Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

I've been coming and going from D2 and these forums for about 10 years now, but until a couple days ago, I'd never tried SP hardcore untwinked. This tournament looked like a lot of fun, so I've given it a go.

Rolled up Ned, a Barbarian, who is accompanied by Khaleel, the eastern sorcerer, specializing in cold magic. Ned's reached level 28 and is about to begin exploring the Flayer Jungle. He's been very lucky with stat points–64/53/67/36–but has become too attached to Bash and Find Potion, and seems to mainly be interested in mastering as many different weapon types as possible. Fortunately, he did seem to agree that a point in Battle Orders would be wise.

He's also reaching the limits of his weapons. His pair of vicious and brutal war axes don't do enough damage for players 8, which slows down his item finding, producing a vicious cycle. He found Sander's boots recently though, so that may improve his shopping (it's a long way from the wp to Hratli!).

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

After several playing sessions the Canyon of the Mages and the seven tombs were cleared on p8, it was slow but not really dangerous. Ancient Kaa dropped a nice rare Kris, more on this later. Found my 3rd Artic Binding in Duriels Tomb, haven't found any other item of this set so far. It was nice to find out that if I used Slow Missiles on Scarabs, their lightning bolts would be ultra slow.

The fight with Duriel was on p3, never really dangerous, I swapped out my MF gear and put together the best gear I could for the fight, Cleglaws Pincers for the slow, a magic Circlet for the static lightning damage and 8 dex which brought me to max block with my shield (Mechanic Bone Shield of Deflection + 2 Eld). Only 2 full juvies were needed.

I used the rare kris I mentioned before:

Storm Impaler
Kris
'TalIth'
One-Hand Damage: 6 to 20
Required Level: 17
+4 to Minimum Damage
+9 to Maximum Damage
Cold Resist +7%
+75 poison damage over 5 seconds
Prevent Monster Heal
19% Damage to Demons
+42 to Attack Rating against Demons
Socketed (2: 2 used)

Duriel dropped only one S/U, but an interesting one Treads of Cthon.

Any tips on how to deal with the dolls in ActIII, I would like to keep doing full clears on p8, but with no Mercenary nor Decoy I fear those little critters.

(Mechanic Bone Shield of Deflection + 2 Eld).

Love this! It´s the best possible blocking shield this early.

Any tips on how to deal with the dolls in ActIII, I would like to keep doing full clears on p8, but with no Mercenary nor Decoy I fear those little critters.

Fetish in general:

It´s only the meleers that are dangerous, imo (yeah, and of course use Slow Missiles liberally on the Shamans, otherwise they can also be dangerous).

The meleers can spawn in packs of 8, if you get such a draw. Try to advance very slowly into new territory in an area that has big melee packs. Ideally, you should not wake up more than half of each 8-pack. Have decent speed on the boots. Always have a planned escape route. Melee fetish will only chase you for short bursts, then they have a short time when they run away from you.

Use the log bridges to tank them 1 on 1. Kill them from across river whenever you can.

Bone fetish:

Pack some +life gear.
Do not wake up more than 2-3 at a time, if possible.
If they are just a few, tank them without killing them (have a good shield), then kill them at range when they run away.

BTW, is your DEX 65 yet? Because gambled Throwing Spears (qlvl 29) can be quite buttkicky.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Randi_TrueBlood has completed Normal at level 48. Act 5 at /pl8, Ancients at /pl1, and Baal at /pl3. Cows at /pl3.

This is her stat and skill layout at the end of Normal, while this is a nice double unique drop; the General's is now her main weapon.

No real dangers. Just a long battle. The last three of Baals waves were split up and taken one at a time. Baal wasn't a threat, as the 50% Slows Target bugged him out. The Ancients at /players1 were actually a danger, as Randi has very low hitpoints, and no great attack. She kept away, and let the Shadow hold them off.
Up later: Nightmare!

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

@jiansonz: Yes the shield is really nice, power shopped for it for like half an hour and didn't get anything, then while shopping wands with terror charges I checked the shields and scored it.

Dex is 60 at the moment, my highest stats, followed by energy... but I have Dex Charms so I could boost it to 65.

Thanks for the good advice about dealing with the dolls :)

Advance in ActIII has been smooth, lower hp monster that die fast are nice with multishot, I also switched my 32% MF magic Circlet for a 24% MF rare Circlet with 23-33 fire damage which helps.

