Durf, this is a moot point, but i think paradox really really really bowed out with sublime grace. Paah, just had to say that, for whatever little its worth, anyway...

My utmost respect is still reserved for Darkness alone among those who left us, since he had the self-control to fade away gracefully, and without telling us--in polite language to be sure--that the crew here today frankly doesn't have what it takes to be a good forum.
I think Durf is a boob.:scared:

:teeth:

I also think there are quite a few more that have faded to other horizons very... non-disruptively. Course most of those still lurk here. And sometimes even post.

Hey! Don't look at me. I'm no hero. I just got drunk and passed out in the EMB. As per norm.

And for the record I have been drunk everywhere. Err I meant scarce. But when I do post it is usually just for fun and not D2. So my absense is mostly an effort not to cover your page 1 with OT's and hijacks.

I felt like at the start of 1.10 this forum moved to more business and not so much just having fun. That's not a bad thing, this is a D2 forum after all. But as far as change goes, in my lurking that's the major one that I have noticed. As many have said things will settle out eventually. The ratio of those that take things a bit to seriously will even out with those that can't take anything that way. (except of course for butter and the squid which are serious issues.) I like my D2, or any other game for that matter, blended with some absurdity. And when the time comes maybe, just maybe...

I'll return Durf's credit card.

*runs away, laughing maniacly*

Have fun out there all!

This is turning out to an excellent thread but can someone better than me record the minutes, to make it more constructive.

Here's a summary from what I've read:

A few members are not too sure whats going on, but to true tradition, we blame Durf  That much hasn't changed.

I've counted the posts and out of 60+ posts, less than 10 were about how the forum has gone downhill. The rest has either from "older posters" about how things have changed, it is inevitable but we can move on or from "newbies" about how nice the SPF has been since they've joined in the past few days/mths. Thats encouraging  AE has an excellent point about noting the high ratio of intro posts to goodbye posts. Its obviously easier to remember goodbye posts.

We have a new "old guard" which I've expected to emerge with time as the "older posters fade away" They for some reason seem to be spammers like Milamber  which would make sense since they appear more often.

The atitude of SPF players have obviously changed over the years. Initially, we have only been SP players, hence no B-net etc. Lately, there's been a large exodus of B-net people coming over to and hence a lot more rm for conflict has occured. Trading, dupes etc. There's been dupes from the beginning of the SPF. Even then, we did the same thing as we did now, isolate them and stop trading from them. Issue just got bigger since we've had an influx of new people.

General opinion of SPF is that most people still find a great place to be. Those few who don't for various reasons can do two things. Just fade away whatever your opinions or write a goodbye post, then disappear. I do suspect most of you still lurk even after that though  since some of you still come out to defend yourselves.

Finally, my $0.02:

I think this thread is an excellent example of a typical SPF thread. It is a potentially highly flamable topic, yet your wonderful (note the sucking up) moderater only posted once, without his mod stick even. The fact that this thread is 80% good stuff, 10% bad stuff and 10% just spam shows that our SPF is indeed going on the right track.

Finally, those of you who feel the SPF has changed, gotten worst, missed the old days etc, then go to the other place. If you don't know where it is, it's amazing what wonders google can do for you. I've just found it simply from hints dropped by the posts in this thread.

Oh, just to agree with Durf about my respect for Darkness who despite his strong opinions chose simply to go to Camelot or somewhere else. This thread wouldn't have occured if more followed his example.

An excellent thread indeed. There is a lot of good comments and content here, so I found it hard to go past without adding my own (which I hope to be as good).

Things around here have changed significantly since the introduction of 1.10, and, IMO, not all for the better. Change can be like that, but that is why a number of people who have been here for a while (and this doesn't necessarily mean that they are better people) have left with disparaging comments.

I'm going to try to keep this relatively short, as I do tend to ramble on a bit, so I will say that as I see it, one of the biggest changes is related to the influx of new members. This is not a bad thing. However, with the large amount of new members (1 or more per day, or so it seems, as compared to about 1 a week way back when), it is a lot more difficult to know who everyone is, and it makes it more difficult to keep such a strong sense of community as was here before.

