"You Learn Something New Everyday"

I've seen the green colour persist on a merc for a lot longer than it should. Perhaps you have seen this too and assumed your merc to be poisoned.

Shortly after the screenshot I posted, I fed my merc a potion to check for exactly this. I watched his life shoot up to about 350 then fall back down to 0.

Hmm... I just always assumed that mercs will die to poison unless healed but your characters life will stop at 1 hp when poisoned. Crazy.

IIRC it is/was possible for characters to die from the poison Achmel the Cursed inflicts. This would sometimes cause death while baal was like LOL before the 3rd wave.

l've known about the minimap arrow key feature since D1, and the Atma healing pretty recently. Something l think not many people know is you can access the stash with telekinesis. You can also activate and use waypoints with it, and enter town portal while in town.

Here is a proof. The merc is lying on the floor, just below the TP, it was just five mins ago in pharaoh's MP game

Could it be possible that your merc the moment exactly prior to you entering the portal has 0 life causing the death, but because the corpse can't (can it?) be stuck in limbo it appeared in town? :undecided:

I suppose it's possible, but I brought my merc back to town with about 50% life and watched it drain away, then fed him a potion to gain back some then watched it drain away again.

On the issue of a merc being in town with 0 HP, poisoned and alive, isn't it possible for the Merc's natural regeneration rate to exactly cancel out the HP drain from poison, leaving it at 0 but not dead?

Then again, how would he get to 0 at the first place if the regen is keeping the poison in limbo? Argh, my head hurts =p

But I can confirm that they can die in town of poison.

(this is getting a little off-topic, but I had an idea for an amusing screenshot involving this. 8 player game, one person hasn't done the save the barbarian quest. The other 7 have, and hire a barb merc each, who they bring to town poisoned and let them die at Qual-Kehk's feet. Player finishes the quest, and gets the 'thank you for saving my men' speech. Uh, Qual-kehk? They're dead =p)

Teeheee....I got a giggle out of that. Yes, that would be a very cool ss!

I just found out the other week that you can control + click to put potions directly from your inventory to your belt. Oh the time that would have saved if I had known that earlier

IIRC you can ctrl+right click from your belt to give the potion to your merc or you can shift+left click from your inventory to put the pot in the belt...

You can also shift+right click the potions in the vendor screen and they will fill up your belt. Not something that I learned today, but relevant to the previous posts I feel.

No, he had some life left. he stayed alive in town for a couple secs before dying.

I was thinking about starting a new post to discuss this, but was afraid it might be widely known and I'd be ridiculed, so this seems a good opportunity to bring it up.

I just realized that ethereal weapons and armor have a strength requirement 10 less than their non-ethereal counterparts. The same applies to always-ethereal uniques (ie. Ethereal Edge has str req 156, while normal Silver-Edged Axes are 166).
Note: I play 1.10, so I don't know if this applies to other versions, though it does apply to 1.09-found ethereal items I have on 1.10 characters.

I discovered this when running Meph with my Blizz sorc, wearing an ethereal Skulder's Ire. Meph dropped a gold Russet Plate, and when ID'ed it had a red background. I knew she was wearing a Skulder's so I couln't figure out why she couldn't wear the new one that dropped - until I checked the str req of both armors! The eth one has a str req of 87, normal is 97, and my sorc has 88 str.

Same goes for dex requirement, so you'll be saving 20 stat points in many cases.

EDIT: Some of you have the keyboard shortcuts wrong.

Pot to merc: SHIFT + (whatever hotkey you have your pot at, default 1234) <-- Doesn't work in 1.07
Fast sell at vendor: CTRL + Left Click
Fast put pot to belt: SHIFT + Left Click (don't do this one wrong, CTRL will sell it, and right clicking will drink it...)
Fill belt with pots at vendor: SHIFT + Right Click at vendor's pot. (For health and mana potions, this will fill whole belt with potions, except the rows that have something else in the first row. Also works with scrolls, but scrolls will only fill it's tome, and a belt row that starts with that kind of scroll)

I assume everyone knows that you can customise just about any key to do anything in the later patches.

Did you know that Cain has something to say (doesn't he always?) when you rescue him and click on him while still in Tristram? Clicky

Found this out a few weeks ago after playing this game for a few years.

I never knew that! All this time, I thought he was an ungrateful bugger, legging it out of Tristram and not even leaving his portal for me to use. I guess I've misjudged him ...

... nah, I can't stand his voice, to Hell with him.