Cleared the Swampy Pits (had my doubts before if it was a good idea, but went for it). Dolls weren't that bad, at p8 I can't 1 hit them, so between a wand with terror charges for when I got sorrounded and the knockback of my bow it was ok. I would run from packs to single them out and then snipe them out, knockback pushed them back so no real danger.

Something weird happened, the superchest from the Swampy Pit dropped cracked/damaged/low quality items... only one magic Long Bow... can't recall it happening to me before, kinda frustrating after clearing the whole thing...

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Well Mephisto has fallen and it was done at p8 with moat trick, blame me... (wasn't hard but took forever to chip his health down with MA). Mephisto's drop was crappy, only 1 S/U, Hsarus Belt, come on...

I want a better bow, have found a couple of interesting rares but sold them since I don't want to lose the KB, way too useful for a sumoneless and merceless Amazon.

The journy was really uneventful, clearing the Council wasn't hard, and the levels of Durance of Hate weren't different, 2 doll boss packs on the first level and a boss pack of Dark Lords on the second, which was the hardest fight since the boss was curse, though never really dangerous.

Closest call was in one of the temples, where I got surrounded by dolls at the entrance with the boss and a couple of minions hitting me, switched to shield + wand and terrored them away, shooting arrows at the boss when I could, finally broke free, the rest of the temples weren't really that dangerous.

How could I improve my bow, I'm level 32, would gambling be an alternative? I would need to be superlucky to score a good rare with at least 1 socket for a Nef, I can live without the poison damage from a Tal, but without knockback it would be way too hard.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Gambling is a pretty good option for bows, that has been the best source for my merc so far. You can always hope to get lucky on your Forge drop and craft a pair of KB gloves.

Scoring a good rare bow with sockets is pretty much a pipe dream IMO

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

AvengingAngel full cleared ActIV, started at p8 but lowered the players setting to p5 and then p3, because those Venom Lords took forever to kill, also there were Grotesques in most areas. Still have the same bow from ActII, my damage isn't bad, when I can stand and shoot, but with no tank this is hard.

For Diablo I lowered to p1, which was a nice thing, because even with this setting he took forever to kill and I needed like 4 full juvies. His lightning hose has something like extra range when it ends and a hit from it took 3/4 of my health... Got trapped a couple of times by his prison but a staff with teleport charges helped me out, it also aided me a couple of times I got into a bad position. The drop was decent, no unique, but 3 set items Death's Touch, Sigons Sabot and Hsarus Iron Heel. The sword is useless, but the boots have some potential.

Still in the search for a better bow, got 2 Ort runes from the Act, so Zephyr is an option, what are good bases bows for it? Hellforge dropped an Eld...

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Still in the search for a better bow, got 2 Ort runes from the Act, so Zephyr is an option, what are good bases bows for it?

When I play with a rogue merc, I make one in the first 2s Razor/Cedar/Double Bow that drops. You are quite likely to find at least one such bow in Act V.

(Razor Bow is inferior to the other two, but more likely to drop.)

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

@jiansonz: Would using Cleglaws Pincers for the KB and losing some MF be worth it?

Have cleared the Bloody Foothills at p3 and gained a level and finally rolled Decoy, might give me a chance to increase the player setting.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

A tankless bowazon could really benefit from Cleglaw's Pincers, I would use them. You need KB and the slowing is an added bonus. Less retreating. And with decoy maybe you could bump up to p3 in some areas.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Anya has been rescued, I have been playing p3 for most of the areas, I changed my bow for this, not ideal but it is getting the job done... shopped from Larzuk.

Savage Long War Bow of Slaughter
Two-Hand Damage: 5 to 57
Required Level: 19
+78% Enhanced Damage
+17 to Maximum Damage

This combined with some throwing axes with prevent monster heal is what has been letting me progress albeit slowly. The point in Decoy has allowed me to change bows, though I will want KB sooner or later.

Found a couple of S/U: Rite of Passage, Bloodrise, Sparking Mail and Vemon Ward.

I think I'll skip Nihlatak until I get my mercenary, that is Nightmare ActII.

Also I have fully embraced Rule 11 (jiansonz prerogative)

Played AvengingAngel a bit more, Anya was rescued and the Drifter Cavern cleared of evil. Decoy is making easier to dish out damage since I'm forced to reposition less times. Dropwise this session was lucky, 2 Amn runes, nice for future weapon upgrades, also opens the option to make Strenght.

