Tournament: Envious of the Green and Gold

Nice amulet there, Dezrok. I am yet to find any of those.
No matter what the rules say, I think we should be able to use these, regardless of amulet colour.
I'm assuming you mean "jewel" ;) and yes I agree. It is an S/U after all!

Envy has Deeded on level 1 of the Catacombs to a Rat Man. Okay, so it at least wasn't a regular Rat Man but a Conviction CE/LE Boss whose death nova caught a lazy Envy way too close to the action. To be honest I hadn't noticed the CE, so was just making sure to keep out of the way of the lightning bolts.

Before then Envy had been going pretty well but always felt a little fragile. I'd spent some of his saved stat points on dex and vit to give 60% block and 700 life. Skill points were going into Poison Dagger, which made the Poison Nova combined with Lower Resist quite effective except against Zombies and Poison Imm skellies. Not hanging around waiting for merc kills also made the game more enjoyable.

Good S/U drops throughout Act 1 with that final part giving:
eth Rockfleece (Black Marsh); Arctic Binding (The Hole); Heamosu's Adamant (The Pit); Sparkling Mail (Tower 2); Bladebone and Beserker Hatchet (the double Double Axe S/U drop from consecutive packs in the Barraks); Snakecord (Jail 1); and Rogue's Bow and Angleic Halo (Jail 3). Of all those Angelic Halo was the only one to be equipped, replacing a Cathan's Seal.

Nice tourney, thanks for the company and good luck with it everyone.

What? Noooo!!! CE/LE are the worst, esp. with Conviction...That's very unfortunate! I was so looking forward to you Guardian thread :(

Well, rest in peace, Envy!

As for me, Meronym is awaiting the fight against the Ancients (NM). We'll se how that goes. And I have to remember to disable the CoS hotkey...

R.I.P. Envy. Sounds like he found the worst possible 'dirt bomb' to be around. I can imagine that Conviction + LE makes focusing on anything but dancing between bolts hard. Those guys don't have much life either - otherwise you would probably have had the time to notice the CE, either by reading it or because the merc + golem got chilled by the hits.

Progress for Eric has been quite a bit faster with a Might merc and the new green Bill.

Eric has had his first share of PI monsters now, and he does not like them one bit. Well, I suppose non-bosses are OK because they can be locked in place and just worked down with Open Wounds. I used Goreshovel for this in the Tower Cellars. Ctc Static on merc's armor sometimes sped up the process quite a bit.

In my Tristram session, I left a zombie boss in Stony Field and took it last with the help of a temporary companion. (I had no Open Wounds with me this session other than Ripsaw, and I had missed that a Zweihander has so high requirements, so I was glad that I could find another solution)

Three Ghost bosses in tower Cellars and one of them was a real piece of work that had me going to town over 20 times to heal us.

I had also left a Stone Skin LE Extra Strong Brute (PI + CI) boss down in Hole level 2 for last (the Tower Cellar session). I just could not defeat it with my current setup. I even tried a bit without merc, just constantly resummoning the HoW and Poison Creeper, hoping that either poison or OW should be applied at all times. I had good periods here (Poison Creeper can be distracting for enemies) but it was often very dangerous for Eric with only 25% lightning resist. And those Brutes become so fast when they are near death! But my good periods gave me some hope that a little added fire/lightning damage from a Skystrike-wielding merc should be able to do the trick, and it did. Yay!

I have now muled in Blacktongue for next session. Prevent Monster Heal can make this sort of fight much less stressful since you do not have to constantly apply poison/OW.

Eric has found his first elite unique: Bloodmoon Elegant Blade. Looks like a good Act V merc weapon. It actually does more damage (one-handed!) than Hwanin's Justice and has fat life steal, but the superior speed and the added Might with the Bill setup probably makes that better. I may actually add the stats needed to wield Bloodmoon, mostly for the Blood Golem charges. First I need to read up on how much life it's going to have, though. May not be worth it, I dunno.

One more S/U item found today - Howltusk.

Since I knew I wanted to go back to Nightmare for a new Might merc, I ran through Tamoe Highlands and in and grabbed the waypoint in the monastery before saving.

