New games suck, I'm back to D2

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

Welcome back!

I remember that when I started coming to the forums, there was Fishythisbuild, Fishythatbuild and only some months later I made the connection when I read the guides... "Oooooh made by Nightfish... that explains the build name!" ^^

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

Ha, Arcanum! I'm generally not into the older RPG games(yet), but I loved Arcanum, for it let me play as a half-ogre with 4 intelligence who could barely make a sentence. Talking to NPCs was priceless.

Duuuuude, you must try Fallout 2 with an idiot character (int 1 or 2, I think, no higher). Then go to Klammath and talk to Torr, the village idiot. Thank me later. God that scene was so hilarious, I kid you not.

Snif. They don't make games like that anymore. It's the little things that make a game great, not how many gallons of blood bodies can explode into...

@l-w:
Hehe, I didn't forget fallout tactics, I just didn't like it as much. To me, it seriously paled in comparison to JA2. I'd probably still take it over Fallout 3 any day, though. Try though I might, I just cannot get into a Bethesda game. I doubt I ever will.

Deus Ex I have and luv it for ever and ever, too. Unfortunately, Deus Ex 2 was kinda like the Matrix Sequels. So, my hopes for Deus Ex 3 are kinda... low. Very low.

As far as max levels in games go... Well, it depends on whether levels actually mean anything. Okay, in D2 you can go up to 99, but really, you could probably give out the same stat and skill points over 33 levels and it'd be fine too. After all, it's not like I didn't dump 19 consecutive points into the same skill most of the time. If you know what I mean? The numbers themselves don't really say much without the context.

Oh yea, I do have high hopes for the witcher 2 as well. I really liked the first game, even though it wasn't quite perfect, but at least it focused on the things I value most in games: Telling a compelling story. Even though I personally didn't need the gratuitous sex scene cards, but those are optional anyway. Mostly.

Funny enough, originally I only called this a "skelliemancer". By the time I wrote the 2.0 version, the name had been coined by Gohanman and stuck. In retrospect I shoulda called it a laid-back-o-mancer or something. But what's done is done. People will call things as they please. My WS K-zon build isn't know as such either. I should make more builds for the same char, just to see how people will name them then. Fishy#1zon and Fishy#2zon?

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

Seriously am i the only person on these boards that still have fallout tactics and love it for its damn fine challenge?

Nope. I even had to search for it a year or so after it released and the only version i first found was in French (and i suck at and hate French). Once i found a copy in English i wasted no time to buy it. (budged price obviously) It's a fine game in it's own right, but i wouldn't really throw it together with the other two titles though as it has little to do with them (apart from the IP).
(and there was also a fourth "console" Fallout game, but lets not mention that as it's a POS from hear/say)

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

After a bit of reading on the forums I think I can at least rule out of a few things along the lines of potential projects for me. I can't really see myself doing any more guides as the current "metagame", as it were, seems to defeat that point by and large.

I guess these days everyone is hip deep in runes and pretty much everything will fly if you strap a jetpack to it's butt. In terms of Richard Dean Anderson, it feels to me like we went from McGyver to Stargate, if you know what I mean? (In McGyver used his wits to cobble up solutions from seemingly useless junk, in Stargate he... shoots problems. If that doesn't work he gets a bigger gun. If that still doesn't work he get's grenades, etc.).

Respecs also turn things on their head a bit. With many builds, half the trouble was figuring out how to get there. Maybe it's just me, but I feel that it takes away a bit from the game if you can just pick transitory skills and then ditch them completely later on. I can certainly see how it makes the game more accessible, but I dislike overly accessible things. I'd make an inappropriate comparision about a certain type of woman with similar behavior in regards to her interactions with various men here if I wasn't way too classy to do that.

So, I'll probably work up my own set of "house rules" and use those for my SP and to a lesser extent, MP games. That's the good thing about SP, you can play any way you like. Just like we did back in the day when everyone on b.net had massive amounts of runes and we were happy to get an Um.

But it doesn't really make sense writing guides along this mindset. Maybe I'll do a writeup if I get another guardian that seems worth it.

Planescape: Torment is perfect.

Wait, what? We are in complete agreement on something? Isn't that in the top 5 of signs that judgement day draws near? You know, along with cats and dogs living in harmony, etc? :badteeth:

Welcome back and good luck with your first characters. Any idea on which one you will use first?

