Subject: Hacking on US East Hardcore Ladder

Dear Blizzard, Inc.

I am writing to you today to respectfully request that you take action to
remedy a situation that is causing the quality of your Diablo 2 servers to
deteriorate and cause a game play environment that is unfair and lacking the
quality which you claim to provide to the consumers of your product.

As you are probably aware, through the Battle.net forums and other Diablo 2
related forums as well as your tech support and abuse reporting devices,
TPPK scripts, bots, Maphack, duping schemes and other third-party programs
have become ubiquitous in use on all of the Diablo 2 realms. This has caused
an unfair advantage to the users of those hacks, most especially in the
current ladder race to which a prize has been made available by your
company.

This message is a result of legitimate users of your products frustration at
the perceived lack of action towards those who would undermine the quality
of your products, services and the quality of the gaming experience you are
providing. Many of us have, at one point in time, taken in-game screen shots
of hack users and cheaters, submitted them to the facilities which you have
provided to address those issues only to see the same accounts and
characters continue to plague the legitimate consumers of your products.

We challenge you to step up to the plate and address the rampant hacking
issues that have become endemic on your Diablo 2 realms. We who have
demonstrated our support and commitment to your products are counting on you
to pull through to provide a timely solution to this problem.

Sincerely,

Phil Memmer
Diablo II player since the day of its release.

I think I will focuse my attention to gaming mags and see what happens but i am not letting up.

Please take a look at http://www.blizzard.com/support/ for the latest
support news and
http://www.battle.net/forums/board.aspx?ForumName=battlenet-status for
updated information on Battle.net.

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions:

Q: If I (or someone I know) use a hack (map hack, skill hack, etc.) will my
account get deleted/banned/muted?
A: In keeping with our aggressive stance against hacks and cheats, we have
deleted accounts that were caught using hacks including but not limited to
map hacks, duping hacks and server-crashing or game-terminating hacks.

Please note, however, that for Diablo II if you do anything that is unusual
(such as getting disconnected while in a trade screen on Battle.net),
Battle.net will stop you from joining non-passworded games. This is usually
a temporary problem and you should be able to join games again in the next
day or two.

We will continue to monitor the Battle.net Realms for malicious players. Be
aware that if you are caught using a hack, we will take action against the
account(s) up to and including having the account permanently banned and
possibly even your CD-Key from accessing Battle.net. We regret having to
employ these extreme measures, however, certain unscrupulous players have
impaired the gameplay of the Battle.net community as a whole, and severe
action is now both warranted and required. We appreciate your understanding
and cooperation in this matter.

Please note that these actions are final and will not be reversed under any
circumstance. Period.

Q: Is it OK to use the (map, skill, grab, etc.) hack as I think it is
useful and/or doesn't hurt anyone or the game?
A: See above.

Q: I just reported someone for using a hack/duping/trying to scam people;
will you actually take any action against them?
A: We truly appreciate you alerting us to behavior that might negatively
impact Battle.net's online gaming community. We will take appropriate steps
to notify the offender of the parameters set forth in the Battle.net terms
of use agreement as well as the consequences for not following the posted
rules. While it is our preference not to ban players from Battle.net, we
will not hesitate to do so in the event that players persistently violate
the Battle.net Terms of Use agreement.

Q: How can I protect my computer/battle.net account from hackers?
A: For information about protecting your computer against hackers please
take a look at: http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=msi0504p

Q: Can you send me any hacks, cheats, trainers? Can you teach me to hack?
A: Blizzard Entertainment does not distribute hacks or information on their
locations. We also will not teach you how to hack.

Q: Are all methods of duping stopped?
A: All known methods of duping have been fixed. We will continue to monitor
the Diablo II realms for duplication exploits and fix them as needed.

Q: Why have some of my items of a certain type vanished?
A: The Realm scans for duplicated items and may delete any duplicates that
it finds. You might have traded for a duplicated item and it may have been
deleted by our servers.

Q: What items were selected for deletion?
A: All rare and unique items were scanned for duplicates.

