A magic item + three perfect gems=same item with new prefix and probably suffix. Item level stays the same, so use level 50+ grand charms to get a skiller.

So, I had actually written my earlier's post yesterday and decided to post it today.

But, yes, Polgara has triumphed over the many challenges in Act 5, and has become the first TWD2 Guardian! Yay!

Saving the barbarians was easy enough, teleport around the level like mad, find the cages, shoot them free, boom.

Anya was a bit more annoying. Through sheer luck and hopping across the lake, I found Frozenstein a little faster than I'd have liked. He was LICI (or at least, LECI.....), so I parked him, and sat on the other side of the river and zapped his minions with CL. They eventually all fell, and I doused Anya with a magical thawing potion.

Malah showed her appreciation with +10 resists, Anya showed hers with an exceptionally crappy orb.

Nilly is still alive -- something I intend to correct later.

The ancients battle was pretty scary. No FEs, fortunately, but my hireling died within ten seconds of the battle beginning. Fortuantely, I had Static'ed them down to half (except for the LI one), and then I orbed two of them to death, running around the map like mad.

The Spire of Lazarus is really a good weapon for this battle. It kept my mana up in the absence of Warmth.

The thrower and the spinner down, I was left with the jumper. Lightning stream! *leap* *teleport* *lightning blast* *repeat*.

This is what pushed Polgara to Level 82.

I teleported around WSK1, found WSK2, and got into the waypoint.

At this time, I stopped, restarted, and boom, ran to WSK3.

I actually killed things there (gasp), and went into the Throne Room.

Ooh, scary. Oblivion Mages/Knights, big ol' fire spitters, and meteor chunkers.

At least, no gloams....

Baal's Minions went easily, except for Wave 2 and their mad, mad poison damage. That took six trips back to town in and of itself.

I ended up parking the Hungry fire-spitter, as he was CILI.

Lister's buddies actually sat up next to Baal while I shattered him, and then came one by one down to the middle of the room so I could kill them without fear.

Baal was actually much easier than he's ever been. I static fielded him to half, kept my merc well lubricated with potions, and stayed back to orb him. He didn't drop anything worth having, except an Angelic Halo, which went into the stash.

A beautiful HC victory screen later, and Polgara went after the Cow King. He, also, dropped nothing.

Now I can take a break for a while while people catch up. :)

Hias just defeated Diablo.
My first entry into the Outer Steppes was quite hard, because I meet 3 Boss packs and a pack of champions. It took some time to battle my way through these monsters. The exit to the Plains of Dispair was only 2 screens away to the right. On entering the Plains I meet a Venom Lord boss pack on the staires. Defeating them took some time again, as only one or two of my minions where able to attack at once and I had problems cursing the Venom Lords. But at last I was the winner of this fight. Izual was just behind the entrance to the Plains and a real push over. Clay Golem and Decripify made a nice little statue.
On I went into the City and into the River of Flames where the Hellforge dropped an Io rune (very nice :rant: ), but it could have been worse.
Next Hias entered the Chaos Sanctuary. The Sanctuary was easier than in Normal, because there weren't much Oblivian Knights. I opened the Seals killed the boss packs without problems and awaited Diablo.
In normal I had a hard time with him, as he constantly killed my Skellies. But this time he didn't even kill one of my minions. He didn't even spawn his lightning breath or his nova thing. I think this was due to the fact, that I used the statue trick (Clay Golem, Decripify, Cold Mages). As always, no usefull items from Diablo.

OMG, I am so freakin´ far behind! I think I have dedicated a lot of my D2 time to this TWD-quest (and that´s a pretty substantial sum of hours!), but not until today have all my characters left Normal. How is this possible? Maybe the "Full Clear, Sell All" style of mine has something to do with it...

I must say that Fanaticism is a beautiful, incredible skill! This is the first time I use it and I now understand why I respect it so much when a monster pack has it.

