.d2x is an ATMA stash file--you have to use ATMA to open it.
.d2s is a Diablo character file. That's what you open when you load your character in the game. Since ATMA is only for PCs, Mac users (like myself) must receive items in .d2s files.

unless you run vpc. =) i run vpc exclusively for use with atma. that's how i've been running my giveaway.

Oh good--someone that knows! I'm hoping to get VPC when they update it for the G5. How do you do ATMA with it? Copy the character files onto the VPC partition? Somehow set permissions so that VPC can access the OSX files directly?

in essence the vpc machine thinks it's a seperate machine on a network between it and your mac. the vpc software allows you to setup a share within the vpc software for whatever mac drives/folders you want. in my case, i shared the diabloii save folder as the z: drive. so, all atma sees on my mac is that folder. works out really well. if you have any further questions, shoot me a pm as to not clog up this thread.
