Bettina Wegner - Kinder (Children) from 1978
"This is a song for my children, for all children and even more for grown-ups."
I know this song for some time now, but when I heard it again a few minutes ago, I had to sweep away a few tears. I'm glad that my parents lived up to this ideal as closely as it could be expected.
Are such tiny hands
With tiny fingers on them
Don't you ever beat them
They might break apart
Are such tiny feet
With so tiny toes
Don't you ever step on them
They might not be able to walk
Are such tiny ears
That hear so excellent
Don't you ever shout at them
They might become deaf
Are such beautiful mouths
Speaking out everything
Don't you ever forbid
They might not speak anymore
Are such clear eyes
That still can see everything
Don't you blindfold them
They couldn't comprehend
Are so little souls
Frank and completely free
Don't you ever trouble them
They might get harmed
Is such a little spine
That you can hardly see it
Don't you ever bend it
Because it might break
Upright, clear humans
That would be a beautiful aim
We already have
Too many spineless people