Odysseus killed very few monsters himself. He left that work to his trusty Defiance merc. The Savage Partizan of Alacrity may have been slightly underpowered by itself, but not when the merc gets boosted by level 10-15 Fanaticism. It´s the extra attack speed that is the main benefit.

A succubus Champion in Icy Cellar left an intersting weapon for the merc. I decided to upgrade it just before playing the Cow level. It resulted in this:

Very similar speed and only slighly lower average damage than the Partizan, but with life steal.


During the Ancients battle, Korlic totally ignored the merc and went for Odysseus. Firing arrows into Korlic at point blank range seemed like a bad idea, so I switched to the trusty old 'Steel' Flail and Crimson Bone Shield of Deflecting (why, oh why can´t a bloody Shael rune drop anytime soon, so I can get rid of this crappy shield!?!) but I still went with Holy Shock. It was surprisingly effective.

I am still undecided what mercenary Odysseus wants when he gets to Act 2 NM. I could continue with Defiance (merc has pretty good defense even with crappy armor), I could switch to Blessed Aim, Might or Holy Freeze. They would all be useful, I guess. Any ideas? I have no item reward slot for Odyseeus´ merc so it will be runewords, rares or socketed items for him. I need a good tank; what I fear the most are champion packs of fast "get-in-your-face" melee brute type monsters. I have read that AR can be a problem for Rangers when using Holy Shock. Odysseus has 75 DEX now and I would like to add as little as possible to that. His reward slots are gloves in NM and weapon in Hell. I am perfectly content with around 55% chance to hit with the arrows. In Hell, I plan on having a fast attack and Knockback. A 'Nadir' helm will be used in cramped areas and when there are large packs with dangerous ranged attackers.


Oh yeah, Odysseus found another good item. Most of Elayna´s resist problems are hereby solved. I promptly upgraded them to:

I give up 16 units of MF (Ouch! :lol: ) and gain some very good resists and a pair of boots she kan kick the bejeezus out of her enemies with. Since Elayna doesn´t need Faster Run (she uses BoS nearly always) this may very well be her final boots (even though I plan to use 4-5 imbues on Sharkskin Boots). Some really nice all-purpose boots for her.

Yep -- and later today she'll go after Nilly. First, though, she's going to run Mephisto over and over and over again. My first run of him today netted me a beautiful Reaper's Toll. Which went straight to Liselle for her Merc to use when he hits level 75. Unfortunately, it's not ethereal, but what can you do. I'm not sure what to socket in it (hmm... I've got a Mal rune... and a rare 30% ED jewel w/ poison damage)....

As for the staff toting part, it was actually the most intelligent choice for me. I only switched over when the CI was the only one left alive. The Spire has benefits over my Tal Rasha's for two reasons. One is that it boosts static field and lightning skills. Number two is +43% mana regen. This kept her 600 mana full almost the entire time (except when Korlic hit her with his mana burn). I actually only got hit once the entire battle, and that was when I couldn't run away from a leap attack because the game thought he was already standing there or some such.

Her battle was very easy, but I'm a little worried about Liselle's chances since one of them always spawns LI. (and one CI, one FI...)

Have you considered making a Passion bow? It's got IAS, a huge boost to AR, and relatively easy runes to get (in that, I had them all in Act IV NM). Riphook is another good weapon that I've used (with a limited Paladin, nonetheless), that's great for the slowing target, IAS boost, and OW. Plus it has a low Dex requirement, which will keep you from having to dump too many points into it.

Crafted Hit Power gloves, of course, are a must for your knockback. It's also a fairly cheap recipe, and you don't have to stick Nef runes into anything. :)

The more I consider it, the more I think that a Blessed Aim merc would be better for you. If you have knockback -and- a Passion bow... I'd think you'd be okay. If things get scary, you can always switch to Fanatacism and go gatling gun on them to keep them away from you while you regroup.

I've never played a Shock Ranger, though, so.... take this all with a grain of salt.

The plan as it looks now (if I don´t find anything special at all) is:

Nightmare: Chance Guards and 'Zephyr' Double Bow. Merc does >90% of the killing.
Hell: Blood gloves and Rogue´s Row (enormous speed, resists) with a Nef.