I also found this couple of Amulets:

Storm Scarab (might be used in Nightmare, at least before I get a Merc if resists are too bad)
Amulet
Fire Resist +23%
Lightning Resist +30%
Poison Resist +36%

Gymnastic Amulet of the Leech
2% Life stolen per hit
+2 to Passive and Magic Skills (Amazon Only)

Felicitous Amulet of Luck (and this baby which I put to use right away, the ammy before had 14% MF)
42% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items

Anya's reward:

Storm Quill (will try it out to see if it outperforms my current bow)
Reflex Bow
Two-Hand Damage: 10 to 30
+16% Enhanced Damage
+27 to Attack Rating
+8 to Maximum Damage
Adds 1-26 lightning damage
20% Increased Attack Speed
Hit Causes Monster to Flee 18%
+1 to Bow and Crossbow Skills (Amazon Only)

Also shopped and Artisan Great Helm and this nice pair of boots:

Amber Greaves of Luck
Lightning Resist +31%
34% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

While Randi_TrueBlood has dropped down to /players1, she is quite safe, and an has ok damage. She'll proceed with NM and Hell at normal players settings, as she is quite slow, and hasn't got a good tank. This gamble was so close, and yet so far away.

Maiden's Amulet of Luck

A great increase in MF, but so close (Assassin) to some desired skills! Other than that, she is part way through Act 1, NM, with a Rogue's 'Gemmed Superior Long Bow' that still does adequate damage!

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Well, it´s been slow, but now my Barbarian Brad has made some decent progress. He´s just teamed up with Flux the lightning mage in Kurast.

Progress was slow already in Black Marsh, especially those Brute types took a long time to kill. It was often quite dangerous, too. Ridiculous in the first act! But missing the initial merc is a major thing if you do not have access to quickly rising skill-based damage, and you are (like me) stubborn about going with /players 8.

Brad had two things going for him, tough:
* Big life pool. Even with a moderate VIT investment, he passed 200 life near the end of the act.
* Barbs are very good at drinking healing potions. The Minor Healers do not do much for a caster-type character, but they bring many life points for Brad.

I met a pretty tough archer boss pack in Forgotten Tower. Used Taunt for the first time against them. Worked out well.

Find Potion was a good skill to have in this act, because it can destroy all those Fallen corpses so they won´t be resurrected. Gave me a little bit more wealth as well. :)
It does not work on skeletons or ghosts, though. It does work on maggot babies and Dried Corpses produced by a Mummy Sarcophagus. You can´t get anything with Find Item from these, so Find Potion is the better choice on them. The only "endless" enemy type that Find Item works on is the flesh beasts in act IV.

Considering how tough packs of regular rogue meleers or goats were for Brad, I was pretty scared of The Smith. But he is apparently not immune to Knockback, so I switched to Bash and beat him easily.

Bottlenecks are nice.

The first really good drop for Brad happened in the Cathedral. A Champion Tainted gave him Dimoak´s Hew, the unique Bardiche. Its 2-54 damage was quite a step up from the 6-11 physical and 6-8 fire damage on his Gemmed Scepter.

Dimoak´s was used for the rest of the act, plus in the first areas in Act II I played, Halls of the Dead. I actually found two more Dimoak´s along the way - one from Andariel and one in the Halls.

As soon as I had found the appropriate runes, Brad switched to a "Steel" Flail. Much easier progress with that, due to its speed, the OW and the ability to use a shield. I started with a Bone Shield of Deflection, but found one with even better blocking about halfway through the act (see below).

After gambling a couple of circlets, I decided to skip that project and instead put two mid-sized Topazes in a Mech´s/Balance helmet. 32% MF is hard to beat for a gambled circlet, so I switched to other gambling targets. At level 26, it was a little too soon for Boots of Luck gambling, so I went for amulets instead. On my 3rd-4th try, I got the one I still use.

Some time later, I started Boots of Luck gambling. Burning 200k or so, I bagged this beauty. That´s endgame material, methinks...

Current skills:
Howl 4
Find Potion 3
Taunt 1
Shout 3
Battle Orders 1 (I had saved many skill points for level 24. I distributed them until I had scored BO - that left me with only 4 spare points, and I haven´t gotten any more in BO since then.)

