What the heck does pwn'd mean anyways?

Alright,
I've been playing Diablo 2 for a while mostly alone or occasionally with my wife. I was just getting used to the kid's street lingo when I came across this OMG I PWN'D YOU! What in the world does that mean anyways?

Kind of like..hmm..basically they are saying that they are way way better than you.

Ugh, 'pwn' is so incredibly stupid. I would rather someone say 'newb' than that other one. I feel my IQ lower a point or two whenever someone types it, and drops by the score whenever someone actually says it. I can't afford to lose any more brain power than D2 has already stolen from me...

The best way to counter attack a pwn-fueled person are waffles.
Example;
"LOL OMG I PWN'T YOU!"-some guy
"waffles"-you
the guy will be thown off guard and be unable to answer back,completely destroyed by your superiority.

The "P" is next to the "O" (on a qwerty keyboard anyway) - it's a stupid and yet funny typo that simply caught on as web lingo. Nothing terribly fascinating.