'Passion' looks yummy, but then I more or less have to go with hitpower gloves.

I have started in Nightmare and I noticed something weird. According to the character screen, I have 63% chance to hit a Fallen Shaman with the bow, using Holy Shock. However, it seems like I hardly miss at all. Granted, the buggers die from 2-3 arrows but for those that require 3 hits, I should not always hit and kill with three arrows in succession, as I seem to do. I am certainly not complaining, but who knows how long it will be this easy?

I just found something interesting. Every point in Blessed Aim gives a passive +5% bonus to AR. Kind of like a weak version of Penetrate. After Fanaticism, Resist Lightning and Holy Shock are maxed (requires only 13 more skill points) I could start pumping that. There is not much else to do with the future skill points. OK, Salvation does give a synergy to Holy Shock, but only at 1/3 of the size that Resist Lightning does. Or, I could start pumping Resist Fire for the passive bonus to maximum fire resist (+1%-unit for every two points).

Yet another crap. I made a mistake thinking I could outrun a Holy Freeze Extra Strong undead stygian boss in Sewers 2. The update with Mace's final score will come first thing tomorrow morning (Denver time). I swear I heard the noise of drinking a full rejuv potion right before the death screen.

As you can obviously tell, I'm running Mephisto to boost my offerings to the TWD prize pool (and because it's fun to blast him to pieces!)....

I'm also seeing items for the first time, as I've never really done Meph runs much before. It's exciting to rush and ID things I've never seen before to see if I'll want to use them before sending them off to the prize pack...

Well some bad news here, my sorceress Atma has died in the Tamoe Highland going to do a pit run. She was level 70 with mf gear. Was teleporting around and I was hit with a arrow of cold and I saw a boss back and tried to teleport but I was stunned with not much FHR and I couldnt exit fast enough. Gonna push my other two characters.

Also, let me offer my condolences to Hierdran. I know what its like to loose a high level contender, because, unfortunately, I too must report a bit of bad news: Angirasa, the zon is dead. A one hit kill by Korlic, the Ancient, just a few moments ago.

O how I wish she had been able to use guided arrow. For a zon nothing beats guided arrow with the Ancients. I have killed them numerous times in both SC and HC using that one point wonder. But alas, she had to rely upon LF and CS. For some reason, the ancients could have cared less about my merc and valk, who werent doing much dmg anyway. Rather, they chose to chase after me--relentlessly. Why do the ancients hate zons so much? While running around, trying to escape their attacks and get off a shot here and there, she came too close to Korlic, and before she even knew what happened--Deeds.

Lost a nice set of titans (197% ed) on that unfortunate death. But at least her death at the hands of the Hell Ancients was somewhat honorable. Better than dying to Baal's minions in NM like my stupid pally.

Now the only team member left is Atharvan, the summon/curse necro, who is chilling in Harrogath. I dont really anticipate any problems with him, including the Ancients. But you never know. Anyway, im too depressed to calculate my point totals right now. Hopefully I will find enough enthusiasm to post a complete update in the next day or so.

All I can say to Erimatbrad is congratulations!!--and be careful with both Polgara and Liselle!! You might want to finish off Nilly before you die from some mishap on a Baal run, so that as far as the tourney goes she is finished, and gets her full point total. But nevermind, Im just babbling incoherently. At this point im not sure I trust even my own judgement anymore. Think Ill go drown my sorrows by mindlessly watching TV, or washing my clothes. Sigh....

The Ancients are definitely the most difficult part of Act V imo... Was Korlic FE, by any chance? It sounds like it might be a FE-related death.

I'm considering going after Nilly, but really, he might be more difficult than Baal and the like. Just because of the fact that he likes blowing things, and people, up. For now, I'll run Mephisto to get some decent equipment and money built up, and then run after corpse man afterwards. I'm trying to be very cautious with her...