Sword Mastery 3
Axe Mastery 2
Mace Mastery 1
Pole Arm Mastery 2
Throwing Mastery 1
Spear Mastery 1
Increased Stamina 1
Iron Skin 1
Increased Speed 2 (kind of nice - my Medium Weight shield does not bother me beacuse of this)

Bash 1
Leap 1
Stun 1

Primary Gear:
* Mechanic´s Full Helm of Balance with 2x topaz
* Rare amulet with 20% Cold Resist, 3% Mana Steal, 48% Gold Find and 23% Magic Find
* 'Steel' Flail
* Superior 3s Breast Plate with 3x flawed topaz
* Stormguild unique Large Shield
* Tangerine (8) Heavy Gloves of Fortune (25)
* 19% Nagelring
* Ocher (20) Belt of Equilibrium
* Fortuitous (13) Ring of Warding
* Boots of Luck (31)

Switch
* Rare Pilum with 8-28 physical and 1-8 lightning damage, some poison and AR
* 2s Bone Shield

Flux the Lightning Iron Wolf:
* Captain´s Circlet of the Magus
* Azure (8) Broad Sword of Slaying
* 'Stealth' Breast Plate
* 3s Kite Shield with flawed sapphire and ruby

Some notes for merc gear:

- Those gems in the shield is all I can think of affording at the moment. No way I am putting topazes there, and I do not want to put chipped or regular gems there either. I want them for weapon rerolling if I make it far. Flawed diamonds would be nice, but I use them for making Savage polearms. The next flawed ruby I find goes in the third socket, to protect Flux from council´s Hydras, vampire Meteors, shaman Infernos, etc.

- Flux' weapon is extremely lame, I know, but there are very few options at this stage. If only Act III mercs could use wands or orbs...
I suppose a Crescent Moon sword would be good down the road, but there are probably 20 better uses for Um runes.
I am actually thinking about installing the RWM, just to Flux can have some better gear. These guys will never be overpowered in the current version anyway.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Join the dark side! At least for Brad and Flux. That Spirit calls out to you!

NM Andariel fell. Randi is progressing safely, but slowly. In Act 2, she shopped a Chromatic Spiked Shield (I would *love* to see a Chromatic Bone Shield of Deflecting!) and Larzuk rewarded her with this:

Chromatic Spiked Shield of Nova Shield
Spiked Shield
Defense: 15
Chance to Block: 0
Durability: 40 of 40
Required Level: 42
Required Strength: 30
Fingerprint: 0x63bfe63c
Item Level: 55
Version: Expansion 1.10+
10% Chance to cast level 3 Nova when struck
All Resistances +49
2 Sockets (1 used)
Socketed: Perfect Diamond

She also has a new MF item in the form of a Rhyme Bone Shield.

Edit: I thought I posted it, but this is a very nice gamble/imbue(?) Must've been a gamble.

Doom Crest
Circlet
Defense: 24
Durability: 27 of 35
Required Level: 48

+2 to Martial Art Skills (Assassin Only)
+6 to Strength
+27 to Life
All Resistances +20

Poison Resist +37%
Level 1 Confuse (4/22 Charges)

NM Duriel also fell, without too much trouble. A bit of hit and running, keeping him slowed by 50%. Then equipping a Strength claw, and using the Crushing Blow to do some extra damage, and constant Shadow casting. It really wasn't a bad fight.

@Drystan: That's one sick circlet! Confuse might come in handy, too :)

Completed Normal some time ago, so I don't recall all of my glorious moments  But I remember Act III being very generous with my current amulet and gloves:

Code:
Order Mark
Amulet
Required Level: 13
Fingerprint: 0xaff90909
Item Level: 22
Version: Expansion 1.10+

+30% Enhanced Defense
+15 Defense
200% Extra Gold from Monsters
28% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
+2 to Light Radius
So much for the two items I used on this slot since finding them. The other spots changed from time to time, and when fighting Baal I used an upped Soulflay with Rhyme Shield, 2 Fortuitous Rings (15% MF each, one found, one cubed), 35% MF boots (shopped), Arctic Furs+Belt (40%MF), and a 3 PTopaz Assault Helmet with +2 BO, +2 Shout, +1 Taunt.

On switch I shopped for Sounding weapons in Act III and for Resonant Javelins/Pilums at Anya's for the bonus to find item and BO.

