Upgrade runes, or not?

Upgrade runes, or not?

Should I use the cube recipe to up my Pul runes to Um, or keep thm at Pul? I see that, supposedly, one HR can be bought for Ist Mal, but it takes 2 Ist to upgrade to Vex. This would suggest that I should leave them low. Also, supposedly 6 pul = 1 HR. 6 Pul can upgrade to Mal Um only. It's all fracking confusing...

How likely is it that I could actually get one HR for 6 Pul?

USWest, BTW...

Re: Upgrade runes, or not?

you can upgrade your 2 Puls to Um if you want to, since:

value of Um = Pul + Pul

however, it is less worthwhile to upgrade further

value of Mal = Pul + Pul + Pul
value of Ist = Pul + Pul + Pul + Pul + Pul

you can get one hr from 6 puls by trading here.

EDIT: opps, all these values are of US East, not sure if it differs from US West.

Basically trading instead of upgrading is better for game economy I think. Because if you upgrade, you will destroy those lower runes in the process.

Re: Upgrade runes, or not?

its not a direct 2:1 trading value all the way from pul to ist because mal is an undervalued rune...its not generally traded at a 2-Um value, so you lose value when you upgrade Ums in the cube. Pul to Um holds its value, but since you can get an Ist for 2 or 3 Ums (basically skipping the Mal intermediary step) it doesnt make sense to cube Ums.

Mal isnt used in any very popular runewords, and it doesnt have value to socket like Ist does for MF or Um for resists, and you dont use them to up items like Pul. Countess can drop Mal, unlike Vex and up, so its much more common than HRs.
