Tournament: Envious of the Green and Gold

Good to see there are still new people joining! I haven't forgotten my Phoenix Striker, but I simply neither found the time nor the mind to play D2 in the last few weeks...(months???) Right now, the game doesn't seem as rewarding and fun as it used to, but that will change again...I don't know when, but when it does, I'll pick up Meronym again :-)

In the meantime: Have fun with this tourney everyone and keep on posting your updates!
 
Next time someone updates the table, kindly remove me. I'm going to use that character/build for something else.
 
I decided to enter again -- I enjoyed this tournament, and I have the itch to work through with another character. I chose a druid this time and named him "Winston." One of the things I enjoyed about my previous character was the way the build was oriented around the gear that dropped, and I intend to do the same this time. I started him off as a fire druid, but that will adjust to the equipment that falls.

Winston just finished Normal. He is at lvl41, enjoying the company of his Act 1 Rogue mercenary (wielding Raven Claw). The only noteworthy gear currently equipped is Tarnhelm, but Sigon's shield is not bad, either.

Normal is usually uninteresting, and this was no exception. I look forward to Nightmare, since I expect that much of his particular shape will come together over the course of the next five acts.
 
Decided to take a little break from my Random Assassin (underpowered characters in Hell are painful, especially when you've done a full clear to that point.)

Genie the Amazon defeated Normal Andariel, and got two greens for her trouble - Isenhart's Lightbrand and Cleglaw's Pincers. Cleglaw's goes well with my Cleglaw's Claw, giving me some nice resists and AR. These are my first S/U's in a while. Now going to get the Cube before I do the Sewers; I've decided to play without an extended stash for a challenge, and my stash right now is full of rejuv's waiting to be cubed.

And then I deeded her. Semi-intentionally. Wanted to rush ahead to get the cube but didn't want to play full clears, so decided to run through the Dry Hills to find the waypoint. Ended up getting surrounded in the Dry Hills and I couldn't S & E without leaving a partial clear of the Rocky Waste, so I decided to just let her die. I'd already screwed up by only putting on MF gear at 15 and wasting points in the Javelin tree; going to restart with a Druid I think.

Can't pass this one up :D

Lan, the up and coming Tesladin, and Aliza, the cold arrow rogue, have fought their way up to Coldcrow in The Cave. No s/u items yet, and only one topaz and emerald each. No gold or green jewels. Here's hoping their luck improves!

I have no knowledge whatsoever about the mechanics involved in gambling s/u items. Can someone perhaps give me the cliffnotes regarding which low level s/u items are feasible to gamble and at what lvl to start trying for them?

Started a character for this tournamet: A barbarian named Yerd. He and his sidekick Amplisa the fire-rogue found three gem shrines from Dark Wood. I tried to take screencaptures but they came all black. Could it be that my videocard doesn't like the 800*600 resolution.

Any ideas?

EDIT: What would you do? Up one chipped topaz three times and put it in some helm or up three chipped topazes and put them into armor?

EDIT2: Forget. He died in Tristram, mobbed by goatmen and Griswald.

3 gem shrines in one area??!?!? Wow.

I'm not sure if I will keep going with my Tesladin in this tourny. The more I think about it, melee chars are 1) scary and 2) kind of a grind in HC single pass play. I might just finish up my random tournament necro and come back to this one with a different build.
 
I'm quite sure I start a new barbarian in this tourney as I want to run one, but I have my paladin that I run for awhile.

Started a new barbarian who tries to be a whirlwinder specialiced in axes. When Beril got her 12th level he started to gamble hand axes and third gamble got him The Gnasher. First S/U. Next gambling stop is at 17 when axes can produce Deathspade. I'm going to skip Large Axes at 16 because Axe of Fechmar has freezes target and I'm too fond of finding potions or items. (Those numbers are derived from this list that jiansoz posted a link in this thread on page 8. It gives to read the thread fully before starting to comment in it:scratchchin:)

This is third class I'm playing (the others are paladin and sorceress) and I must say that find potion is a wonderfull skill. From getgo it produces light potions instead of minor ones (and ocassionally a rejuvenation potion, but that just a side benefit) and selling those potions produces much cash. Beril is much more richer than my other characters at the same point in game. I'm following the Guide to Untwinked, Single-pass early game Magic Finding by jiansonz with my characters, as kitting out them is what I want. With the paladin I found that when he got level 6 he didn't have the money to buy ring mail from Charsi even though he had sold everything he found. Beril on the other hand could have bought three of those at level 6.

Funny thing is that as I've just started to play LoD The Gnasher is also a grailer for me.