Mercenary (Act I Fire Rogue) is equipped with a 3 Flawed Topaz BP, a 2 PTopaz Great Helm with 1 os left, and the following bow:
Code:
Death Flight

Increased Speed 2

Bash 3
Leap 2
Double Swing 3
Stun 2
Leap Attack 2
Concentrate 1
Whirlwind 2
Berserk 2

[highlight]Gameplay[/highlight]
I used Double Swing for most of the game, till I had the runes for Rhyme (somewhere around Act 5) because of the speed of the attack, mostly swinging axes (best mastery). Switched to one-handed and shield afterwards and used Concentrate a lot in Act 5, which came in handy against Yetis and such who can stun you. Once I rolled Berserk my hopes rose to manage NM and maybe even hell (physical immunes!). Soulflay was a really cool drop, because I constantly ran out of mana, and I used one of my two Sol runes to up it to Dacian Falx, doing noticable damage with it (albeit less than my rogue...). With it, I could even whirl without running out of Mana :jig: Damage with WW is pathetic though...

The Barb was pretty safe all of the time with BO (as long as I didn't forget to use it), Howl, Taunt, War Cry...often, I used Howl to send packs away, then used Taunt to call them back one after the other, which works pretty well actually. I even used Battle Cry a lot, esp. against champions, which I couldn't howl away.

I did Ancients on /P3 due to my pathetic damage, and fought Baal on /p3 too for the same reasons. Baal was nice enough to drop Ginther's Rift (non-ethereal, a shame really :whistling:), which does far more damage than upped Soulflay, but doesn't have any ML...that's why I used Larzuk's quest to socket it with a PSkull:
Code:
Ginther's Rift
Dimensional Blade
One Hand Damage: 28 - 75
Durability: 60 of 60
Required Level: 37
Required Strength: 85
Required Dexterity: 60
Fingerprint: 0x7c808b84
Item Level: 60
Version: Expansion 1.10+
+30% Increased Attack Speed
116% Enhanced Damage
Adds 50 - 120 Magic Damage
3% Mana stolen per hit
4% Life stolen per hit
Magic Damage Reduced by 10
Repairs 1 Durability in 5 Seconds
+40 Maximum Durability 1 Sockets (1 used)
Socketed: Perfect Skull

I might consider a Insight Partizan - if I find the base - as an alternative though...only 2% MF less but lots of more damage (well, and no blocking anymore...) What do you think?

[highlight]Samson, the random level 48 Barbarian, and Sharyn, Fire Rogue, NM Rogue Camp next.[/highlight]

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Sounds like you and Samson have a solid tactic going on.

Mephisto and Diablo have both fallen. Randi is so fragile! Mephiso got caught on some terrain, so I had a long fight just Lightning Sentrying him. It was simple, except I wanted Blaise the Rogue to get the final blow. That nearly cost her... I went to town, and re-equipped with MF gear. Meph had walked away, and when I got down, he charged, casting Charged Bolt and Lightning everywhere. And I had no juvies left, because I replaced them with Mana potions.
Against Diablo, I began by casting Lightning sentries around corners, but gave up on that tactic. Chance to Slow 50% really does wonders. I may not have much AR, but Diablo became a wimp (almost.) Upon his death, I don't know what he hit me with, but it hurt a bit. It wasn't as bad as I thought, but with MF gear, she has 200-250 less life, which would've put her around 50 life left from that one blow upon Diablo's death.
Also, Diablo's freezing palm always hits. With him being slowed, I assumed I could dodge it, just to be chilled while at a good distance from him!

She has also changed Blaise's bow from a Zephyr to an Edge, which seems to be doing more damage.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Insane Wayne my good old friend! Good to see you back playing again! Jian you keep trucking along also! Nice too see! I have dearly missed our journeys together in the numerous tournaments we have participated in. I miss those days! And i still have yet to achieve a Guardian in an untwinked tourney!!!!

Damn read the last few pages and that little D2 itch started creeping in, strong nostalgia! I wonder if this game can lure me back one more time! I mean its done it to me about 10x now, so one more can't hurt right?

Maybe this hiatus i have been on has done me good and the game might be "new" to me somewhat.

Hmmmmm *ponders*

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Right thats it!.....IM IN!!! Breaking out of my hiatus/retirement and joing the fray! I feel like a noob all over again. * Refreshes memory of how to play :whistling: *

Rolled myself a Druid named Xavier (Xav for short), who shall be aided by a Fire Rogue. I am actually very pleased with this roll! Considering the dismal luck i had with my past characters in this tournament some 2 years ago (needed to refresh my memory and read over the thread a little bit :P).

Lets see how this pans out! Hopefully i can build up a solid base of summons for tanking purposes (high level ravens would be a great help too), coupled with elementals and possibly some shifting action. I guess my fate lies with the dice!

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Welcome back, Morathi! Nice to see you around here again! Best of luck with Xav, the random Druid.