Well, seeing how I am more than a little rusty I actually followed my own necromancer guide to get back into the game... :D

P.S.Love the Snoo Snoo reference.

Honestly, who doesn't hope to go that way?

I thought it was because the fishymancer and fishyzon worked like fishermen, throwing their nets into a sea of monsters to see what they caught. :scratchchin:

And yes, new games aren't good enough to get me to upgrade my computer. Or maybe the games are good enough and I've just reached that age where I don't care for new stuff, because the old stuff is good enough. I read somewhere that it happens around 30 or so, and I'm well past that now. Couldn't even finish playing The Witcher, so I'm pretty sure I'm done for.

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

I did exactly same thing. Tried DA2, played for 1 hour during 3 weeks and admited that it was just plain boring. Crysis 2 was promising but couldn't play it for more than 20 minutes. Demon's Souls on Ps3 is only new generation game I've actually enjoyed and I think I managed to sank ~150 hours into it. If it just had more variation on ranged/spellcaster playstyle and had item hoarding element. Lucky the sequel is coming out in few months.

We will see how long D2 can keep me interested this time. I don't really know where the desire to play it suddenly came after 9 month break but gotta take "advantage" of that as long as it lasts. I might move on to other old games though, Baldur's Gate 2 is still my favourite.

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

OT slightly: Hey did you guys know that Dragon Age 2 sold 1 million copies, and Bioware want to thank you for buying it by giving you Mass Effect2 for free.

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

I need to google to check if you're kidding or not. But I can easily see this piece of crap selling lots of times. I bought it blindly too. And the commercial reviewers all rated it highly. Only users and independent reviewers gave it the trashing it deserves.

Either way, this was likely the last money bioware saw from me and this is sad indeed.

Good catch on playing an idiot character is a lot of fun to replay the game only to see that:thumbsup:

Of course Fallout tactics falls in comparison to JA2, JA2 is a fantastic game fallout tactics is a spin off of fallout 1 and 2 with a little bit more tactical spin. They are very different games but i still like to play them both.

Deus Ex 2 was a failure in my opinion so far i heard Deus Ex 3 will be more like Deus Ex 1 and that can never be a bad idea.

Most never get to (soul)level 712 in demon souls its the level you need to get 99 in all attributes most stop at 125 or somewhere around there. I like the challenge though so i will get one character as close as possible one day.

The fact that everything costs souls makes it a interesting thing to do. nothing like dying and losing more then 50000 souls when you know your death will mean ever single monster will respawn at full power including what killed you in the first time. The fact that you gain the most souls when your life is at its lowest (dark would tendency) as well as the fact that the monsters are at their strongest at the same time may it a fun game to play.

Its one of the few games in recent years where i have actually felt scared about my character facing any monster. Mainly due to the fact that even the lowest monster can kill you in demon souls if you mess up.

@doppel true fallout tactics is the odd one out in the older fallout games, but its still a very fun game to play and one thing i love with these older games is that you are not pampered with. If you mess up its your own fault and you have to handle the consequences of that.

@pijus not surprising at all since people buy what ever has a brand name on it today. If its true what you say about bioware giving people mass effect 2 for free it is the only thing that would make buying DA2 more worth then crap. Mass effect 2 is at least not as bad as DA2.

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

On a whim I decided to check back on these forums just to see if fishy had returned to D2.

When I read your original post I almost fell over in my chair. I could not agree more about your comments on Bioware. They have utterly broken my heart with Dragon Age 2, and I too was thinking about coming back to good 'ol Diablo 2.

Nostalgic goggles or not, gaming should be fun.

This game is fun.

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

Welcome back, Nightfish! Not sure if you'll like Fishymancer 1.13, as they made CE even more deadly...

Ever get into Bard's Tale? You can play it on DosBox. Now that brings me back.

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

So you intend on starting untwinked? Do you still have your atma stashes or do you want to start untwinked simply for the challenge?

Creating your very own trademarked fishymancer is perfect either way. I have to admit though, my very favourite build of yours was the strafazon. Mowing down hordes then switching the charged strike for bosses was the most entertaining build I've played, actually.

EDIT: Are you going to use any mods at all? I myself cannot live without the red rune mod.

damnit people why do you forget that there was 3 fallout games long before Fallout 3 was released?