Beril got level 17 somewhere in Tamoe Highland and started a massive gambling spree. 140K later, that's some 50 axes, nada. Not even a rare that I'd like to keep for some other character.

EDIT: Beril level 17 barbarian and fire rogue named Iantha at Outer Cloister Act I, 1 S/U equiped.

Funny thing was that almost all pelts found had two sockets, but the barbarian helms found didn't have any sockets except one rare had one socket.

Fireyogi has completed Act I, killing Andy on /p8. He is going to be a Armageddon Shock Wave Werebear. After having played to Act III in the Exposure tournament, this was much easier and more boring. The Rogue had good killing speed with a 3 emerald chippie Long Bow and tanking as a Werebear worked great. I would Maul bosses and champions, otherwise I wouldn't swing. The Carrion Vine did a great job of keeping my life tanked up. An Oak Sage boosted my life and occasionally distracted. I summoned a wolf occasionally for nasty bosses, but would then dismiss them so that the Rogue could get the kill. I spent the whole Act gambling daggers. I have wondered if gambling for a unique would be as tedious and boring as I thought it would be and I discovered it was worse. For Andy, I had planned to hit her with Molten Boulders and Fissure, but that didn't hurt her much. What worked was focusing solely on keeping a wolf in front of her. The only S/U I got in the Act was a Hsarus' Iron Heel from Andy. Now, I have three things to gamble for.

Edit: Countess gave me a Ral drop - what a waste

For Act II, I have a 3 socket ethereal Bardiche for a Defensive merc. I plan to hang back until level 24 when I get Shock Wave.

Fireyogi is ready to enter the palace:
* He started with on S/U, Hsarus' Iron Heel
With an Act 2 defensive merc, I hung in the back in werebear form and watched him kill everything. Very safe. The only boost I give him is more life from the Oak Sage
* AT level 24, I got Shockwave and I bumped it at level 25. It doesn't help the merc as much as I was hoping because he takes so long to kill enemies. He was getting three free jabs with a 1.6 second stun, but it took all 3 to kill something
* I gambled extensively for Belts and Buckleers to extend my Hsarus set, but no luck (no surprise)
* In the Lost City, I got my first unique - Leadcrow. Not a fit for this build and not useable by any merc. Not good
* Fangskin dropped my second S/U weapon - a Deathspade. It's a weapon I really like as I enjoy blinding enemies to support the merc. However, it puts me one bad weapon drop away from having useless mercs

Looks quite a bit like you are on a trail similar to my amazon. Not far from 3 crappy weapons, with Deathspade as the best. My merc did have a weapon throughout the whole Act II, you might not be so lucky.

I have been thinking about trying some type of shifter Druid myself in this tourney. One that would help the merc as well, with maxed HoW.

I would guess that you plan for a much longer term than I do as I only plan for getting through Normal. Both my succesful Paladins had Conversion as main crowd control, so I am not so keen on that now. And I have already Guardianed a Thorns based build - a Necromancer (that also was a Lord of Mages) with a Thorns merc and beefy golem. He could Amp monsters but Thorns was still a weak killer in Hell - merc did more damage...

Next time I play a Pally, it will probably be a Fist of the Heavens user, Charger or Smiter.

Have you considered weapon speed problems with restricted weapon choices? Fireyogi is painfully slow with Deathspade in Werebear form. Having a 2-handed axe, hammer or polearm makes a big difference in DPS for a weredruid.

I find it interesting that I am doing Armageddon werebears for both this tourney and Exposure, but I am playing them so differently because of the tourney rules.
 
For this tourney, is there any point in keeping chippies? Or should I just roll them up to flawed? Emeralds and Topazes can be socketed. What use are the other gems?

What can runes be used for besides upping rares?

What about jewels that aren't green or yellow?
 
I was a bit bored with my twinked projects, so thought I'd keep HC Gunther company here.

Envy the Necromancer has reached level 15 and the Black Marsh. Thinking about a Novamancer but that is a long way off being a reality and we will see what items drop along the way. At the moment he is dropping 1 point into pre-reqs and the rest into DV. Play is throw out an Amp and then short bow with emerald chippies (only 2 so far). Clay Golem to tank and merc for supporting fire. 5 topazes so far, so 45 MF. No S/Us, although gambling daggers - should probably be gambling polearms or spears to increase my chances of maybe being able to keep an Act 2 merc when I get there.

You could reroll non-green/yellow jewels with the Pgem recipe (I'm pretty sure that rerolls the color too?). Not much use for gems or jewels otherwise. And I think you meant runes for upping uniques, not rares?
