Runewords (each box got a rune).
I gave up pretty fast and it yielded no results, but maybe the previous answers could somehow applied to the ascii symbol

Okay this is far fetched, it is imho more likely that the trivia question got nothing to do with the new runewords.

This may not help much, because I am still half asleep and havn't thought it all the way through but...On Kennyz's importance of seven thing I just wanted to point out that rune #7 is Tal

Has anyone tested tal-ral-shael in a 3sk staff yet? I've been planning on doing it immediately as soon as i find a 3 sk staff but I strangely haven't been able to find one. ~psy

edit: how come I can't find Rounds 1-4?

Nothing new, but a combination

All:

Hey, it's me, WhiteHaven again. I haven't posted much on this thread, though I check it to read it just about every day (and most days more than once). Since I've started my new job, I've found it very difficult to find time after work and seeing my girlfriend to play Diablo 2, so this thread is kind of my only link to the D2 world just now. I did have a thought, though:

As Zackardo was beginning to say, I'm not so certain that all of our runewords will come from one way to search. Think of it this way: if we assume that there's more than one Blizzard programmer making runewords, then there may not be a connection between ALL of the new runewords, but groups of the runewords COULD be connected. I, for one, might make runewords based on characters from my favorite books (most notably HONOR Harrington (google it)) or from other aspects of life. Or, as we've been trying find, my brother (works for NASA) might make mathematically patterned runewords.

What I'm trying to say is, just because one clue doesn't seem to fit the rest of the clues (which seems to happen often in this thread), that may not invalidate the overall pattern that holds some of the clues together.

I'm sorry if this post sounds really stupid--it's late, and I didn't want to wait until tomorrow to post this. I may have forgotten by then. . .

Zack:

As for the 3.0/3.5 thing, I think that was entirely accidental. If you've been reading the original posts over there, the trivia questions are nominally a contest to see who can post the answer first. It didn't take long for the wiseacres on b.net to realize that they just needed to post a blank entry first, go look for the answer, then edit the correct reply in when they found it. Kenny caught on four posts into round 3, deleted the entire thread, and posted round 3.5 instead with a new rule: no editing. The original round 3 was up for all of five minutes, so we're lucky we got it (if, in fact, it is of any use at all).[/QUOTE]

Damnit I suggested it first! [I think.. ;s]

Anyway, if that's the case, then the likelihood of these being hints to the runewords seems minimal. If he's prepared to delete them because people are cheating at the -competition-, then I can't see that it is anything BUT a series of trivia questions.

I think that there would have to be some sort of pattern [or patterns, in the case of multiple rune-word creators] visible in the currently known runewords. As such, perhaps going through them and looking for consistencies [ie: Shael at #1] is something worth doing. I see that it has been done to some degree, but perhaps rune X, clvl Y and item-type Z all have something in common over several runewords [If you get my drift] - maybe there already IS a code unintentionally buried in there.

Maybe there is something in the developers. It's probably been brought up before [but hey, can't hurt to chuck ideas out there, right?] but maybe there is something in their names, jobs, etc [you see where I'm going, runewords based on a particular list that we haven't come across yet] or something along those lines that the runewords are created from. Has anyone tried googling a solid amount of the names, intials [eg: BotD], rune-initials etc to see what comes up?

Shrug, I'm pretty new to actually paying attention to the game - I played about a year ago and quit because I didn't get the bug, I think I've caught a mild dose now, so like I said in my previous post, I'll help out with whatever runes I get.

Couple more to take off the Armor list.

SolIth
OrtOrt

Psyadam, if you need you can get 3skt Staves from Drognan in act 2 (normal). Maybe not the most common sell, but they're definitely there.

I wouldn't completely discount the last trivia as a hint. Even if the diagram doesn't match up to any runes, the question might have clues. Hehe, its really bringing the discussion in a circle, but the placement of capitalized words is still odd

"I want to see The Symbol of the Order Horadrim"...... ex. Tal Sol Ohm Hel just the first one to come to mind. (for some reason i keep thinking shields even though i have nothing to back that up)

Anyway, i think Round 10 is still a possibility and shouldn't be tossed just cause its irregular

That whole "is invaded by WoW" thing might be a regular reference to the prize, which included a copy of WoW to the first 99 char (I bet the box has a full runeword listing in it though :uhhuh: )

A continuation

One final idea that should have been in my previous post:

The most definitive example of some runewords matching a pattern might be the ones that spell out words related to their names, like Famine (FOOD/FOOJ). According to my thoughts, the reason that not ALL runewords fit this pattern is because only one programmer did his this way. To me, this could make sense.

One quick rune test this morning:

RalNef
in a normal helm

No dice.

Haven't had a chance to cull through the WoW stuff yet. Will soon.

@WhiteHaven - you have a point, but one thing I was thinking about makes that uncertain as well.

If there were a mathematical formula to generate these runewords, the recipies would have been created first, the name of the runeword coming second. That implies that not all of the runewords were anagrams, but a few were. So the programmers then could've looked at them, and named the runewords based loosely around what the runes spell.

Another thing I found interesting - this list of runewords (found off the 1.07 mpq) was obviously generated a long time before the actual game was playable - either that or the two teams had some bad communication, seeing as there's items like 3 socket knives, 3 socket necro wands, etc etc thrown into the mix. I'm not quite sure what that means, but we may be running on very very old information.

I havent read the entire thread but it seems like this is a nice idea and I think that I have a small idea. In the worlds of the "Lord of the Ring" the town of Minnas Tirith. Tir Ith. I dont know if this has been posted before and this is my first post so please dont flame me too bad but I thought it was worth a mention.

Norse runes

Didn't get me anywhere, but was worth a look. For those interested in Norse runes, I found a list with illustrations here:The Norse Runes.

There is a whole bunch of links to other rune systems here.

And today's armor test is.....

IoOrt

I'm Level 70 now and I'm starting Hell. The problem is I'm definitely not ready for Countess runs yet. My fire resistance is only -6% or so and we all know the Countess is Fire Enchanted....my poison resistance is 80% though, so go figure. :p

Can someone hook me up with a link to the "Lets play a game 10" Kenny-Z thread? I can't seem to find it. ~psy

edit: just tried tal-ral-shael in a 3sk staff. Doesn't work.
edit: I would like to start contributing to the armor and helm grids. Is there a link to the latest?

Very disturbing, though. Kenny removed the sticky to round 10 and did not replace it with a round 11. Further, he announced the winner at the end of round 10 instead of at the beginning of the next round, as he had been doing. And finally, his post looked like this:

evil_gundam was this rounds winner.

Thank you for playing!
...as if the questions are over. Either this is some sort of key to finding all the runewords (i.e., each question is not a runeword in and of itself, but together they all point to the solution), or the quizzes have all been a giant red herring.

Great! Thanks for anything you can test!

Here's my latest spreadsheet: http://home.comcast.net/~wathombe/diablo2/wathombes_runeword_database.xls
Look for the "Armor" and "Helm" tabs on the bottom. My grids only go up to Io.

Why only up to Io? I am willing to use higher runes than that. You guys tell me which runewords you suspect might be good and I'll see what I can do as long as the runes aren't too expensive.
