Green with Envy II Tournament

Re: Green with Envy II Tournament

Welcome to Hell, Pepper! Too bad about Lister, though.

I’m not as rigorous as you are about full clears, but Venus had to abandon a battle herself yesterday. The snakes gave her a lot of trouble overall, but at least in the open areas we had room to maneuver strategically. However in Fangskin’s temple we got mobbed at the stairs. Without teleport it would have been impossible to survive. She was able to hop across the room and open a TP. Then she would pop back in via either the TP or the stairs, and try to take down a viper or two before Mizan got mobbed. However they were just too fast for her, so after about half an hour of trying Venus just teleported to the altar, grabbed the amulet, and left. Fangskin has taken a few of my HC characters, so I have to balance a healthy fear of him with a strong desire to wipe him out.

Pepper's Hell stats and fire skills. Notice her low lightning resistance. It was the best I could do.
We’re in the same boat, it seems. Venus’ resists are 29/65/19/-72 with all but four inventory spaces full of charms.

Poison all the way, for a couple reasons:
1. Hwanin's Bill already has 40 IAS. An additional 15 doesn't even reach the next BP. Nor would a Shael, if it was legal.
2. Even if it did, the PEmerald's impressive poison duration is probably more helpful for PMH than a minor speed increase, especially considering the weapon's sub-par damage in Hell, where prolonged monster regen is significant.
I used an emerald in the bill as well, for the same reasons. I hope we’re on the right track!

And done :). I mean Meph is dead. In the end I had feeling that it was easier (or rather less dangerous) than on NM (that time I didn’t have points in summon resist iirc, so my army had hard time). Current tactic: a lot of patience. Filip stood as far as possible (you can see from screenshots), decrepify and clay golem were spammed, regularly visited town to heal army (I knew that poison can be lethal for them, so this was important part of strategy). Meph was surrounded with skellies and decrepified so he didn’t use his light attack at all, only few times frost novea, but Filip was far so it didn’t touch him. Only that poison cloud was annoying, but still skelletons were surprisingly durable (I only once returned to DoH 2 to re-build 4 new skellies. Maybe we would have managed that without this, but just in case. I never do full clears so I followed bladejj's advice and didn’t have problem with tourney rules :)).

Drop was disappointment, no greenie.

And even though everything went well, it is important to keep patience and full concentration all the time. Few my HC chars died in past just because I said to myself "all is good, so let’s go faster....death", one learns from mistakes.

Next: act IV (my less favourite)

Holy cow! I hadn't looked at the table in a while, myself, so thought you were still in NM. Congrats on getting so far!

Amen, brother. My impatience is probably the cause of most of my character deaths. Good luck in Act IV!

Re: Green with Envy II Tournament

After the desert areas of Act II, the palace was a breeze. None of the inhabitants were dual immune, and we could hide behind cages for many of them. In the Arcane Sanctuary one of the legs held two boss packs of Specters at the end, but we were able to teleport back and deal with them. I think the emerald in Mizan’s bill does help; he was able to deal with packs of one or two Specters all by himself.

The treasure piles at the ends of the Arcane Sanctuary were most welcome. Venus had been hemorrhaging money resurrecting Mizan earlier, but was able to gain most of it back by selling loot. I’m usually about one second late in teleporting back to pull his fat out of the fire. Teleport was also handy in pulling him back in the Tomb, to lure undead away from Guardians. (Taking a page from Pepper, she rained Meteors down on Guardians while Mizan kept the skeletons occupied.) Venus also relied on Teleport in Duriel’s chamber. Her strategy was to keep hopping around and spam Orbs, which required a few trips to town for potion restocking but made short work of him. He didn’t drop any greens, but then neither did anyone in the entire act!

Re: Green with Envy II Tournament

Allisandrina is making decent progress in Hell. Cain has been rescued for the third time.

To bring down the danger level, she needs to carefully plan most of the boss fights. How long will the Shadow hold up? Can I tank here? Are there enough corpses to kill this FE boss? Etc.

What she should not do is to get flattened by explosions.
(No, it was not the FE explosion! Just the CE Frost Nova with -40 cold resist (although the FE may have added some fire damage to it)).

Not much in the ways of exciting finds in Hell yet. Found a 10% Ruby Small Charm, which was nice (and very much needed).

Re: Green with Envy II Tournament

Things are going well for Allisandrina and Narphet. I struggle a lot less than I thought I would, and several areas have had no hiccups at all.

