Final Fantasy Forum Mafia Game Thread

Hmm, I think it is a *little* interesting how CG died. The story doesn't sound like someone killed him, but that he did something to get himself killed? I don't know if we would get any info under that scenario either.

Mod question: Does the death story reflect anything about the in-game mechanics of their demise, is the story pure story with no connection, or is it none of our business? :p

---
It sounds like you are backing down from the assertion that a Zokar lynch would give insight into BA, Pyro and I. Is that correct?
I think it could give some insight into BA (and Bipolar became awful quiet after you and others took over going after BA), but yeah, you and Pyro not quite as much. I'm going to make a big job mechanic speculation post in a bit, and after some thinking and the nightly cooldown period, I'm not quite as Gung-ho about Zokar. I'm still *really* curious how strong the WIFOM is with that one, but I'm going to take some time and think about things some more. I think the Squire *would* be the vanilla job, but that *would* also be a pretty easy guess for someone who knows FFT.

I disagree with BA being either legit or defending a scum-buddy. If BA is scum, I think it's more likely he was "defending" someone he knows isn't anti-town. In this case, scum-BA would be going after someone with a quasi-legit sounding reason but that reason only holds up because BA knows the player being questioned isn't scum.
Hmm, sounds "legit". :p
I will take this into consideration.

This right here is the one post of the game so far.

"he's either legit or defending a scum-buddy"

awfully quick to that conclusion. If none of them are right, one must be scum? Trying to set up a double lynch much?
I guess that was worded a bit strongly. Primarily what I meant was that either he was trying to make a legitimate argument or was defending a scum-buddy. I guess that's a distinction without much difference though. I try to follow my gut in these games, at least early on, and that's what it was telling me.

As to your questions, I don't quite follow. Please elaborate.

"Now, with your fixation on peoples' familiarity with the game's theme (which sounds like targeting data of some sort to me)"

lol, "targetting data".
Why the lol? He kept asking people about how familiar they are with the theme and has some super secret purpose behind it he doesn't want to share. Why didn't he just say "I was curious" or "just wanted to know if they needed more explaining"? To me it sounds like he's evaluating who he can more or less easily deceive (target), who he should target with some ability, or at best who may be the most proficient at making up stuff based on game knowledge. I'd hope it was the latter, but if it was, I don't think that would be a secret.

What do you think it is?

So if you were scum, everyone not on your team is automatically town? Even if I was scum, how would I know that Zokar wasn't a SK? Or in a second group? Or Neutral?

You misunderstand me. I'm not talking about "in general" or "scum usually do" blah blah blah. I was referring specifically to you. If you are scum, I think you are more likely to defend a townie than defend a scum-mate on D1. The salient point being: if you are scum, I don't automatically assume Zokar is also scum. That was said by Techno in our conversation.

Player A says Im vanilla, kill me

Player B says seriously?

Explain to me how that is not role fishing, even slightly so on a Day 1 with no night when we are dissecting everything and explain to me how having issue with that is me defending player A.

I have a somewhat different take on the events. I wrote out an answer to the question I said I wouldn't yet answer in game. Here is PART of that answer. It involves Zokar's claim and BPC's question.

When I saw Zokar's claim, my first thought: and your job is....? Lacking a job claim, I consider Zokar's claim to consist of character name only. All else is unimportant or obvious. I'm unsure if Zokar was intentionally or naively obtuse. Notice I did not ask Zokar about FF knowledge. I consider such a question unimportant/useless because, if Zokar is savvy enough to fake a VT claim in this manner, is also savvy enough to lie or downplay FF knowledge.

Imagine we are in a lore heavy game like X-Men. Someone makes a claim he has ability ____ but does not give a character name (didn't some mafioso do this? /wave CG). Someone else comes along and asks if that claim was a serious claim. I see nothing wrong with the question because the claim is missing an extremely important piece. To me, it's not rolefishing; it's scumhunting. The goal is to ascertain truth from lie. To determine friend or foe.

The weak link, obviously, is the assumption that BPC asked because of that or similar reason. Rather than ask him straight up, I asked the indirect question of FF lore knowledge. The theory being, someone proficient in FF is more likely to notice the job omission. They could also be scum with someone familiar with FF, but I think the rules rule out mafia communication at that instant.

But I digress. By the end of the day, BPC made some posts indicating he was onto the job thingy. I have no problem believing someone onto the job thingy would be leery of Zokar's claim. I was (both). Thefore, I have no problem with the question and don't see it as rolefishing.

LONG POST:

Well, overnight I started putting together a jobs list for my own reference and to give a leg up to those of you who are unfamiliar with the theme. I used FFTactics as the base and looked around at other games to see what may meaningfully add to the list, and disregarded odd jobs, overlaps, and close...-laps? FFTactics has 20 jobs (and a whole slew of named characters) and other games add more, so I figure unless everyone has a unique job, there may be some duplicates and many of these jobs may not even be in the game. I don't know if there are named characters in the game or not, but given the flavor of us all being students and it being based on the job system, I kind of have my doubts. Also, I'd think names *would* be indicative of alignment. I'll include a few notables though for completeness and comic relief!

