Team Speak

Team Speak: ability to do voice communication, helpful for many multiplayer games.

Benifits: While team speak may not really be needed for softcore, in hardcore considering we are mortal good communication skills to keep characters alive would be helpful.

I have used team speak while playing online games for the longest time and in fact I used to not even be able to do online gaming without talking while playing.

Speaking as opposed to typing will let a player be able to drink potions while they are enaged in combat against monsters. This also will allow for quick communication skills such as relaying what special attirbutes an unique monster may have that could pose a problem to your party.

My proposal is the following, is to set up a team speak server for hardcore players to use.

There would be seperate rooms (channels) for players to go in these would be registered rooms. Players would be able to create an unregistered room and once no one is in the room and you log off the room disappears this could be helpful for random X events etc.

There could be two different sections one for bananas and the Gauss members if Gauss doesn't have a teamspeak/vent server. Of course everyone is more than encouraged to talk to each other even though characters would be on different realms, you never know another realm player may hvae advice or at least keep you company talking while playing.

Even if you dont have a headset to talk you could at least benifit from listening in as in my previous example in a paragrah or 2 above about the certain auras or abilities on a unique monster. This would also be helpful for uber runs etc.

So before even going about obtaining the team speak server I wanted to gauge the interest level in this. I do realize some people may have concerns over security with their computer safety and that I'm not well known here.

The only references about my creditability would come from players in another online game called Runescape that I played for 6 years. If you want the references I could go about supplying them but I am on my lunch hour at work at the moment.

Forgot to mention it could be advisble to have your log on name for teamspeak be your account name on d2 or this forum followed by a -of your real life name if u want to be called by that instead.

Re: Team Speak

cool idea but Ventrillo is better.. better uptime and less server lag then teamspeak .. also free to download like teamspeak

Re: Team Speak

I agree with Wxx, i have used both Vent, Skype and TS for Wow, and i must say that in terms of user friendliness and quality, vent beats the rest hands down.

Re: Team Speak

Teamspeak or Vent doesn't matter to me, I simply have used Team speak for years. If a larger portion of people want to use Vent that is more than acceptable.

Re: Team Speak

The only downside to Vent is cost... a Teamspeak server is free and can be run on any old PC. I used to run one for WoW actually.

Re: Team Speak

Gauss actually has a ventrilo server but it's not used alot ( yet? )
Also it's only 8 slots max I think so that's not alot :(

Re: Team Speak

As far as the cost is concerned yes Team speak would be cheaper when I operated a server a 20 slot was only 56 dollars for one year. I had it with instantteamspeak.com and I had them for 2 years of service. Excellent uptimes etc.

I am curious why Gauss's vent server isnt used much.

Re: Team Speak

Its worse than that I'm afraid... I am playing again. =)

I went to Best Buy last week to see how much the D2 discs might cost, thinking they would be around $10.00. But no way am I paying $39.00.

Still, fun to lurk here from time to time.

Re: Team Speak

Baalos, iirc you can download the game from the Blizzard site as long as you have a set of cd-keys so if you just lost the discs (as we all have from time to time) it's not the end.

If you don't have access to a key feel free to send me a PM. I don't game anymore and I accumulated a few spare sets you're more than welcome to. Anything to get some of the oldschool players going again.

On the subject of TS/Vent, we have at least one server we can run through Banana for Vent. We use it when we CTA or when we have a lot of the major players online, but over time it fell by the wayside.

It works well for dedicated Baal runs, though unless you know each other really well I find it is sometimes not worth the speed benefit. It's great for telling people "FE" during battle while being able to pot, but asking for Chant etc. is a pain because unless you can recognize voices or you specify what character you are it doesn't do much.

Cheers

Listen to Tai Baalos. Tai knows......Tais is wise.........return to the Dark Side......it is your destiny.

Re: Team Speak

I love that my role in this forum is that of an insidious predator luring people back to this game or over to East....

Booya! Great to see ya posting my friend!

Yeah you never know with this game, I went from being vapor for nearly two years (or was it three? four?) to now I'm probably one of the more active players in this forum. Playing some every day without fail pretty much. Well, except when I took my vacation in Hawaii a couple weeks back I did manage to stay away from the game then. :D

And we all love you for it.

Like said, its nice to be able to talk sometimes, but other times, its a pain when people start talking over each other (by mistake or purpose) or if you dont reconize everyones voice. I found a mix of talk/type works best. Like talk FE, type "Chant".

Just adding to what Tai said. Vent works really well if your whole team is using it (listening in at the very least), and only your team is using it.

If you end up with:

A) Half your team in Vent and half using chat. What you get is the Vent half of your team are very well informed about what is going on. While the chat half of your team have no idea what is going on... In fact, they probably don't even know that there is communications taking place.

B) Part of your group in Vent & part of another group in Vent. What you get is confusion. Someone will say something like "she's coming out now" (referring to Andy)... and the other team will be doing something completely different, they will have no idea who said it, or what they're talking about, etc.

Those two reasons are sometimes enough to stop using it in my opinion, but it can get worse...

C) Add in a 3rd player who's solo MF'ing, but will chime in when people start discussing weapon/build choices. What you get is more chance of talking over each other, more opinions, more confusion.

D) Add in a 4th person, who's not even playing, but just hanging out to chat. Conversations will veer off in the direction of someone's mom... someone's drunken adventures last night... someone's speeding ticket, etc. People will of course start talking over him about the FE council member in the top left and nobody will hear anything!

E) Add booze. For more confusion and random conversation/bad opinions!

F) Or, trade all of the above in for an empty Vent channel. Someone logs in... "huh, nobody here", and leaves.
