Titan Whirler, or MFer - Advice seeking!

Heya folks,

Sifting through my junk, I noticed the sorry old Tombreaver with 3 sockets sitting there, all unloved, not on a merc and not being used at all. I don't MF baal ever, like I used to in HC, but I was thinking about doing it again. Granted, it's easier with a Sorc or Hammerdin, but I just used to enjoy doing it with a Barb due to having a little bit of an extra buffer in terms of lag, sucking and not paying attention while doing mind-numbing running (not that Baal runs are bad, they're pretty fun if you kill your way there instead of just tele'n all the time).

So I'm thinking.... either have some fun with a Titan build (no MF, just raw STR, Tombreaver, and other gear) or just an old Polearm Whirler with a tuned build for balance and setup for `ok' MF while killing (like 100~200MF on normal gear while killing). The Titan however might suffer due to not having a super awesome weapon (like an eth botd great poleaxe, which I would lust for). The tuned Whirler is pretty much ready to go as soon as I figure out what I want to do.

A few questions then...

A. - Is a Titan made with a Tombreaver worth while, or is the damage output just too low in large games?

B. - Building a tuned MFer for Baal Runs with the Tombreaver, what would you socket? A 15% IAS jewel is a given for the last breakpoint for WW, but what about the other 2 sockets? ED jewels? Max jewels? Pskulls? Amns? I'm clueless what to use here that will be greatly beneficial (note: probably using a Stealskull).

Anyhow, haven't made a big old barb in a long time so thinking of going Polearm... Hwanin's set while low, and Reaver once I'm high level.

Cheers,

make a fury wolf IMO.. 3 socketed tomb reaver is among the best wep. in the game for them instead of just "decent"' on a barb.If you insist on a barb then the next best thing get wolfhowl and make a wolf barb :D , 3 sheals will hit for a ..5fpa attack with feral rage. they run super fast as a perk.

only poor thing about a wolf barb is the level 79 to equip the helm, and normaly no combat skill. ( I happen to always get bezerk for im/pi spots)

20 polearm mast
20 bo
20 shout
1-5 in Nat res,incr speed,iron skin
then whatever you want with the rest of the points.

Heya,

I thought about going all Wolfy with a Druid, but in the end, I don't want to just stand there and get Mobbed and the Druid doesn't get Natural Resists or anything, so I'll have a deficiency in resists in Hell and no way to deal with physical immunes either as a Wolf. Also, the life of the Druid is based on something that can be killed very easily with the Oak. I guess I just like the defacto utility of a Barb having NatResist/BO. That and the escapism of WW compared to standing in the middle of a fanta minion group trying to FeralRage/Fury away to my doom....

If that makes sense...

Cheers though,

Update,

So here's what I'm thinking now.... lemme see what others think:

Tombreaver (socket1: 15% IAS, socket2: hel rune, socket3: hel rune)
Tal's Armor(topaz)
Dungu belt
SoulDrainer gloves
Wartrav boots
StealSkull (topaz)
RavenFrost
Rare Ring with Resists
Prismatic Amulet
Res charms to make up for lacking

The idea is to bring the reaver down to very low REQs so that everything can be wielded around ~100 str, and basically not have to put much if any DEX into the guy, leaving the rest to go heavy on the Vitality for a big fat life pool of over 4k life without charms and stuff. That's good enough for solo runs.

Any thoughts? Rotten vegetables? Am a fool for the Hel rune thing?

Cheers,

Hey folks,

Well just as an update, I've made my cookie and he's level 85 currently. Everything was easy to get as I already had it, except the Tal armor which I got for a humble Gul rune. I sort of built him around the idea of survival because I'm still playing very HC oriented, even though it's not HC that I'm in (Ladder, USeast actually), so that may explain some of my choices that may look like "DUDE!" when you see them. I made my equipment easy to use so that I can dump as much into Vitality as possible, which right now, I'm approaching 400 vitality for a nice healthy pool. I'm using only a few charms which consist of steel's for the AR and some STR smalls (with a few resists).

Currently I'm just trying to tweak gear a little, to try and get things setup so that I can actually run through the worldstone down to Baal's disco room, but the Gloams slow me down greatly. They zap and it hurts, even with resistance, it hurts like a mother. So that's where you all come in, perhaps someone can advise me.