Of course there is the other (negative) issue about hacks/dupes/cheats. This forum was established for the purpose of discussion about legitamate SP playing and trading. This purpose is still here, but with such a large influx of people, that small proportion who for some reason believe that they are great because they can hack and cheat become even more prominent, and this is a bad thing. I don't envy AE his task of dealing with all the crap that goes on, and I think he does a great job.

This forum is still very strong. This is a very active forum, and there is a continuing increase in the membership. Despite my activity at the other place, I still come here for most of my D2 needs.

What am I trying to say? Basically that this place is good. I don't spend as much time here as I used to, but that's mostly because of RL. I still enjoy playing in the tourneys here, I'm part of the ladder and try to help with any questions I am able to. This place no longer has a need for the 'Old Guard', and it has developed into a much more focused D2 forum.

I will, however, say that while I don't trade (for reasons of my own, such as the enjoyment I get on finding my own items), if I were to trade and to trade legitamately, I would be very careful with whom I traded. In fact, there are only a few people here that I would trade with, and they would be those who I have come to trust (based upon what I have read of their posts), and who I think are also similarly restrictive on who they trust. While this may sound elitist and biased against new members, this was pretty much one of the first things I read in the FAQ back when I joined - that if you're new, don't expect us to trade rare items with you until you have basically gained our confidence and trust. I think that this approach was a very successful one, and something I would like to see here.

One last note - just because you have all the best items doesn't make you respected. If you want respect or adulation, or any of that, then you'll have to earn it by carrying yourself the right way.

(I'm glad I kept it short - just imagine if I'd really let it go out  )

Nah, it's a good point. There are probably lots of people who just faded away and went to the Land of Wind and Ghosts over the years. We only remember who they are when we think really hard about things like "hey, haven't seen that guy post in a while . . ." I intend to disappear that way, when the time comes for me to do so. Well, except for April 1 threads.

Tibanglander faded from the SPF but still hangs out elsewhere . . . BAWW left but came back in other guise . . . the list does go on and on. I just like to pimp Darkness because he's a good role model to follow. Also he owns a sword and I might be in England this summer and I don't want to get cut to shreds, so I give him good press at every opportunity.

Well, it seems nearly everyone has posted in this thread except me, so it's time I did I think.

While DII is the only reason for the SPF existing, it is very clear that even if only 10 people still played Diablo that most of us would still post here simply because we all know what its like to love the playing and finding new items/getting Mat's and Pat's etc and like to help people out when they get stuck or need advice.

The RPG forums in general are quite civil in comparison to the B.Net forums, SPF especially and we have some very *special* people here :D.

I can see where some of you guys are coming from, I mean, you only have to check out the "Item Find" thread, page 21/22 to see the type of crazy stuff some people claim.

But on the whole I think the SPF is doing very nicely at the moment and lets hope it stays that way :)

Don't forget to visit the armoury when you're there  Darkness can show you the staircase full of Isenharts sets!

As far as i can see most of the problems with dupes etc might very well be because of the great number of new people joining. Which could have been expected with the release of a major patch.
I always like to think that those who dupe / hack will grow bored with the game soon enough and stop pestering the forum so things might turn better soon enough :) (i know i know, hope makes fools live in peace.. but still nice to have a positive thought)
But i also hope that not too many of the "older" posters will dissapear because it will take a lot of fun and motivation out of the game for me.
I think that by now things have already turned a bit better than a few weeks ago, just look at the responses when someone who never heard of legit sp asks for hacks an dupes, they are really quite pollite responses now as far as i see them (which is to say, not often as i tend to ignore those threads)

it's just a game, people are bound to grow bored with it and people come and go. Lets just hope not too many people grow bored with it any time soon :D and make it as nice a place as possible in the meantime

cheers, :drink:
Bart

ps. this entire story may very well have been posted in this thread already but i'm quite busy at work last weeks so don't have the time to read everything here :)