Zutalors is ready to enter the palace
* I did a lot of power shopping when I arrived at Lut Gholein. I bought a +2 Concentration scepter and a 3 socket Spetum. I put my Emerald in the Spetum, hired a Combat (Prayer) merc and I was ready to go fighting
* I changed my left mouse button to Smite and found occasionally useful. Against Hollow Ones, it was really nice because I would run past the skeletons and stun the Hollow One until the merc came over and killed it. In general, play was very easy
* Drognan eventually had a +3 Concentration scepter in stock, so that took my Concentration skill to 4
* At level 23, I started gambling Chain Gloves. I thought about gambling Bardiches and Voulges, but as I am happy with my weapons I didn't really want a S/U weapon and given how boring gambling is, I wanted to maximize my odds of getting something useful with each gamble
* In the Far Oasis, a Berserker's Headgear fell. Drat! My merc had a Full Helm with one Flawed Topaz and I had a Helm with two Chipped Topazes in it. I guess the merc's Full Helm will go into the stash until I get another Flawed Topaz. I have no plans to gamble for other parts of the Berserkers set
* At level 24, I got Holy Shield and Conversion. With Holy Shield, my Smite does almost as much damage as my weapon. I would love to try out Conversion, but its chance of success is so low (7%) that my merc kills enemies faster than I can land a successful Conversion hit
* I found a Skill Shrine, so I played with Conversion. When I had a bow equiped, the symbol for Conversion on my left mouse stayed red. When I had a thrown weapon equipped and I clicked for Conversion, I walked over and swung at the enemy. So Conversion appears to be a melee-only skill
* I had asked earlier if my merc poisons an enemy and it dies later, do I get the merc's MF. Reading and thinking on it, I think not. From Arreat Summit, "When a Hireling gets a kill, it uses the combined Magic Find of the Hireling and you." So I switched my merc from a Spetum socketed with Emeralds to a plain Spetum

Meronym made Conqueror. Baal dropped Skull Splitter and Telling of Beads...the latter I will keep in stash, e.g. against Andariel, but for now I rather use Nokozan relic for the fire resistance and the 20% FHR (reaching 5 frames BP).

I drew Gloams and Mummies and Beetles on WSK Level 2, the throne of Destruction had Oblivion Knights/Mages, Succubi and Vampire Lords. All in all it went well.

I split the group of Minions of Destruction with Mind Blast and fought them one after the other, sometimes 2 at a time, which was possible without risking my or my merc's life.

A few interesting finds on the way:

Wish I was a Paladin.
3 pieces of Hwanin's (The Bill is missing). I used the Helm quite some time, till this green winged helm dropped in the Cow Level  Craaaaazyyy!

The Cow King himself dropped Blood Crescent, which might be worth upgrading...either for me or my merc. Hmm..have to run some damage calculations, I guess.

I'm undecided on my spare skill points: I've got 6 of them. Ideas are:
- Switch from BoS to Fade and pump it for damage reduction (and resists of course)
- Pump Shadow Warrior as an additional tank for Hell (currently level 1...)
- max. Claws of Thunder (currently level 14, Fists of Fire is 20)
- put 3 or 6 points in Death Sentry for additional charges...thing is, I used it only twice in NM...

What do you guys think?

Welp, one of the best items I could ask for just dropped in NM catacombs 3:

I think your merc MF will count for kills from merc poison. My understanding is that a poison kill counts as a kill for whoever inflicts the poison. The lack of warnings against putting poison on a merc would seem to support this.

Grisu and Daz - Amazing drops!

What do you guys think?

I think you need the CoT synergy the most. With my PS characters, I max that one before the fire synergy (because the Meteors kill well in Hell even with just 10-15 FoF points because you can stack them). You need to hit fire immune monsters more times since you can't lead them to pre-laid fire patches, so I prefer the lightning attack to be the strongest.

Fade - I think it depends on how good resists you can get in Hell without it. If you need it, a couple of points are good.

More points in DS does not increase the number of times it hits (that's what Fire Blast does) but a decent explosion radius is of course nice. You will find yourself using this skill a lot in Hell. For one, it's a lot of power on low players setting, plus just think how much safer you can handle Fallen villages if you can just drag away the warriors out of sight of the shamans and then blow up most corpses. It's the same with skeletons in Act II later.

Shadow Warrior can indeed be a nice tank (especially against elemental damage if you get her to cast Fade) but you need a dedicated investment through most of Hell for that. Otherwise she will have trouble surviving through the 6 seconds casting delay against the enemeies in the fights you need her the most.

