23 Runeword Search Thread

You know - I was wondering - has anybody determined what new ladder world event(s) there are? I haven't seen anything posted about any, nor have I encountered anything.
My assumption is that Blizzard doesn't want to just release the rune words - they want them to be found. That means that either (1) clues exist somewhere either in game or out of game (2) the 1.07 list has something on there to go by (3) the rune words are combinations of runes that people would want to have in items w/o the word so they could be found that way or (4) I'm completely off and blanket testing is probably the only way to find the runes. Personally I lean towards #1 - but I'm just not sure. I also think that there will be some character-specific rune words - probably for lower levels kind of like leaf. For those of us who actually play the game - leaf can carry even a cold build sorc very far.
Also - the whole 'World of Warcraft' and D2 worlds collide idea - is there a possibility there could be hints somewhere in the WoW websites / info?
Oh, and I am questing in hell. Being my first time soloing - especially a sorc, I'm not really keying on testing words - but I'm getting some decent rune drops so one of these days I should be able to fill in more of our grid.

Random thoughts...

Has anyone attempted to speak with Hratli, Geglash, Drognan or anyone in the Pandemonium Fortress to see if they have anything to say? Perhaps the runeword isn't in the answer, but the answer may be yet another clue.

The number 7. It was mentioned that there are 7 tombs of Tal Rasha. Has anyone tried to right click on the Horodric Scroll yet from act 2? I realize most people don't even pick it up, but maybe they put a clue on it for ladder.

"Uileloscadh Mór" - If you read that backward, I can see Sol and El. One could argue for O(h)m as well.

Sorry if these are duplications. Didn't have time to go through all of the pages. I'm just now getting active in these clues.

(This is Kasira, I can't be bothered to log him out.)

I've talked to the people mentioned, no dice. Their gossip is just about the other people in town. The other people talk about....more other people.

Also....

http://www.wordsmith.org/anagram/anagram.cgi?anagram=Pandemonium+Fortress
http://www.wordsmith.org/anagram/anagram.cgi?anagram=Hratli+Geglash+Drognan

Anagrams. That's the only thing I can think of that we haven't tried.

hehe - that last post was my wife, Kasira.

Dansls1 - new world events, are you sure there's new ones going? Because if there were, I'm sure they would lead to clues for discovering new runewords - did the new ladder information say there would be a new event? That would be cool.

Terrorwind - one thing I've noticed is that the Horadric scroll doesn't drop for me anymore.....weird.

Do you already have the cube when you're killing Radament/opening the chest? Usually it doesn't drop in NM/Hell or if you're levelling a mule that already has a cube.

As far as anagrams, I played with the Uileloscadh Mór clue, and it spells out 5 complete runes:

Cham
Sur
Dol
El
Io

There are a lot of possible combinations, and I wouldn't do trial and error with Cham & Sur...

Talas, welcome to the group and thanks for the contribution. Also thanks to everyone else adding to the lists/ideas on the thread. And thanks especially to Blue Streak with his big cojones burning Ums and Lums on random rune gemming.

In regards to the World Event, I think it is simply there promotion of the "race" to lvl 99:

"When Worlds Collide!
Blizzard is proud to present our Diablo II – Ladder Season 2 World Event

This Ladder Season, the Realm of Diablo is invaded by the World of Warcraft! Who wins? Our top players do! The race is on to be the very first player on each Diablo II Expansion Realm to reach level 99; regardless of character class.

The first player to do so on each Expansion Realm will receive yadda yadda yadda"

Another thing I just realized, and its so stupid I'm sure someone has already noted it by now, is that there might be a grouping to Kenny's answers. For example maybe all the NPC's go together to form a single runeword: Hratli, Drognan, Geglash = Hel Dol Gul.
This doesnt hold up to well for the monsters however as we had Baboon Demon, and Blunderbore = Ber (dol) Ber.
Anyway just a thought.

Also as Wathombe suggested at the begining of this two socket epic, we should progress to the next items as lower runes are filled in. I know for me I'm getting a stash full of El-Nef's that all I can really do with them is cube up to Eth's, Ith's for a single attempt, especially at the rate we are covering. I believe two socket helms were next. So IF you are a poor man (like myself) and have a plethora of runes you could not ever possibly use for armors, instead of tossing them in the trash, toss them into a helm. We'll keep both grids up and running. Be sure to list what type of helm you test in, as class specifics are critical for this item type. Helm grid will be posted this afternoon, for now check Wathombe's spreadsheet to see what's been tested.

Finally, there is no new news on the 1.07 lists as the "other" forum has degenerated into a few posts of very likely phony runewords and people requesting screen shots. Will update 1.07 list when applicable.

OK for you poor folk out there, this is the HELM grid. Little confusing because of class specifics. This will be the key for grids I post:

Okay, Kenny-Z just posted round 10, and I think we can toss acronym and anagram theories out the window (unless Shaft's theory of grouped answers works):

MetalDemoness was our winner last round!

Next challenge:

I want to see The Symbol of the Order Horadrim in ASCII art.

A very important thing you guys are missing is that this new ladder's THEME is "When World's Collide".

You need to be thinking WC and not D2.

If there are any elven words from the WC world in the WC game books, and I know there is rune art in them, these would be the places to look for new clues.

I would try WC3 character names like: Gul Dan DOES ANYONE SEE THE GUL IN HIS NAME??? Gul Dol Amn Nef. He was an orc caster so maybe in a 4 socket stave.

Doomhammer: Dol Ohm Ohm Mal in a 4 socket hammer.

Here's a piece of history from the Warcraft world;

"-2,700 (-2,117): Due to the humans' reckless use of magic, agents of the Burning Legion find their way back into the world. The Order of Tirisfal is founded."

