When do Ethereal items lose durability

I have an ethereal string of ears and was wondering how fast it will lose durability. In general, when and how fast do the various pieces of armor and weapons lose their durability?

It depends on how long it takes for the durability to go down to zero.

If your'e in combat more, it will happen faster, spend less time fighting, and it happens slower.

If I remember right, everytime you take a hit there is a chance of durability going down.

That's melee hits btw. Ranged attacks don't cause durability loss.

When you're hit every piece of armor has a chance to roll for a chance to lose durability. Belts have a lower chance than body armor I know.
Eth string has what, 12 or 6 durability? It wouldn't last 20 baal runs on a melee char.

If I remember correctly, when your hit you have a 1 in 3 chance of losing durability, and the body armor and the helm are more likely to lose durability then the belt, afterwhich gloves and boots have the lowest chance.
1) attaking
Each time who hit a target, there is a 4% probability that the weapon you used loose 1 dur. (note : Smite was bugged in 1.09, weapon did loos dur instead of shield. Seems to be corrected in 1.10).

2) Defending
When you're hit, the game picks a random a location with following weights :
helm = 3, torso = 2, right hand = 2, left hand = 2, belt = 4, boots = 4, gloves = 3
(and usual prob = weight/(sum of weight) ).
Empty location is ignored, indestructible items too.
This location has 10% chance of loose 1 dur.

No dur loss when you block.
No dur loss when you are hit by missiles.
I forgot whose quote this is though.

So, assuming I'm reading this correctly, that's saying the torso armor has a less chance of losing durability than the gloves, boots or belt (torso: 2/20 = 0.1, boots: 4/20 = 0.2.)? This doesn't sound right?

Also, right hand/left hand? I thought the shield only lost durability when it was blocking, and weapons lost durability when they are attacking.

Does that mean nothing happens if the blow "lands" there, or does it mean it can't "land" there?

If it means the latter then if all but one of your items was indestructible, it would get broken really fast.

I remember now, the data's from Myrdinn and it's 1.10. It seems strange, so it's much more likely that the the equipment slots with 2 and 4 need to be switched.

Same here, but that doesn't seem to be the cause for shields, but I doubt weapons lose durabilty when getting hit.

Merick: It can't land there.

Well, peeps use eth Hoto's and eth Sorc's Weapons they don't use any durability if they don't melee strike an enemy with it. But I would assume that an Assassin's weapons would lose durability if you block with them?

Yes. If I remember correctly, blocking through weapon block will reduce the weapons durability. That said, I do not know if blocking a spell (such as fireball) will reduce it's durability. I do not think so.