You could say that Envy has been avenged, because Eric has killed a Rat Man bossback and another boss that was Conviction + LE (and FE!). I was very careful not to get anywhere near this boss. About half a dozen merc resurrections and a full dozen of rejuves (for the merc) were used. It was close to being much easier (it looked like we had this boss) but then an annoying Ghoul decided to interfere and the fight became much harder and costly.

I fought Andariel with three different setups. First I tanked with a Crushing Blow setup (Rattlecage, in combo with the fast Goreshovel) and kept resurrecting the merc about 10 times. Several rejuves were spent (as I have written before, red potions don't do much for this character if he fights something really damaging), so I decided to take things slower and keep the distance to Andariel more. I left the merc dead for a while and went into bow mode, using my two summons to distract Andariel and running to keep the distance. For the last bit I hired Debi the fire archer, gave her Rattlecage and Skystrike and took Hwanin's Refuge for myself, for the poison resist.

I have played Sewers as well and there, I had to deal with some brutal archer packs (had to string some of them out by luring from afar and/or use corners to kill some of the minions before taking on the bosses. There were also two Stone Skin (PI) mummies. One was LE and caused many merc resurrections.

Finds:
* Vidala's Barb (Catacombs boss)
* Infernal Torch, Arcanna's Flesh (Andariel)
* Vidala's Fetlock (Radament) and there was a Lum rune in the Horadric Scroll chest.

Infernal Torch completed my fourth set. Apart from the Cranium (that I am still wearing) it's next to useless for Eric.

I did some more research and found this thread which says:
The continuing effects (FW, poison, etc.) now have a pointer back to the player (or minion/hireling) that inflicted the damage. This is needed to know who (or party) to award the experience to. I have tested Gold Find with poison and Thunderstorm and it works just fine with both. So by extension the MF should work just as well.

I've been lazy about updating my progress, sorry about that! For whatever reason, my screenshots aren't working anymore, so no screenshots this time around :(

Priscilla has reached Lut Gholein! Act 1 went pretty smooth outside of one *very* NDE with Pitspawn Fouldog. We were caught in poor position, and he spawned multi-shot/extra strong/cursed. With zero lightning resist outside of Fade, taking all three bolts at once put Priscialla around 10 hp. Not good.

I tried taking screenshots of all the S/U drops, but none of them got saved. I finished act 1 this past Friday, and at this point all I remember is Skin of the Vipermagi, a fantastic find. Andariel went down without a fuss. Fade with an antidote potion made her pretty painless. She herself dropped nothing of interest.

Yikes, talk about close!

BTW, that description of Fouldog's abilities can't be true. He is always CE + Cursed, with one more extra ability in NM. Must have been Multishot in your case because it's so obvious. Was your cold resist any good in this fight?

Congrats on the Skin of the Vipermagi.

Congrats on the Skin of the Vipermagi.

You're correct, it was CE instead of ES, which is why I had trouble with position - good catch. My cold resist is maxed, but I don't have CBF, which made this fight particularly scary.

On another note, I bought Morrowind this weekend, so my progress is definitely going to slow down. I didn't think I'd like Morrowind, but I absolutely love it so far.

The areas following the Sewers were unremarkable, even though Halls of the Dead was a bit tricky, as usual. Just a controlled sweep with no interesting finds.

I had run into Far Oasis and grabbed the waypoint, then I went back to Normal so I could hire the best possible Act 1 merc. I had anticipated PI Itchies in the oasis (hence my merc switch) but was instead met by raptors, vultures and beetles. Crap, progress was so slow. I even felt the need to hammer on those beetles myself, even though it hurt. I soon decided to switch back to a desert guard, but for this session I had to make do with the types offerered here in Hell (when I begin clearing an area, I do the whole thing). Decided on a Blessed Aim merc. Not having Might had a bigger effect on his damage output than I thought. It also had a notable effect on his leech and therefore his survival.

There were no swarms in the first Maggot Lair level either so I kept the BA merc there. Was nice to have somebody to hide behind against terrors like this.
Black Locusts on second floor, so back to Act I and bring an archer. Thankfully, there were no beetles here, and my archer buddy could actually kill maggots as long as I hit them with PMH first (Blacktongue). No swarms on level 3, and now I tried a Prayer merc instead. Went OK. Coldworm was Cursed and that usually means there is no escape being Amped by her 'poison aura' but strangely enough, we were never hit by it.