95Str (105 with Travs)
62Dex (~100 with equip)
Rest in Vit

20 Polearm
20 Whirl
20 Bo
20 Shout
5 NatResist
1 in reqs/one-point-wonders

Currently using (these ones I cannot really change, they're the basis of him):

TombReaver (30+res, forgot exact number, it's not high--can't change unless someone donates BOTD)
Tal's Armor (topazed)
WarTravs

Currently using (totally open to change):

StealSkull (topazed)
Crescent Moon for dual-leech
Laying of Hands for extra deamon punishment and 50% fire res
Raven Frost for the AR/Dex and of course, no freezie
Rare leecher ring
Tal's Belt (for the lack of not putting anything else yet)

Right now, my Fire res is maxed. My other res's are 41. Poison is 1.

I need to jumble some of the changeable gear while keeping my MF around 300 as it currently is about that, and increasing my Light/Cold to 75 and get my poison up there too. I don't mind swigging an antidote here and there, but I'd still like a hard res if possible (while keeping trav's, I don't really want to switch to treks, since my goal is MF).

I have Daemonlimb on switch for the great AR boost (puts me into the 5k+ area), and I'm thinking about making a high lighting resist shield or something, and sticking on a light absorb item somewhere for swapping while running just to tank some of that gloam action. It's really annoying. Any pointers (and don't suggest Enigma please, I don't have one unless someone donates)?

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Well, one thing you could change is the helm, put the tals mask on. You will gain 15 res@, 10 dual leech and 60 life. Since you are wearing tals armour and tals belt you will gain the 65 MF partial set bonus. If your StealSkull is perfect MF you gain only 15 MF (loosing 50, gaining 65) if your stealskull is lower you gain more. The lost IAS from StealSkull does no different because only weapon-ias matters for WW. The only downside is that Tal's mask is known for its terrible looks - well StealSkull isn't a beauty either!

EDIT: Also, the a Wisp-ring will help you against Lightning with its absorb and the MF is allways sweet!

Heya,

Very true. I thought about going Tal's helm/armor/belt. The bonuses are nice, good res, leech in general. But as you stated, horrible looks. Alas, maybe I'll just be doomed to look goofy. Then again, I think the Cryptix axe looks silly too compared to a sweet Halberd. I think I'll take your advise on the helm. More MF is always good, and I can still socket the Tal's with whatever I'm lacking (more MF, or Light Res if need be).

The Wisp is also a good idea. I should see about trading for one.

Cheers,

Well in my post I am asuming that you will socket the mask with a ptopaz because otherwise you will lose the MF of your stealskull (30-50) + 24. Or in other words: If the MF of your stealskull is 41 or higher you will lose 41+24=65 MF, and you will not gain any MF, if your stealskull is perfect you will lose 9 MF. I simply left out the Ptopaz in my last post because I figured you would socket all youir gear for maximum MF. On the other hand, even if you loose that 9 MF you will gain: 5 dual leech, 15 res all, 60 life + whatever you socket into it, like another 15 res@, 30light res or whatever you will loose 10 FHR, and roughly 110 def (if un upgraded StealSkull). You will most likly improve your survivabillity a lot if you switched to Tals mask and survivability is THE most important thing for any MF-char, you won't find much stuff if you die all the time!

Good luck

Gloam resolve

Thundergods vigor...I greatly respect this belt over dungo's/string/etc...as the light sorb/max resist for light is awesome versus Gloam/Darksoul/etc...
Wisp Projector is another way to go.
Right now I have an amazon with 85 resist to light, and the sorb from T-god belt, and I have no need for any wisp, as I can sit in the middle of fanat darksoul pack and just catch a tan. You still take damage, but not scary amounts.
A couple of light resist charms could greatly help here as you want light immune max or as close to it as you can get if you plan to run WSK2/WSK3/Throne Room.
Just my 2 coppers worth

Heya,

I think I'll go the Wisp rout so that I can keep Tal's belt equipped for the extra dex/mana/MF addition with the three parts together. I'll stack some charms for the light res, that will be easier for now and I'll see how it goes. If I still just get mauled by lighting, I'll look into going with the Tgods and jumble gear some more.

New Question:

When running that worldstone run.... which merc is deal here? At first, I thought A2 with an aura, but I also assume he'll just eat IronMaiden or get swarmed and killed too easily. Or any Merc at all? Any advise here would be grand.

Cheers,

Wisp is better

I started with T-Gods because it was cheaper. Wisp offers more protection, and is a better choice, it is just a little harder to pick up.
If you have resistance issues you could Um your Tal-Rasha pieces instead ot Ptopaz and then make it up with MF charms versus resistance charms, if UM's are easier for you come up with.
