Howdy folks, I´m happy to see that you miss Gabrielle!

I have been using most of my free time playing in the HC Tankazon tournament, so the writing is lagging behind. I don´t think I will write more this week either, so I´ll give you what I have so far. Sorry for the abrupt ending.

Hestian Virgin Priestess Leah (dressed in robe): "Oh, very well, I will play the part of the wetched lush, Meg, but I hardly think anyone will be fooled."

G: "Yes, they will." (Disrobes L, then adjusts her outfit)

Leah (dressed as Meg): "You really are a very nice, albeit misguided-- young person, Gabrielle. It's a great pity I didn't get 'hold of you sooner. You would've made an excellent Hestian."

G: "Thanks. I don't think so."

Leah: "Well, the chaste life's not so bad. Once you get used to it. You simply have to follow the Hestian rules. Rule 1-- know thyself. Rule 2-- whatever-- "

G (interrupting): "Believe me. If I have to go the rest of my life without companionship, knowing myself won't be a problem.

It was important to plan the sessions well in act 5. The ice caves are very dangerous to run through without killing anything and I would hate having to establish a foothold there more than once. I felt that I needed to have plenty of space to fight Eldritch´s pack. The Frigid Highlands waypoint is always at the very start of the area, thus it is not practical to end a session after the Highlands.

All this led to that I delayed the playing until I had a whole day for it. The plan was to play all the way to the entrance to Crystalline Passage in one session. I decided to leave the two RoF bonus areas last, as they can be played later if needed.

Bloody Foothills held Slingers and the Enslaved/Overseer combinations. I had no problems with them. Just be careful and lure back a couple of Slingers at the time. Those annoying barbarians made it so I missed out a lot of XP (they created a lot of exploding Enslaved). There is a bug with those Slingers in act 5. They often can´t hit minions and here they couldn´t hit the barbarians. Since Gabrielle advances so slowly, she only caught sight of a single barbarian during the whole area. There were plenty of signs of them though: Slingers throwing javelins in weird directions, dead barbarians and also dead monsters. I even found a typical boss drop just lying on the ground. The barbs had killed a boss Slinger by themselves!

Surprisingly, Shenk was a pushover. Eldritch´s pack was CE and they were annoying to fight. I lured Eldritch to Shenk´s platform and killed him with harpoons.

Frigid Highlands: more Slingers, imps and imp/Crush Beast combinations. Gabrielle loves imps! Very low danger level and they die quickly. It´s quite easy to separate the imps from the Beast. The beast has a much bigger “awareness†range so if I encountered a combination, I backed off so the imp jumped off and the beast came running.

An imp boss dropped a very interesting item: a Walking Stick! I almost trembled when I identified it. Crap, the only fighter-friendly abilities were 1-91 lightning damage and 9% life steal. Still, it is a better weapon than the Demon Spell against highly lightning resistant critters. Slightly slower, but it does much more physical damage (about the same against undead). The life steal does not help much, though. Gabrielle has to hit the enemy, like, 10 times in a row to make up for the life loss of a regular hit. She may be able to save a few healing potins but the danger level won´t go down. The staff has +1 sorcie skills and also some plusses to individual skills. Repair cost is a ridulous 62000+ (the Arcing Jo Staff has about 8000). I was actually thinking of using Larzuk´s reward on it, because if I did, I could have rerolled it with regular gems (making it magical), then with flawless ones and finally even craft it if I wanted to.

Arreat Plateau provided even more imps and also Fire Boars. Without their lashers masters. What a lucky enemy draw! The Fire Boars seemed to be even less lightning resistant than the Enslaved. I avoided meleeing Thresh Socket, for obvious reasons.

The two bonus areas also had easy enemies. Succubi, skellie mages, Balrogs and greater mummies. The layout of the areas is well suited to fight only one meleer at a time. Just take it slow and all will be alright.

Thus ended the session. I was very pleased with it. No danger at all.

Crystalline Passage next. Needless to say, I took it very slowly in the beginning. I was afraid to get caught in a boss pack fight without any safe area to run to. One small step, wait, cast Slow Missiles, another step, etc. I think I spent more than three minutes down there (and managed to secure a nice bit of ground) before seeing the first enemies: Vipers. Not that bad, actually. The Walking Stick was pretty effective against them. There were also Death Brigadiers and cold-using Bone Mages in the Passage. Overall, another good draw. However, there was a CE Stone Skin Viper boss that was immune to physical. Combine that with good lightning resistance and you get an enemy that is very hard for Gabrielle to kill. When slowed, she couldn´t hit often enough with her Arcing staff to overcome its life regeneration. She had to resort to some Buzzing Trowing Spears she bought just for this fight. It took several repair trips and lots of running to kill the boss with those.

I avoided the Evil Urns and the Frozen River for now. I wanted to secure the important Frozen Tundra waypoint first. So it was the same cautious start on the Glacial Trail. More Vipers, more cold mages and now succubi. No real problems in that area either. There were another couple of Evil Urns to save for later. I entered the Frozen Tundra.

to be continued...

but where is the rest of the story ?

Wow, a 3-year bump! Time flies...

Gabrielle's adventures did continue. I remember hearing about it a while back. Sorry, no spoilers, it's not for me to say. :lipsrsealed: I'm surprised it's not written up here, but then again jiansonz is known for l--o--n--g breaks between wacky character updates.
I'm sure he'll see this, and maybe we'll see an update.

edit: I'm pretty sure that's Gabrielle in his avatar.

my interest is peaked. i really enjoyed reading this thread during breaks in between work. its amazing how dedicated some people are to thier wacky characters. much respect. any chance for an update jiansonz?