These are just my ideas and some of my projections based on what I may have done if this were my game. :p

-----------------------------------------------

Physical classes:
- Squire: Basic warrior, makes sense as a Vanilla Townie.
- Archer: Ranged attack, sniper, Charge(build up power for stronger hit). Decent candidate for a daykill or delayed kill attack.
- Knight: Powerful and tough, could be hard to take down, could be bodyguard, and/or may have debuff abilities(various Break skills).
- Thief: Pretty versatile, investigator, recruiter (Steal Heart), vigi, etc. lots of possiblities, hard to narrow down.
- Monk: Martial artist and one word: Hamedo!! This will attack anyone who attacks him in melee. If this was my game, thats what I would do.
- Geomancer: They make the ground magically rise up and attack enemies then whack them with a sword? No real clue what they may do in game.
- Lancer: Tough and can Jump on oppenent's head from across the field, but takes a little while to land. Pretty much same possiblities as Archer, but tougher.
- Samurai: Strong attacker with some magic abilities from swords. Hard to say.
- Ninja: Vigi if there ever was one, Day Kill, investigations, stealth.
- Dancer: Does mystical dances to debuff enemies. Could interfere with others.

Magical classes:
- Chemist: Alchemist/Scientist, could use potions on others or create them for others. Heal, buff, or maybe even bring back to life (Pheonix Down)
- White Mage: Healer, Doctor, could possibly raise the dead.
- Black Mage: Weapon of Mass Destruction #1! Lots of attack magic, very dangerous, but squishy.
- Time Mage: Could block a target's actions (Stop), enable ally action (Quick), or other things in between.
- Oracle: Paralyze or negatively effect an opponent (Chicken! Oh wait, that's Beowulf!).
- Summoner: Weapon of Mass Destruction #2! Has powers that target enemies or allies, but I would suspect very dangerous.
- Mediator: Talks enemies and allies into altered states (good or bad) and recruits enemies. If there is a recruiter in this game, here it is.
- Calculator: Random wackiness with numbers!! Not sure how it could be used in game.
- Bard: Sings songs to buff up allies. Could super charge other's abilities.

Neutral:
- Mime: Copy another's action. Pretty straightforward.

Named Characters (ones that seemed potentially useful / different):
- Agrias: As Knight but more dangerous (Crush Punch = instant death)
- Orlandu: = Win.
- Beowulf: Turn you into a chicken! For realz!! (basically an Uber-Oracle with a sword)
- Mustadio: Engineer/Scientist

From other games:
- Blue Mage: Gain use of abilities used against them (assuming they survive the exposure)
- Red Mage: Jack of all trades, warrior + white/black magic.
- Templar: Against mages, It's Super Effective!!
- Illusionist: Does low-medium damage to all enemies. Not sure how that would apply here.
- Assassin/Sniper: Natural Vigi, day kill.

Well, if your eyes aren't bleeding yet, I hope this is useful, especially to those of you with little knowledge of the game.

And since Goryani is apparently keeping score, I'd put my knowledge of the theme at 10.

Nice write up Techno. It was mentioned earlier, then discarded (by cdm), that the job names won't have anything to do with alignment (black mage =/= mafia). It hasn't been modconfiremd in the actual game thread, to my knowledge/tmk (?). I can confirm that one of these jobs is correct.

Thanks, Technomancer! If this stuff is right then it could help down the road.

I was looking through the FF Wiki and found this:
Ever since Final Fantasy V, the endings of the Final Fantasy titles have become famous for repeatedly involving fake deaths of playable or supporting characters, which occur either in the ending sequence or right before the final battle, and are reverted either by the time the credits roll or in the post-credits cutscene.

Do you guys think we need to pay attention to that fake death motif as a possible game dynamic? I recognize that there's little that can be done before some revival were to happen and affirm my suspicion but I think it's interesting that it seems there is at least the possibility that people won't stay dead.

You might enjoy the full answer I wrote in my QT. Then again, maybe not. Before the game started, I'd rate my FF knowledge as 2-3. I've played the original FF on NES but that's it. Ribbons so powah!

Hmm, I hadn't considered that, but I don't really see a "fake death" thing being present. It is possible that a job or two could revive the dead, but that's just pure speculation at this point. The last game I was in had reviving and I hated it almost as much as I hate cults. That game a cult too. A town cult. O_o

BTW, FFTactics *does* carry on the fake death motif at the end.

Oh, I am very curious! That's definitely something I'll be looking at later. :)

OT: I recently re-completed my copy of FF1! I was missing the Items/Spells/Cave Maps poster, and I have no idea where it could have gone! It's apparently been missing since I was a teenager, but I got one in good shape off of Ebay LAST WEEK, and now it is complete!! *squee*

So many references I don't understand!
If you have any questions, I'll try to answer them.
