@ Kanon - this is a five button mouse, and the thing with the keyboard is because I have two full desktops set up side by side. At the moment I have to move one keyboard back on the shelf (effectively making it unreachable) when I use the second one. I cannot move the keyboard up where I could use it because the cord isn't long enough.

It's all about individual's setup.

Unless there's a specific reason for using 2 keyboards, you might want to install a basic USB/PS2 switcher (~$15-$30), and be rid of one keyboard/mouse set. I mentioned a KVM switch box earlier but that would be overkill if you prefer using both monitors. Basic peripheral-switching is less expensive than KVM.

synergy, my friend, synergy.

It's open-source, freeware, and the ability to copy/paste between computers is so useful that I'd even pay for this functionality on its own.

setpoint is actually pretty decent these days, I have a logitech G5 mouse and setpoint software adds a lot of customisation, specifically macros for the two thumb buttons and changing the DPI settings.

Setpoint is useful with certain advanced mouses, like the MX rev. You can't set all the buttons without it.

I have a logitech mx 310 and it's got 6 buttons, they work, but I don't use them all, I got it for the egronomics. (I need long right and left click buttons) This one's not wireless, but they had a wireless version for about $15 more.