I got a very nice reward from a nightmarish archer boss in the Tower Cellars level 3: Laying of Hands. Excellent news for my fire resistance, which now jumped into the 60´s. Cold is still about -30 and lightning is 23.

The Pit level 2 is nearly always dangerous. This was no exception. Very early, an 'untankable' rogue melee boss came running. The only good thing was that she had no minions with her. FICI, so Naphet was useless and taking a chance and bring down a Meteor wouldn´t help. The Lightning attack would be too dangerous to use (3 hits needed per release). Shadow could do it, but her variant is likely too weak to overcome the regeneration. Exploding corpses? Maybe, but that would mean to bring in more monsters. No thanks!

Venom + Blade Fury, then? Too bad I´ve stashed Cleglaw´s gloves - that extra partial set bonus +damage on the sword would have helped. Now I just had base Long Sword damage (with chance of Deadly Strike, and +300% vs Demons) and level 1 Venom. I gave it a shot. And it worked! I needed 4 mana potions but she actually did go down. Yes!!

Catacombs 2 had another boss with the same immunities: a CE spider. BF was too weak to work here. I drank thawing potions, switched to Isenhart´s Parry, cast Fade and killed the spider with lightning attacks, taking the CE nova. It wasn´t that bad now that my resist was decent.

I used full Isenhart´s against Andariel (for the blocking). Shadow soaked up several blows, and Alli could also hold her own in melee. Andariel fell quickly to mighty flames. No greens in the drop, though.

Good draw in the Sewers: no ranged attackers (other than the ones in Radament´s pack).

Other greens found lately: Sigon´s Visor and then Radament gave Alli her 4th  Isenhart´s Case.

Eek! That was certainly too close for comfort. I’m glad to see Allisandrina still survives.

Venus is also still going, and has just set foot in Act IV. She has had plenty of close calls herself, but is managing to keep one step ahead of the game. The Flayer Jungle was only accessible through the Great Marsh, but fortunately that area was free of Gloams. What it did have was Bramble Hulks, including three champion packs and one Might aura boss. They beat up Mizan pretty bad, since I always seem to be 0.5 seconds too late in pulling him away. I was glad to see the end of the jungles, and especially the Flayer Dungeon.

Battlemaid Sarina was a particularly nasty battle, which started with a stair trap boss pack of vampires. We used portals at the ends of the ‘T’ map to separate Sarina from her friends, but it took three merc resurrections and three full rejuvs to get the tome. In the sewers was another NDE, due to those pesky dolls. Up until now Venus has been able to stash extra rejuv potions for later use; this act marked the first time she started to withdraw from that account. I hope the supply lasts long enough...

For Meph we used the moat trick. This is the first time I have put it to effective use, even with this team in previous acts. It made short work of him, but to no gain. He dropped three rares and two blues, but no greens.

Sweet! It isn’t every day that a drop gives you 6X improvement in resists! Gloves were the only set drop Venus saw this act as well. Unfortunately they were Magnus’ Skin – blech! :yuck: She did get one nice find: a green-colored Ruby Jewel (23%). She’ll have to wait until Act V to use it, though. Other interesting finds included Headstriker, and Todesfaelle Flamme. Headstriker is a new unique for me, and it was ethereal to boot. (Which makes it effectively useless, but still notable.) As for Todesfaelle Flamme, I just think has a cool name.

Yes, great fighter gloves. That cold resist still scares me though. That's about 700-800 damage on a nova? Not counting any piggyback effects. IIRC I lost over 900 life on a frost nova with a character whose CR was not as bad as yours. Scary. And that chill duration = :( Long blue walk of shame? :badteeth:

Pepper likely won't see very much playing time for a while. I'm hitting a groove with my Midas zon, breaking into mid-Hell, experimenting with the wonders of Lightning Bolt, and (you will like this part, jiansonz) occasionally bashing stuff with a ferocious elite green staff. I don't want to risk switching back and forth between two difficult oddball characters in Hell. But I will get back to Pepper when I'm done with Ivory. Good luck to everyone.

Well, not from this player, we wont: Arrgh!!

It was the first false tomb, and it started innocently with some Apparitions, but a massive mob of Gorebellies was waiting around the corner. I saw only that there were Champs at first (brutes in several colours) but then my Shadow got Cursed and I went "Oh, F*&#%!". By this time, they had already filled up the path to the hallway, so no easy escape to new territory. I tried Mind Blast, but any Conversions didn´t happen (I actually have no idea if there were any minions where I clicked, might have been only Champs and the boss...). I laid down some flames, but after two hits from a Champ (when I was Cursed) that knocked me down to near-death, I retreated out and resurrected Narphet.