OK, I don´t remember that much, but I´ll share what I do remember:

Frozen Tundra, Infernal Pit, Ancients´Way and Ice Cellar were all major struggles, but Gabrielle cleared them out. I do not remember any details.

Gabrielle prepared the Arreat Summit with LOADS of javelins. I think there were at least 40 of them. She purchased any decent javelins Malah would offer her.

The first 20 minutes of the fight consisted of Gabby running like mad and throwing javelins, mostly at Madawc. The used up packs would get dumped on another part of the Summit so she wouldn´t confuse them with the full packs.

Unfortunately, she hadn´t gotten through half the pile before they all vanished! Stupid game engine...
But Madawc was now almost dead and some quick attack-then-run actions brought him down.

Korlic was Extra Fast, and that was actually great.
"Say what?"

It provided a chance for Gabrielle to separate Korlic from Talic. After a few tries, her extremely high FRW made Talic lose sight of her, while Korlic followed. Taking him down with the Strength staff was relatively quick, but painful.

Low on potions, and with the Strength staff about to break, Gabrielle cautiously went looking for Talic. She had trouble finding a comfortable fighting situation. Those whirls were just too painful, and her potion supply diminished. I decided to make a stand in the top-right corner. If you place yourself and Talic there, there is sometimes too little space for him to whirl. He won´t even try. On the other hand, you may end up getting trapped in that corner as well. Just ask Sten the S/U Worshipper Barb (although Talic had no chance agianst him :azn: ).

With 2 or 3 full rejuves left, the CB staff broke. Sigh. Why didn´t I just repair it before the fight? Idiot!

Talic down to less than half life, and now the Arcing staff was also very low on durability...

Eventually, all my potions were gone, but I had not given up yet. Gabrielle´s extreme foot speed made it possible to park Talic on the other side of the summit, if I was lucky. I had brought a life replenishing amulet, so whenever Gabby got hurt, I would make Talic lose sight of her, then wait a couple of minutes to regain her ~700 life. I was actually reading a book during these recoveries...

2 durability left on the Arcing staff. Well, if it breaks, she will just have to continue the fight with her fists, dammit! (Actually, that could still work. She has some slight CB on the gloves and some slight OW on the belt...)

But, I screwed up on one retreat and Talic whirled in that direction. Try to imagine how scary that is when you have no shield and no potions!!

To my surprise, Gabrielle actually survived those whirls. I saw no red in the life bulb! She suffered massive hit recovery, and that made me fumble with her next attempt at retreating. It would have needed to be ordered at the exact correct moment. It wasn´t, and Talic whirled in the dircetion she was fleeing, and that was the end of Gabrielle´s quest.

- If only I had brought a few more healing potions (even at the expense of some resists charms).
- If only I had repaired the Strength staff before the fight!
- If only...

Gabrielle is in my top 3 of characters that I have been attached to. Very often extremely frustrating to play, but all the more sweet when she made progress against all odds. She didn´t even make it to Hell, but I will always remember her.

Sorry to hear about her end. :(

But that was an interesting quest, well done.

I plan to build a "Gabrielle" for me eventually, but not with that many restricions and not on Hardcore. If "Passion" runeword can be made on Staves (I have to confirm this), then it should be a very fun build, a Zeal zon with a staff. :P

That should be possible. Next to a Ribcracker, a 'Passion' Elder Staff or Shillelagh would be the dream weapon. (BTW, the Arreat Summit is wrong, they both have a base speed of 0.)

This was the most amazing and funniest D2 story i've ever read  (alltogether with Insayne Wayne's and superdave's quest) and i want to say thank You jiansonz for sharing this story with us!I know, it was written before three Years, but for me it have still great educational value  I bow to Your patience and game knowledge...

jiansonz - thanks for posting that update, gabrielle's deeds will be remembered. undoubtedly one of the best character ideas, and stories i have read as a member of these forums. i loved the scenes, strategy, as well as the gabrielle restrictions created from her character type. your skillz are l33t.

Ooh, sorry to hear of Gabrielle's demise. Considering her restrictions she went very far. I had wondered about her status, so I'm glad you posted the update.

Re: Wacky project: Gabrielle´s quest

Just read this for the first time and I think it is worth necro'ing for some newcomers and oldtimers alike to read the story, awesome character :D

Thanks. What a great read that was !

G.R.D. (Are other of these projects ongoing still ? Do you (jiansonz) still play ? Can I find all your themed threads easily ?)

Re: Wacky project: Gabrielle´s quest

There are some pretty restricted tournament characters being played in threads in the Single Player Forum that you could browse and jiansonz is active in those.

Re: Wacky project: Gabrielle´s quest

I have been toying with the idea of trying a v1.13 RWM Gabby (with ATMA stash allowed). 'Insight' would be a nice weapon to make, with about the same damage bonus as 'Passion' but uses much easier-to-find runes.

@GoldenredDragon: I have not made all that many themed characters and my other best achievement (difficulty- and writing-wise), Mike the v1.09 Mojomancer and Isolde the Fire Rogue was eaten by the Great Forum Crash in 2003.

I pretty much play only tournament characters nowadays. I have so many at various stages of semi-retirement and in limbo (due to burnout, boredom, build ADHD, my love of the early game, new interesting tourneys, etc) that I could play them for years to come, just completeing my existing characters.
