RIP Charles_Wright. Who'll be next?

A couple quick notes:

1. When you are finished with a character, please post in the thread. I am keeping track, and if it turns out that everyone finishes earlier than Saturday, I'll give the go-ahead to start on the next act. If that doesn't happen, no problem... but if it does, the eager beavers among us can get to work

2. I am keeping a spreadsheet of all characters, what player they should be with, what act they are in, etc. If anything ever seems weird, just ask. I will probably make this into a new tournament table that will be posted in the thread, perhaps even later today.

Char recieved from Sir P. Many thanks.
Please, if the char you received is woosy, then feel free to improve him before sending him on :-)

I know that it is probably considered a valid tactic to send on an unplayable char, but let's play nice eh ? (please - pretty please ?)

Looking forward to giving the zon a run

Well I finished Tennyson, send him on, and are now already playing sidney, I thought that wouldn't matter. Actually Sidney is already running around in the false tombs, looking but not finding duriel. (Yeah, for exp and charms indeed, Duriel will be very easy!)

I had wondered about this, as there hadn't really been any discussion pre start up. I never really came up with a solid conclusion on my own. so here are my two thoughts.

First: It is, on some level, an unfair request, as it seems that part of the challenge of the tournament is to be the last one standing while everyone else has died. So, it doesn't seem to be in bad form at all to try to hinder the competition with wacky builds (I mean you will have to survive it for an entire act, so it isn't like you are giving them a disadvantage you didn't have).

It seems like a balancing act, if you go to much screw your neighbor, you will like end with a deeds to show for it.

Second: It is a friendly tournament and maybe the challenge is to play with the gear you are given, maybe we should make chars that will show who can play the most varied with random gear.

I am personally leaning to the first, because if it was more the second, there wouldn't really be a need to switch chars.

I for one look forward to getting that char that someone somehow got through an act with wierd skills and see if I can squeek out one more act to pass the crap to the next guy in line.

Naughty freekje, bad bad! :badteeth:

It's hard to resist, I know. But please, next time, wait until everyone's ready (or at least until I give the go-ahead).

As for the question of "unplayable characters": it's up to you to place points as you wish. If you make a character unplayable, then that might be a strategy to kill off someone ahead of you in the table. But remember, there are a lot of very talented players in this tournament, and plenty of folks with lots of HC tournament experience... they'll probably survive even with the worst of builds, while a less experienced player might get their deeds. In the end, your decisions might come back to haunt you--and if they do, it will most likely be in the end of the tournament, when the stakes are the highest.

But that warning given, there are no rules about stat and skill points for a reason... to permit as much mayhem as people wish to create.

Ok sorry. :embarassed:

I thought that the week-rule was a minimum, but I now know it's also a maximum. Next week a new internship starts for me (Neurology) so I figured that I probably won't have much time in the first week, and that I might as well go on and play the char. Next time I'll wait till you say we are allowed to continue.

My opinion about the sending screwed chars: if I get such a char, I think that especially until hell, I will be able not to die (or die with the same odds as with good character), but I really dislike killing one regular creature in 10 minutes. That would really make the tourney less enjoyable for me.
EDIT: that doesn't mean that I don't want to try some experimental builds. I just don't like chars like barb with 20 skill points in Find potion at lvl 20...

I totally agree with you! I have build a decent character just like I would do when I wouldn't send him on. And I think that the one above me on the list has also done that, according to the second character I am going to play.

Same here... I didn't choose the most obvious build on the planet, but it's definitely playable through the whole game (assuming people stick to what I've selected... who knows what others may choose).

If anyone gets an ETHEREAL item in their stash, please let me know. You aren't supposed to have any. Especially not ethereal BROKEN boots like the ones I sent Freekje  (I'd love to know who the wise guy was who sent those in their ante-up stash...).
LMAO. Nice boots! Good for one gold piece from Charsi!
I'm innocent regarding the boots, but I did send you several ethereal items.
Possible wands/staves/gloves with charges (therefore, the charges are limited). And some plain/socketed stuff suitable for merc imbues/runewords. Probably less than 10 items total.