I knew I had to play perfectly now, and that might still not help. CoS right away, then a couple of Mind Blasts. Didn´t take now either. Flames! Got two Meteors down on a Champ. It would have died if it had not knocked me back and moved. MB it back! It died and I was about to plant a Death Sentry. But by now, I had precious little space to move left, my two companions were dead and I was Cursed. I drank a full rejuve and Dragon Flighted as far away from the entrance as I saw Gorebellies. Alas, I did not quite reach the opposite side of the mob. Stunlocked, 3-4 quick hits and I died in less than half a second.

This was a great ambush, and I applaud it. I know since past Phoenix Strikers (I´ve had three that made it past this act) that Gorebellies are among the worst monster type there is for this character/merc setup.
It was like a freakin´tidal wave rolling towards the entrance! I can not think of many characters (even twinked ones!) that would not have a very hard time here.

There were only two things I could have done better, I think:
1. At the start, move more quickly around the corner so I saw the whole threat, and try to flee somewhere else.
2. At the last part, get out of the entrance once more, to heal the curse, then try the Dragon Flight without being Amped.

OK, that´s tournament Phoenix Striker #5 I´ve gotten killed, I think (but one was in a character switch tourney, so I only got to play her for one act).

I am too frustrated now to do any good write-ups on the progress I made up to this point, so I´ll just show the pictures and add some quick notes:

Curiously small Maggot Lair level 3.

After what was probably my most intense Coldwolm battle ever.

What is wrong with this picture? This was a boss made from a Monster Shrine. The game neglected to say it was Cursed as well.

I had an amazing CVT level 2 experience. Fled from Fangy´s pack, right into three Guardians and a horde of skeletons. Portal jumps and a great battle later, it was down to Fangy and one of her minions. Fangy was CE. A Faded Shadow could tank her well, and I snuck in and released Meteors while the shadow was soaking up the bolts.

We could handle tough Blunderbores, but only if we were alone with them and with decent space to work with.

Scoring:
Level 79 * -1 = -79
Waypoints 98 * 1 = 96
Quests 64 * 2 = 128
Greens 15 * 3 = 45

Total:190

All in all, a very enjoyable tournament (it is a great concept!).

Nooooo! R.I.P. Allisandrina.

Stun from Gorebellies is indeed tough to overcome. You held your control longer than I would have in the same situation. Allisandrina was arguably a stronger character than Venus, too, since she took down both Coldworm and Fangskin whereas we had to grab their treasures and flee. In Hell I generally follow the coward’s route, abandoning from full clears and only going where necessary.

Venus is still alive. The Outer Steppes had burning souls, so she tiptoed around and left as soon as she found the stairs. In the Plains of Despair we cleared out much more looking for Izual. It seems like half of the monsters in Hell Act IV are either a boss or part of a pack! And what is it with Mizan and pillars? Does he not see the Venom Lords approaching!?!

Izual went down fast to Meteor, and dropped Cathan’s Rule. Too bad Venus already has one. She just needs that darned amulet to complete the set.

The stairs to the City of the Damned were covered by a boss pack of extra fast, might aura, spectral hit Stranglers. Not a terribly hard-hitting foe, but they made for a slow choke point. The aura also enhanced nearby Pit Lords and mages, which added to the fun. It took a long time to clear out the stairway so we could get through. The boss dropped Death’s Touch, though, which is a new addition to Venus’ stash. Tonight we will go looking for Hephasto…

Oh wow, I totally agree. That was a perfect storm of evil; combining the worst map, and the worst monsters (powerful/CI/knockback/stun/boss/champ), and the worst possible placement. On top of that your merc was nothing more than a slab of liver for them to flatten in a couple hits.

Every time I enter a Tomb, that's a formation I dread because those monsters are so big and that hallway so narrow. I've faced that scenario twice, once with a powerful clay golem (immune to knockback) so I was very grateful for that. Another time with a zon, I was very lucky because some urns in the middle of the hallway restricted the gorebelly boss packs to single-file!

Possibly you could have escaped and broken through, but hindsight is always 20/20. I don't think anyone could've played it better under "life or death" real-time pressure. RIP Allisandrina. :( I rate that death a 10!