Once the good items run out, I'll get tired of running bosses and want a change. That's when you'll hear of the exciting adventure of Polgara, the Nilly Slayer.
 
She was trying to ID the mods on the ancients when she died. Not sure if he was FE or not, it all happened so fast. Sorry to hear about your loss too SuperSavage. It always hurts.

In spite of the losses, this has been a lot of fun. Im now thinking of making an HC witchywoman, using witchwild string for strafe, with LF as a backup for PIs. I found a WWS while runnining around with my HC trappasin recently, and have read some nice things about the little bow that could. It will be my chance to avenge the death of Angirasa with one of her more well equipped and skilled sisters.

Btw, I have yet to die at the hands of Nilly....ever. I generally lure all of his minions to one side of the two passage ways leading to his chamber and slaughter them there...out of the range of his CE. Then I go around to the other side, where there are no bodies, for my approach to Nilly himself. Then he is helpless as a kitten.

Man, this is why HC is unfulfilling. Game over for Mace. It's frustrating to be doing so well and then have a random encounter end it, especially when Mace is virtually untouchable. One out of five attacks had a chance to make it past defense rating, and one out of four attacks could make it past blocking. Multiply those together and you get one out of twenty attacks successfully hit when I'm standing still. Which was the problem. Life started getting low, and because the dolls explode when they die, I wanted to back up to give the red potion a chance to recover life. And my amazing 1:20 chance to get hit dropped to something more like 1:6.

On the other hand, SC is unfulfilling because you can recover and don't have to worry about death. I don't have as much respect for Mats/Pats because of that. (I've finished quite a few SC chars on B.net.) I'm probably a little jaded because I've been playing D2 since 1.0.

Sometimes I don't know why I keep on playing, since HC and SC are apparently so unsatisfying, but the thrill of escaping death is very alluring.

Anyway, after the appropriate mourning/recovery period, Axe and Claw will forge their paths through the jungles of Kurast.

I must say that I am very proud you have made a Guardian, erimatbrad. I can only hope that this success is replicated to your other characters and also to the other participants in this tournament! :drink:

However there are also times when such luck doesn't always shine. High level deaths are always a burden and in Hardcore they're frankly depressing. My condolences go out to SuperSavage who has lost one of his characters recently, and to the others who have also experienced this misfortune. Do not give up hope on your other characters. There is always a way. If a map seed is difficult or there seems to be imminent danger ahead, save and exit, and live to fight again. Better to run now than die and never have another opportunity.
 
Congratulations. Now I understand why #1 lasted a year...Some people push through, others die, and some just don't do much at all.

Heh heh. I've not gone to Halls of Vaught in Hell, but in NM and Normal it's practically the only area that I've never had a character die...

No particular problems during act 1 NM for Odysseus. There was one slightly dangerous event, though. In the Barracks, the minions of a Cold Enchanted Extra Strong Dark Shaman hit pretty hard when Odysseus tried to get some clear shots at the shaman. This was a pretty severe wake-up call. I retreated and thought about the situation.

This sitation only happened because some minions got rapidly resurrected.
What can a Paladin do to remove corpses? Let´s take a look... Hm, Redemption... That sounds like a plan. Rather than spending five skill points to get that skill, I decided to buy a scepter with it. I wanted at least level 2 (so I wouldn´t have to wait for too long for the skill to work). I bought a Grand Scepter of Revivification with +2 to Redemption. The life regeneration is somewhat useful, but the extra +skills made it insanely expensive. Over 500k! The +1 to Meditation is useless because Odysseus doesn´t use mana for anything and the +2 Fist of the Heavens is a forbidden (and pricey!) Combat Skill. Oh, well...

It worked beautifully! Now my tactics vs. shamen was to lure out all the warriors, have the merc kill them (with Fanaticism help) and then Redeem all the corpses. This new toy will be a great asset in act 2 as well. Yes, indeed.
It definately worked like a charm against Radament & crew.