I'll admit I went for the nearly complete screwage package on my first character. I could have made him worse however since there are a few useful skills on him and viable build options still available, but also a lot wasted points as well. I think the first 2-3 acts are really where you have a ton of room to make broken characters since they aren't difficult and your merc can do most all of the killing for you if you wanted. You also have the most influence over their development since they level up much more often in the early goings. And even better is the fact that they are the least likely characters for you to ever see again in the tourney (especially if they're terrible). Why not start them off with a bang? I'll start playing much more nicely if I get into NM where my lack of HC experience will definitely show up.

Then I'll admit that I hope you die before you can mess more chars up
(don't take it too serious or personal, actually I even like a challenge)

I agree Freekje. I considered it for about 1/4 of a second and discounted it. I hate playing waste characters and wouldn't wish it on anyone else, I'd rather pit my skills against theirs fairly.

EJB is currently after me and got the start of a very nice Pally, and will keep getting good characters, or as best as I can revive them if I get crap.

Butz. :dunce:

Sent my character on to Ohomemgrande, please let me know when it arrives.

I also don't really agree with sending on screwed up characters, its a friendly tournament and I would rather be playing fun characters than just playing them labouriously through just to get through to the next act.

I hope everyone that tries to mess up their characters gets deeds in the process :wink3:

Okay, I can anticipate wanting this week to end as I started and finished my Act I today at work. What will I do tomorrow?

Enter another tournament of course! I am currently working on my seventh attempt at my own "Diablo Players Thespian Troupe" tournament. It takes only a few hours to play an act in this tournament, so I have a lot of time to spend on the other one too.

Kenyon is stripped and broke. So I sent her on to PurpleLocust. I simply got tired of doing Countess runs (although I only did 21 of them). Besides, if we all send our characters on early, maybe we can start Act 2 early!!

Here are my rune results:
El 6
Eld 12
Tir 4
Nef 6
Eth 5
Ith 3
Tal 2
Ral 1

My original target was to get enough Ral's to cube an Ort early in Act 2 and make an Ancient's Pledge. What the heck, maybe I can find that Ort in the desert. I'd rather try that than keep harvesting all those Eld's.

Let me clarify, I never meant 20 pts in find potion.

I am talking not setting up a perfectly synergized meteorb sorc or some such. Possible yes, easy no. I still don't think easy chars are the way to go.

I put points in stuff that works, but isn't the easiest.

I just don't think setting up the strongest builds will show skill vs. skill. It would be, who happens to get that awesome hammerdin with unresistable damage in Hell Act V.

Hmm I seem to have become the evil villain of the tournament  .

I guess coming into this I interpreted the idea to be like a game of chicken. Do you make the character you have to take through a given act more viable so that you can get through it, or do you make them less viable risking a greater chance of death. I figured if you wanted to go decent build vs. decent build there are lots of other tourneys that let you do such a thing. But this tourney gives you lots of options. You could make a character build that you are familiar with, but requires some kind of finesse to play, or perhaps you have a particular item in your stash that you know is almost required to make a certain build viable and others are not likely to have. Another option is to go with an utter disaster that is just waiting to die and see who can pass on the hot potato without getting burnt. I thought a lot of people would go for the latter route, and I was actually looking forward to receiving a Necro with Max Terror and base Vit in the next changeover to see if I'd have the guts to keep making him harder to play, or if I'd give in and throw some points into Raise Skeleton to make my safety net a little bigger.

I suppose I'll have to ponder a bit about what my strategy will be in the next round  . Frost is definitely a goner, unless someone has the skills :brainiac: to turn him around. But for the next round I'm not sure. Will I play nice or build a Weakenmancer :fortuneteller: I suppose it's hard to mess up a necro anyway, he's got too many options.