Q: Why did Blizzard Entertainment only delete some of the dupes, and not
every dupe?
A: Blizzard Entertainment wants to maintain an enjoyable and balanced play
experience for every user. To that end, we removed all but one duplicate
item. We're making an effort to protect those players that legitimately
traded for those items.

Q: If I gamble for two unique items of the same type (e.g. two Stones of
Jordan) or find them by killing monsters, will they be considered dupes and
deleted?
A: No. Items legitimately gained through gambling or dropped by monsters
are not duplicates, even if they have the same name.

Q: If I trade for an item, and already have one of the same type (e.g. I
have a Stone of Jordan, and trade for another one from a player), will one
of them be deleted?
A: If the items are dupes, then one of them will be deleted. If you
already have a certain item, then in order to prevent deletion it is
suggested you not trade for a copy of that item.

Q: Is there anyway to tell if an item is a dupe?
A: No, there is no way to tell if an item is a dupe or not, however there
is one exception. One of the last duping exploits put a socket on the item
and/or personalized the item. You may want to exercise caution if the item
is personalized or socketed.

Q: Can you replace/restore my lost/stolen items?
A: We are very sorry to hear that you are missing or have lost your items.
Unfortunately, we cannot restore any items, no matter the cause. We are
sorry for any inconveniences that this has caused you, but the only way to
replace them is to find or trade for new ones.

Although unexplained lost items can often be attributed to the following
reasons:

- If you die again before you pick up your corpse all the equipment that you
have on your second body will fall to the ground.
- Use of a 3rd-party program, such as a trainer, cheat, or hack, could
install a type of back door or Trojan virus into your system. This can
allow others to be able to steal your items, get your account password
and/or other important information for your system.
- The Realm scans for duplicated items and may delete any duplicates that it
finds.

we do look into reports of players losing items mysteriously. Although we
cannot restore lost items, if you do not feel that your loss of items was
due to the reasons above then please send an email to [email protected]
with the subject line "Lost items/ No Corpse" and tell us what happened.
Explain what you lost, and what happened leading up to the time that you
found the items gone. Also include your account name, character name, which
realm you were on, and approximately what time and date the items
disappeared.

Q: Where can I report hacks or exploits?
A: You can send your reports to [email protected]. Please send your email
formatted as noted below making sure to describe the problem in the body of
the email and include any screen shots, replays, hacks, or other files as
needed. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Put the following information in the subject line of the email in this
Format:
[Account Name] or [Site Address] [Game Name] [Problem]
[Realm/Gateway]

Where as:
* [Account Name] and [Realm/Gateway] are used when reporting a user to us
for TOS/EULA violations while playing on Battle.net
* [Site Address] is used when reporting an internet site (web, FTP, IRC,
etc.) that is hosting cheat, crack or hack files for a Blizzard
Entertainment title.
* [Game Name] is the name of the game. Please use one of the following:
StarCraft, Diablo II, Diablo II LOD, Warcraft II, or Warcraft III.
* [Problem] is a one or two word description of the problem. Please use one
of the following: maphack, drop hack, scammer, dupe, duper, or other.

Here are some examples:
* Reporting a Warcraft III maphacker: evil_haxor Warcraft III maphack USWest

* Reporting someone trying to scam Diablo II accounts: evil_haxor Diablo II
scammer uswest
* Reporting a hacksite for warcraft III: www.somehacksite.net Warcraft III
hacksite
* Reporting information about a hack: (telling us how it's done or alerting
us to a new hack) DiabloII new dupe method

Please Note:
* When reporting a hack please give as much information as you have about
it, preferably exact steps so we can reproduce it.
* Warcraft III users be sure to attach your saved replay file.

Okay... I've sent off my 3 to blizzard.com. Also, I've sent an explanation and a copy of the letter to ign.com, ugo.com, gamespy.com, gamespot.com, insidemacgames.com, macgamer.com, ugr.net, gameinformer.com, rpgplanet.com as well as to the admins of purediablo.com.

I've also cross-posted on the battle.net forums. I can just imagine what the replies are gonna be on that forum.