Some good recent finds:

* Doomslinger Repeating Crossbow. If I upgrade this, it looks like a viable weapon for Odysseus in Hell. The Rogue´s Bow can easily become one frame faster (any extra IAS will do that) but Doomslinger has 35% chance to pierce, making it a superior weapon in my mind. As a Chu-Ko-Nu, it will have the maximum speed for a crossbow fired by a Pally (11 frames) even without any more IAS or Fanaticism.

* Hwanin´s Justice (set Bill). Good for Herne´s merc. Since he is accompanied by wolves and has help from Oak Sage, the lack of life steal isn´t much of a problem for quite a while, I think.

* 4-socketed Gothic Plate from Tristram. I am building up my first 96% MF armor (2 Ptopazes in it so far; after the next, it will replace the 68% armor the mercs are using).

* Crimson (14% fire resistance) Jewel of Fervor. Should be good for a merc (or character) somewhere down the line, eh?

* The Face of Horror. A personal Grail item for me. Even with the thousands upon thousands of Masks I´ve seen over the years and D2 versions, never before had I seen this particular unique. I kid you not.

* Finally, I have scraped together Amn x3 and Sol x2 and could cube myself a coveted Shael, using some assorted chippies that Elayna (the current Rune Mule) had stored. Welcome, 'Rhyme'! First l33t item of the team!!

* Elayna bought a 2-socketed Cap and made 'Nadir' in it. I plan to let Odysseus wear this in CVT level 2. I made it in a Cap to keep it as cheap as possible to recharge. It still costs 11000 per charge! Using Ral runes to recharge it may not be as wasteful as it seems...

Just to tie up loose ends, Polgara went back after Nilly. It was a lot easier than expected -- lure them away, kill them with Chain Lightning, orb Nilly, and repeat.

One CE went off near Polgara and almost wiped out her near 1000 life. Eep.

Fortunately, the rest went smoothly, and soon there was another dramatic death to watch. He dropped three piles of gold (sigh...), but more importantly, Polgara was now fully complete with her 3WD2 adventure.

I flipped a coin, Zedar got honors to go next.

I'll probably say this every time I play -- Bone Prison is a rediculously overpowered spell.

Nothing came close to hitting me. It -did- take a long time to clear out enemies once I made it to the River, though. I didn't run into a single gloam this adventure (call it luck). Izual gave me the two skill points I needed to max out Bone Wall (giving me full points in Wall, Prison, Spear, and Spirit), so I started to pump CE, and will try to max it.

Please note: I have no points invested in the Curse tree at all. :) I get my boost to Decrep from my necro shield.

The River was filled with Maggots, Urdar, and.. hm... fire breathers, I think. The maggots caused the most trouble because they just... wouldn't... die!

After about 20 minutes, I finally made it to the WP, and hadn't found where Hephy was. I found a very narrow channel I hadn't explored before that led me to the Hellforge.

....Which popped an Io rune. I threw it into a +2 bone spear wand, which gave me a white rune word, with an effective +7 Spear. It does about 100 damage less than the Spirit, but costs 10 mana less. I'm all for it.

Diablo always goes down easy once you can prison and spear him -- he dropped the unique Mancatcher, which I kept in his chest to ponder about... it might make a fun CS weapon for Liselle with it's 50% IAS and poison damage.

Act V led to very little surprises. The first step out led me to a bunch of harpoonists, who can actually throw something over my prisons.

A reroll gave me firespitters and Archers. Excellent. They posed no threat, and soon Shenk was defeated.

In order to free the prisoners, I actually just created giant prisons of my own. After doing this eight times in a month now, I have a good idea of where to run and look.

My last quest of the night was Anya saving. Her guardians? Frozen Beasty things, Sirens, and Ghosts. It really must have been a siren breeding ground, because there were really hundreds of them.

Frozenstein fell victim to the corpses of his allies, and Anya was free! +10 resists and a crappy skull later, and my quest drew to a close for the night.

I hope to have a good amount of play time tomorrow, but probably won't Wednesday, so you may or may not hear about a second Guardian soon....
