I don't duel or pk, but from what I gather, after a (possibly long) while, you've done virtuallly all there is to do with computer generated monsters, can handle most situations and look for something new.
This something new is PvP. Computer controlled monsters are fairly predictable, but people aren't. That's the difference, as I understand it.

Sums it up quite adequately. You know, there is a hostile button in D2, and I use it because it is there and it is an option I paid for. It is as simple as that. I do not exclusivly PK, and can also enjoy a thourough monster bashing, but I do hunt and kill.
The real question would be: since it is part of the game Diablo II, why not?
At any rate, this will turn into a flamefest anytime now. Please take your asbesthos capes and hope for the best.

I say, if you got legit pked, it's pretty much your own fault for not at least heading to town when the hostile sounder went off. Congratulate him on a move well played, add this to your list of lessons learned, and... suck it up?
If you got tppked then, in my opinion, it's pretty much your own fault for playing near people in public games. Curse yourself for doing something so foolish, add it to your list of lessons learned, and suck it up!

Funny.
I *very* rarely pk, and even feel kind of guilty when I lie about my damage/life to get someone to the blood moor to duel, and yet I'd hate to see the feature go ~_~

what i dont like is when you get killed by player when you just want to kill monsters
and a lead designer said what they were doing in d3
pvp, but more restricted. They don't want to allow "griefing" other players.

Since you post here, I suppose someone PKed you or a friend of yours.
Since you say your post is not about TPPK, I suppose a char much lower in level than you ( or your friend ) gave you a beating.
Now my question : What were you thinking, when you heared the hostile sound?
Let me guess : I´m going to teach that level 16 pally, whom to hostile.
Just for your info, I don´t PK, never have, but I think the button is there for a reason and see PKers as a 'natural selection'. If you really think, you can teach that low level a lesson, be prepared for the worst, otherwise just stay in town. If you can´t stay the heat, leave the kitchen.

I never though anyone could PK because they want to get their money's worth from the game... best analogy I can think of is me buying food at a restaurant and eating everything, even when I'm full and don't want to eat anymore...

Because after a while PvM gets boring and HC dueling scene is a joke with everyone maphacking to scan your gear, fighting only those they can realistically beat and then chickening if they're in danger.
PK opens up an entire new field of potential victims. If you do it legitly they have more than enough time to avoid you or leave, so in my opinion if they stay they are agreeing to fight you. In addition, if they have chicken they'll get booted when hostile, so you can usually assume that those who stay are either geared to the teeth, stupidly overconfident or PKKers and that none of them will be chicken users.
