want to get back into D2, question on account expiration

I saw that Blizzard just started this "merge all of your games into one battle.net account" concept. I've lost my old cds/keys so I am considering buying a new copy of the game through the download option in the Blizzard store. Before I did this though, I was wondering if Blizzard ever changed their account expiration policy for battle.net accounts. I always hated the fact that if I went inactive for 3 months, my account would be expired and my characters would be gone. Is this still the policy?

I'm not sure, but I think that expired accounts and expired characters are gone only if someone else recreated them (used the same name) after the expiration. So there might be chance your account and your characters are still available.

Characters don't expire, unless what Marapper said happens: when somebody else creates that charactername on that realm if yours is expired. Accounts still do get deleted and expired afaik. Iirc the timer was set to around 90 days for that.

Ahhh that's too bad. I don't see a point in playing on b.net again if my characters will just get deleted when I take a few months off like I always do. I don't understand why it is so hard for them to simply save accounts... They should really take the opportunity with 1.13 to actually save accounts indefinitely and have people use their unified b.net login account. Does anybody know of any programs out there that will automatically log your account in just to keep it active?

any program like that would probably steal items from your accts

best to skip that idea and run d2 every few months to refresh your accts
chars only expire if someone else creates a char with the same name on that realm
the expire date opens up the name for others to use

Or befriend with somebody here and ask if they want to keep your accounts active. I know a couple of people who do that on Europe. It's 10 minutes work (with 1 or 2 accounts).

I really appreciate the responses!! I'll have to get into the habit of loggin' into my D2 accounts at least once a month. Maybe I can stick with it... Let's hope that "permanent Diablo 2 b.net accounts" is a new 1.13 feature!! We can hope, can't we?? :)

I can concur that your accounts are deleted. Stopped playing for about 6 months, checked last week to start playing and everything is gone. Big disappointment, had 8 fully decked characters and two very good mule accounts wiped out.

Now just waiting for the ladder reset.