Will be sending one of these to each of the 3 blizzard adresses daily.

Althought im tempted to get one of my mail programs out and send 1 to each, every second.. must refrain from flooding..

We may be a small group here but i get the sense of many e-mails a flaying! As long as we remain "manual" OrpheusPrime I think we can remain out of jail!!! So refrain!!!

Certainly there's nothing legally actionable about filing legitimate customer service complaints / hack reports, no matter how organized the effort is. The bottom line is that oodles of people are abusing the realms, cheating, and otherwise violating Blizz's TOS/EULA, and Blizz's lack of action is having a negative impact on the ability of legitimate players to enjoy the product they purchased.

I wouldn't recommend sending a letter every second, though :) And I agree that we'll probably get far more action if a magazine or high-traffic website picks up on the form letter. There are only a few of us here... given how much junk they must get in the hacks/support/sales mail boxes, I have to think we alone won't make much of a impact. But that doesn't mean it isn't worth trying!

right. im taggin along. i've always been against cheating and botting sobs. I can't do an email bombardment as its near bedtime, but I will and shall email them as often as possible.

Official Blizzard response

I cross-posted the open letter to the Bnet suggestion forum and I actually got a response from a Blizzard employee! :surprise:

This is from one JosephH:

3. Re: Please Address Rampant Hacks & Cheats! | 8/2/2004 9:29:03 PM GMTDT

Blizzard is especially focused on removing hack programs created with cheating in mind. The use of any such program will be detected by the Battle.net staff and may result in the closure of the account tied to the usage of the program, or even the temporary or permanent banning of the CD key tied to that particular account. As part of our strict anti-hacking policy, this is our best way to ensure that play on Battle.net is equal for everyone. There are no exceptions to this policy.

The thread can be found here:

http://www.battle.net/forums/thread.aspx?fn=suggestions&t=89872&p=1#post89872

I'd recommend anyone who's following this to go the thread and state their opinions.

I would go there but without my Keys i cant post and I rarely post when at home it only cuts into my short amount of time to have a life and have fun.

Meanwhile I will do what I can while and work and get paid hansomely for it!!!

BTW, who wants a wife like mine???

She is at home sending e-mails for me from her accts and my personal one at home and she hates the amount of time I play!!! Damn I am lucky!

That sounds very much like a copy pasted generic response. Too bad they don't put their money where their mouths are.

It is totally a canned response but, a response nonetheless. Hopefully the old "squeaky wheel gets the grease" principal will work here.

Gogo Cyr with the emails! You go girl!

Well, i have gotten off 6 volleys of 3 accts here from work today, the Wife is sending some off and I intend to send one more volley in about 25 mins.

I contacted people and asked them to and sent the the message to them to use.

I totally intend to hit them tomorrow just as hard as long as time permits and i will be talking to everybody i know that i didnt contact and getting them to help.

Thank you all for your efforts, at least we will get our CTRL C and CTRL V skills honed very well or somehting might get done but we all know how handy cut and paste are and perfection is always good!!!

My skills are teh l33t.
I sent off about 8 just now, split up between those addresses. I titled mine Hacks, maybe I should try "BLIZZ I WILL PWN YOU!"?

I don't play D2 at all anymore, but I don't think I don't remember what I felt (and somewhat still feel) about cheaters and what I think should be done to their private parts. For what ever it is worth... Just sent them the mail.

Bots aren't causing the lines. It's a WP Crash "dupe". Hasn't been proven to work yet, so the theory is that people are crashing servers for fun.

Phantom- :drink:

omfg, hahahahha, i cant believe theres still people that think that bots dont cause lines, seriouslly i could try to explain you, but i would probably use some offending words, and i dont want to get banned. Anyway just answer me this single question, if bots arent causing lines, then WHY ARE THERE MORE LINES AT 3 AM IN THE MORNING?, yep thats what i though.

Hi Oscar person,

He actaully already qualified that statement somewhere withing the preceeding 4 pages of assorted spam and useful content.

He meant they aren't the ONLY thing causing the lines.