OK, back to the regular Might merc the next session. Ah, much better. Eric does not fight much (for MF reasons) but when needed, he surely can pack a punch. I can just imagine the numbers I'd get with one of the top-notch elite uniques...
(Also: guess why I have saved exactly this amount of stat points!)

There were greater mummies in Claw Viper Temple, plus regular mummies, so I used my corpse eating vines a lot there. Lowest number of snakes I have ever seen there. Some Claw Vipers here and there, but no boss pack of them (just two Champs). Near the end, I decided to kill off my vine so it would not attract the attention of Fangskin's pack too soon. Vines can't be Unsummoned but it is very easy to kill my vine: 1. summon Poison Creeper. 2. Fight just about anything and do not use Shock Wave...

Down on level 2, I ran my usual round-the-corner to the right (from the character's view, to the left from my view). Just a few regular snakes here that I could keep stunned. One of Fangskin's minions came in and bounced back. To prevent my merc from chasing after it, I portalled out in the lower left corner. Got back, put up a new TP, killed a couple of regular monsters. Fangy's pack came in from the up-right. Now it was just a matter of timing (and a little Shock Waving) until I could make use of the knowledge I gained in Nightmare. CE, that's a bit "ouch!", but not as bad as my -7% resist would suggest. Raven Frost's 20% absorb means I really have something equivalent to 33% resist. Had to recast the HoW a few times, though. Those bolts were hard on it.

Finds this session: Arcanna's Deathwand and Bonesnap. I upgraded Bonesnap and invested STR (req. 124) so I can equip it. It will probably be my main weapon in act boss fights. The fire resist is especially nice against the last two act bosses.

Palace should not be so bad (but archers can be tricky) but then I need to decide what to do about AS and then against Apparitions in the tombs. I have thought about Holy Freeze merc. Even though HF won't slow them, we should still be able to kill them faster than if I only use Goreshovel's OW or Skystrike's lightning damage.

Awesome progress Jian!

Can you give a quick rundown about how you select mercs? I could definitely see changing mercs around being helpful based on weapon choice. Right now all I really have is upgraded Dimoak's, but something else may come up.

That actually reminds me! I did find a Witherstring in my last session. I doubt it'll much if any use, but hey it's another S/U :)

thunder maul! :D

You going to gamble one? It would be insane if you found cranium basher somewhere. OR maybe you already have the unique great maul or something and I forgot

or upped Gavel of Pain ... can't remember if you've already found this or not? The amp on either would solve your issues with PIs.
I remember you have a Steeldriver lying around already but the ?50% requirements means that stat points don't add up and it wouldn't help with PIs either.

and thanks for avenging Envy.

Zutalors is now in Kurast
* Now that I know that I will get the merc's MF on poision kills, I switched back to the Spetum socketed with two Emeralds. I added a jewel with 6% MF
* In the Palace Celler Level 2, I got my first S/U weapon - Leadcrow. I put it on the switch
* The Summoner was in the third arm in the Arcane Sanctuary. I ignored the fourth armor and dashed through the Canyon to the true tomb. I wanted to fight Duriel before I got another S/U weapon as each additional S/U weapon severely drop my DPS
* In the true tomb, I got an Berserker's Headgear. There goes another big hunk of MF
* I found the orifice fairly quickly. I had 2 unused skill points and I wasn't certain how to place them. I put one in Vengenace and that took my damage from 44 to 100 up to 47 to 104. Not too worthwhile. I put the other into Conversion as it had a much bigger effect
* The fight with Duriel was pretty easy. Because I had max block, I tanked him. I kept my character screen open and whenever the Thawing potions wore off, I ran through the TP. I think I went back to town twice before I killed him. He dropped all yellows except for an Ith rune
* I cleared out the rest of the true tomb and then sailed to Kurast. My plan is to push ahead while I have my best DPS and then once I have 3 S/U weapons, go back and clear out the Canyon of the Magi and the six false tombs

Major score! Just found this :)

Priscilla is level 55 now, just about done with the maggot lair as you can see. I'll probably post a more substantial update Monday :)