Seriously am i the only person on these boards that still have fallout tactics and love it for its damn fine challenge?

Also nightfish the Thief games are amazing you should really try them out. Another great game is Deus Ex.

As for Consoles the only game that keep me from losing all hope for console gaming is demon souls and its upcoming sequel dark souls.

I mean when was the last time a game was released on consoles that carter to hardcore players?

I love it i also love that i have died over 20 times on my level 53 character. That might sound high if you look at the max level of 60 in diablo 3 but no its so far away from high level in this game its funny.

With a max level of 712 i know i will play demon souls for quite some time:yes:

The witcher 2 will come out, BF3 will come out, guild wars 2 will come out tera will come out. Deus Ex human revolution will come out.

So there is still hope for gaming after all(i am sure i missed some other promising stuff)

So Demon's Souls is as good as it looks then? I've been eyeing that game off for 12 months or so (since it was first released in Oz), but haven't had the money to spare for it as of yet (we get ripped off mightily for games down here, new release games are in the $100-$120 range). Oh, and I only got my PS3 in Feb. ;)

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

Welcome back NF. My daughter raves about DA:O, she'll be disappointed with DA2 by the sounds of things.

@Friiser - I use to play Bard's Tale on my C64. I've still got it in the shed, as well as my Phantasie collection, TRS games, Legacy of the Ancients and Combots. I wonder is the old girl still works?

In my opinion, if you've got yourself a PS3, there is no reason not to get DS too, it's best game currently on the console and best (action)rpg in years. Can't you order it from abroad? You should be able to get it for less than 30 $ (normal edition, not the limited BP edition). Obviously you'll have to pay for shipping etc. but I doubt that's nowhere close to 100 bucks. Many people have bought PS3 just to be able to play DS and so far I haven't heard of anyone regretting it (outside of some people who find it just too hard, but I doubt that's an issue for a guy who plays D2 and is used to on difficulty levels of good old games). Sorry for hype :)

Well, since I'll be in MP for the most part, I doubt I'll mind. In SP CE pretty much wiped screens already so yea... I doubt the number of times I need to cast to clear the entire screen has changed. It's probably still "2".

I do dislike various parts of the 1.13 patch, though.

Ever get into Bard's Tale? You can play it on DosBox. Now that brings me back.

I have a Bard's Tale, but that's way too new for DosBox... Not a terrible game, though. Lots of snarky humor.

So you intend on starting untwinked? Do you still have your atma stashes or do you want to start untwinked simply for the challenge?

Going untwinked for the MP HC thing at the moment, but we're still debating that.

EDIT: Are you going to use any mods at all? I myself cannot live without the red rune mod.

You're in luck, then. 1.13 has built in colored runes. \o/

Welcome back NF. My daughter raves about DA:O, she'll be disappointed with DA2 by the sounds of things.

Probably. I guess it depends what she likes about the original. But you sorta have to like splatter movies in order to enjoy DA2. If dozens of bodies exploding in ridiculous gore don't make you happy, I can't see how you can sit through the game and have fun... If I wasn't slightly obsessive/compulsive about finishing what I start I wouldn't have played the game to conclusion myself...

Don't apologise, as I said, I've been eyeing the game since someone on a forum dedicated to Lost (would you believe it?) linked a review of it. First I had to wait for it to be released in Australia, now I'm waiting for it to drop in price (everything ends up in the bargain bin eventually). The only games I ever have, or ever will, pay full price for are D2 and D3. Currently EB are selling it for 69.95 new or 59 pre-owned, which puts it into drop hints for a birthday present territory (which is next month), but not discretionary spending territory.

I brought a PS3 to try out Final fantasy 13 :unimpressed: still have not completed it

I still own a PS3 because of Demons Souls. and loving it

Its one of the few games on a consoles that has been released the last 10 years or so that have had me feel scared when playing and given me any kind of rush when playing.

Its also one of the few games that have made me feel estatic after i have taken revenge on a monster that have killed me before.

Trust me you will want revenge often. But the feeling when you get past a annoying enemy or kill a difficult boss the first time is fantastic.

Demon souls 2 aka dark souls that is said to be even harder and it will be released this year or next:highfive:

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

from time to time i get back to infinity engine games, also i discovered recently Nethack (Vulture eye) for some nice gameplay
