what is a vanilla player?

ok i have been reading the forums and seeing this come up a lot so i did a seach and the whole first page is full of topics from today and im not seeing where anyone states what a vanilla player is and what are the rules,

thanks

The difference between a vanilla player and others is that vanilla players do not use any mods. THey just play the way the game was created and made. You can use patches, but not other mods, like the RRM or the RWM.

A vanilla player is one who does not use the red rune mod/rune word mod, those being the only two mods that have a level of acceptance here.

The red rune mod makes all runes appear in red text, making them easier to spot in a large drop, while the rune word mod enables the rune words available on the server in SP. People involved in trading/MP like to know what, if any, mods the other person uses. Thus we have people describing themselves as vanilla, RRM, RWM or RRM/RWM.

ok so sence i don't use any mods from now on when i play a MP game or post something up in the mp forum in the stick i should mention im vanilla?
also i was reading a thread about being tainted, if i play a MP game with someone who uses them then that would taint a vinilla player right? is there a way to tell if you or someone else is or has been tainted?

thanks

Basically, if you MP or trade with someone that uses one of the mods, you become 'tainted' in the eyes of the forum, and are no longer vanilla. So, if you value 'vanilla' status you will not MP/trade with those people, if not, you won't care (But if you are 'tainted' you should state so)

well i havn't ever played MP in SP until yesterday when and i have the guys name writen down at home i made a host game and played a bit though NM i will send him a PM tonight and ask but i myself don't have any mods or anything like that

As I understand the concept, "taint" would result from the above, yes. It would apply to all your finds from that MP game, and would be carried forward if you used items from that game to go on and find more, etc. There is no easy way to determine if you have been tainted, or if someone else has been, without paying a lot of attention to behaviour and posts. This is why this community is very big on people being honest and upfront about what they are doing on their computer - it prevents someone from discovering they have been "tainted" from a trade months after the fact.

Whats wrong with being "tainted"? Do you have to give up an arm of a leg to get rid of taint? If so I'll give you wirts leg XD

Taint affects your ability to engage in trade with others, which for some people is a very important consideration.

No there is nothing wrong with being tainted. It just means that you have items that were generated or traded with other tainted people. Some players like to play vanilla and in order to keep doing so, they do not want to trade with tainted people. They want to keep their games "pure"(I guess).

Edit: Sorry, I messed this up. Double post

But some people get the idea that being tainted greatly restricts the availability of trading partners for some reason.

The truth is, it's generally easier to find a tainted trading partner than a Vanila partner, and you'll usually make better gains in trades as well.

One of the reasons why RWM (Rune Word Mod) is so popular is because, as of recently, this is part of the game. Blizz just added special code to block it from SP players, most likely for marketing/business reasons.

Nobody here thinks that Blizz's business practices should affect how we play the game and so the RWM gained acceptance. Some happily play RWM without a worry, some grumble about blizz and play RWM, some grumble about blizz and don't play RWM and some happily play vanilla, exactly the way blizz handed it to us SP'er.

There is far more "tainted" MP games, (lets call them RRM/RWM) and more active "tainted" players for trading so + 1 to taint the forum heh:badteeth:
