Types of builds

So I haven't played this game in like 6 or 7 years... I think the .08 patch was the last one I played. Needless to say, a lot has changed. I've been reading about a lot of different paladin builds, trying to decide which one to pick.

In your opinion, what's the best build and why? Hammerdin? Zealot? Smiter? FoH? Something else? I was considering a Frost Zealot b/c I like melee fighting. Nothing like mowing through a cluster of enemies w/o having to think about anything.

There's so many intricate build guides out there, I don't know which to pick. Is it mostly based on you playing style/what you prefer? Or are some truly superior to others?

Thanks for you thoughts.

Re: Types of builds

Depends what you want to do. Casters are better at MFing. But for playing through the game, just pick a playstyle you enjoy.

For mowing through a cluster of enemies w/o having to think, you're looking at some type of Zealot build with decent physical damage in order to leech life. Fanatic Zealot or Frost Zealot are probably your best bets untwink.

Re: Types of builds

The Hammerdin is popular due to his potential for very high damage and lack of resistant monsters (since it ignores magic resistance of demons/undeads, only the Wailing Beasts in the act 3 temples in Hell are immune), which allows you to carry a decent amount of MF and still be a killing machine. Still it takes a very particular playstyle and not everyone likes the way hammers are cast and get the knack of aiming them, so if you think you're feeling more like melee go for it!

From the zealots I'd suggest one of the elemental variants (Holy Shock or Holy Freeze, or both), since their damage is good enough without having an elite weapon, they're more suited for untwinked play than pure Fanatic Zealots I think.

Re: Types of builds

Thanks for the quick response guys. I'm a hack-and-slash guy at heart so I think I'll go w/ a Holy Freeze Zealot.

Ragnarod, it was your Hammerdin guide that made me second-guess, seems like a super-powerful char but like you said I don't know if I have the patience to master the aiming, and I won't be using him for MF since I already have a sorc w/ all the gear.

Anywyas, thanks again for the advice

Re: Types of builds

To be honest with you my guide is outdated, the section about strategies still applies but aiming is much less critical once you get an Enigma, then you can just teleport on top of the monster you want to kill and cast away (not as interesting a way to play imo, but quite effective). Then again, if you're playing untwinked and are more the melee type you won't be disappointed with Holy Freeze, good luck! :)