Wait, you're saying the monster hit you and Cursed you w/o the Cursing ability? That's pretty cool. These monster shrines can be weird. Awesome name too, Gray Bite.

Re: Green with Envy II Tournament

Venus has slain Diablo for the last time!

She entered the River of Flame, and went first for the WP. With that activated, she lured Hephasto over to the WP and opened a TP nearby. Then we had a round of revolving door action. Mizan would get in a few whacks, then jump through the TP to heal in town and return via the WP. Hephasto was FI+CI, so Venus couldn’t do much after Staticing him down to half life. Instead she tried to keep Mizan alive, which wasn’t easy. In the end Mizan died three times before Hephasto died once. (The HF rune was an Io, not that it matters to Venus.)

Out on the bridge, there were two Urdar boss packs and champions which had to be cleared out. With Allisandrina’s fall fresh in our memories, we treated them with respect. The Knights in the Fortress were as annoying as ever, again including two bosses and champions. We did our best to keep Mizan from plunging right in, but in the end Venus ended the act with 300,000 GP less than she started with due to his many resurrections. And that's after picking up virtually everything she could find to sell back.

After several scary moments with the OK and seal bosses, Diablo himself was no trouble. (FO really does him in.) He was of no use to Venus, either, dropping only four rares and a blue. One act to go, and I might actually have my first Guardian! :whistling:

All random bosses in Hell should have three abilities. This one only had two abilities listed, but it was indeed Cursed as well. I suspect it was a display bug. The 'convert regular monster to boss' routine might have been confused that 'Undead' was already listed.

Filip was slowly progressing through act IV. The biggest trouble was mostly when he met bosspack, which wasn’t possible to kill (it means HF aura+PI boss or so), surprisingly we had really luck for such bosspacks. It wasn’t too dangerous, but at the same time army wasn’t able to do their work, se we always had to get rid of such boss at first (it means lure boss away). Another typical problem was „crowd“ in some narrow place.

Gladly Plains of Despairs was without souls, and Izual wasn’t too big problem.

Hephasto was scarying thanks to his conviction aura, but it was rather psychological effect than that he would have been really nasty. And from HF – Hel, but that doesn’t matter. In fact hel could be useful for potential unsocketing, but I’ve already mule it away and I doubt I would use it, so it is better to keep it in safe.

Chaos Sanctuary was fun ( = irony!). Usualy we ended like this (in better case of course), but quite often merc didn’t survive (I was only surprised that skeletons mostly manage to survive IM till town. I cast tp immediately when I heard that infamous sound, but very often merc died and most of skeletons survived). But otherwise army was quite durable, we met several Venom lords bosspacks (I considered that as practise before last Seal ), army manage to kill minions at first and lonely boss then wasn’t problem (this one PI, thankfully not with decrepify).

My resists before „big fight“ were like these (even though this screenshot is unfitting, I forgot to make one earlier).

Continuation after lunch :).

Re: Green with Envy II Tournament

Continue:

Opening Seals has always same order for me. First of all, the easiest one. After first monster was dead, CE made its work and whole group died in couple of seconds.

Second Seal with Lord de Seis was much more harder. After opening it, Filip returned through tp to town and came from WP side, group was divided, Lord de Seis stayed behind the corner so we could comfortably kill group without annoying aura and curse. And Lord de Seis alone could do nothing.

Third Seal I considered as „not so much hard as previous one“, but after seeing green aura under our feet, I again used tp-town-wp-back trick. It was great idea, because we managed to lure out Venom lords in two independant groups – pic1, pic2 and mainly without Infector. These groups were important for re-building army and mainly for creating revives. Such revives proved good against Diablo on NM and worked greatly on Hell as well. So we started our fight, same tactic as on NM – run to the center of Chaos Sanctuary (on way we lost somehow one revive), army stayed in the middle, Filip out of the start (to be albe to move sidelong), spam decrepify + clay golem. I don’t know what target Diablo chose for his attact, but neither his lightening nor his fire attack hurt us too much. Lightening didn’t kill anyone, fire attack was lethal only for merc and golem, three times Filip returned to town for merc (gladly no inprisoned tp). Slowly but successfuly Diablo died – pic1, pic2. No green drop.

Army rest almost completed, so I decided to kill Shenk as well. On way Filip had fun with these big revives, so it was quite easy to reach first WP and kill Shenk. And look at those nice effects – in fire – in cold. Later I noticed that unique cuirass there, nice drop even though it’s worthless in this tourney.

That’s for now :).