The order of what? Tir Is Fal= Tir Ist Fal TOO CLOSE TO NOT BE WORTH TRYING! They were probably magic users so a 3 socket stave seems to be the right idea for that word.

The orc leader Thrall= Thul+Ral I'd Go with axes for that one, very easy one to try too!

Falstad a dwarf= Fal+? Fals? Fals + A "D"= Fal+fal+dol 3 socket axe or mace class weapon would be my guess.

Kalimdor= Ko + Lem(Lum?) + Dol Probably in armor, helm, shield.

Mok'Nathal (beast master race)= mal+ko+thul (i know it's a stretch just flow with it) Probably in an axe as the BM uses it, or in a druid helm.

Kul Tiras= Ko+Tir+Tir Tiras=Tirs

Teldrassil, the world tree, Tir+eld+ral+sol Probably 4 socket stave

There are just too many near misses when looking at the WC world. If you guys finish the 2x2 armor grid, and finish going through the old rune word lists, then I would start looking at WC3 information.

Things like this seem TOO OBVIOUS to not try. I know the runes are high level, but as everyone has pointed out, most of the new rune words have incorporated higher runes in them. Now that Ko+Ko+Mal is possible, it looks like multiple runes will be included again.

I think the clues are obvious enough; look beyond the D2 world, look at when World's Collide. Powerman 5000 comes to mind. The song might be worth looking at. But I'm sure the key lies in the Warcraft world.

If I could find my WC manuals I would more easliy be able to offer some suggestions, does anyone have a link to any of them?

Oh, sorry about posting again so soon and not just editing but this idea is totally different than the one above; the cyrillic alphabet has 33 letters...there are 33 runes. I am researching this more in depth but I wish I had someone else who could help me out. Anyone with exp in Cyrillic could please PM me maybe? Ty.

Good try, but I think this is a bit of a stretch. The characters don't match up too well, and I don't think Blizzard would hire a language expert to design their rune system. Pretty creative idea though. Problem is we have too many "L's" and they have too many Y's. There are also two characters that are used more for grammatical purposes

Great idea on the WC angle, Cmdr. Makes even more sense when you realize that Bliz could use the D2 runeword hunt to drive customers to WC.

I'll have to do some reading. Unfortunately, though, I never played anything more than the beta of the original WC (I'm a TBS guy, not an RTS guy). I'm probably not the one best suited to research this...

EDIT:
More thoughts:

Here's the full text of the Season 2 announcement (I know it's been posted before, but I'm reposting for posterity's sake to make a few points):

Season 2 Begins

Season 2 begins with a new race to the top of the Ladder! Blizzard hits you with more goodness as we release 23 new Ladder-Only Runewords for the 1.10 patch! We'll continue to track the top players throughout the Season and post the final rankings at the end on Battle.net. Be sure to check back here throughout Season 2 for further updates!

When Worlds Collide!

Blizzard is proud to present our Diablo II – Ladder Season 2 World Event

This Ladder Season, the Realm of Diablo is invaded by the World of Warcraft! Who wins? Our top players do! The race is on to be the very first player on each Diablo II Expansion Realm to reach level 99; regardless of character class.

...

The phrase, "the Realm of Diablo is invaded by the World of Warcraft" is very interesting. No evidence of this in terms of any new D-Clone-like world event, so perhaps it is the runewords.

However:

1) the new runewords are mentioned in an entirely different paragraph; and

2) what are Kenny-Z's trivia questions, a complete red herring?

I do like the WC idea, if for absolutly no other reason than that it has to be a lot easier for Blizzard to play name games with runewords in a game that they're in the middle of developing while they're enabling runewords. And on that note, Blizzard posted a story to the entire WC universe, i think maybe at around the same time that the Rune search began? I'd imagine that would be a good place to look for Warcraft-ish Runewords.

For the trivia questions:
1) The questions 3 and 3.5 could mean something as simple as having to mix the clues from 3 and 3.5 together. Like, maybe an anagram using letters from both answers, or having the runes from clue 3 and the runes from 3.5 be part of the same runeword.

2) Do the clues have to be in the same place? Maybe there could be some from Kenny-Z and some from WC.

I think this part really underscores how we much it will help to get at least one runeword by working the grid. We've had a lot of theories, and every one will help us figure out what to try in terms of larger words. But we need something to help sort through these - ex. to find out what Kenny-Z is up to, or to confirm/deny WC.

Well, I spent half an hour browsing the World of Warcraft website (because the news item did say we were being invaded by "World of Warcraft," not just Warcraft), but did not find anything immediately.

Zack's post, however, sent me back to the news archive on b.net, and sure enough, Bliz posted a 33-page summarized history of the Warcraft universe a scant eight days after ladder reset. Here's the link:

http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/story/chapter1.shtml

Sounds like some lengthy and perhaps dry reading, but I'll plow into it as time permits this afternoon/evening. If anybody wants to lend an extra pair of eyes, the more the merrier,

Zack:

As for the 3.0/3.5 thing, I think that was entirely accidental. If you've been reading the original posts over there, the trivia questions are nominally a contest to see who can post the answer first. It didn't take long for the wiseacres on b.net to realize that they just needed to post a blank entry first, go look for the answer, then edit the correct reply in when they found it. Kenny caught on four posts into round 3, deleted the entire thread, and posted round 3.5 instead with a new rule: no editing. The original round 3 was up for all of five minutes, so we're lucky we got it (if, in fact, it is of any use at all).

Two more armor permutations today. (If you've been noticing that I've been calling them permutations instead of combinations, it's because mathematically speaking, they aren't combinations. The order matters in permutations, but not in combinations).

SolRal
DolRal

These came from chests on Durance Level 2.
