The SPF Forum

I think CrazyChihuahua, Icebird, and Sincere said it best. Whatever some of you might think, there is some bad in this forum. There is still much good, but this forum doesn't have the 'vibe' the SPF once had. That 'vibe' (no I'm not a hippie) is now at the "Other Place"... forbidden by purediablo.com to mention. You guys aren't bad, but I too, like CrazyChihuahua, miss the people. The SPF back then was just great -- a relaxing, calm place to chat about whatever.

Nice play on words if you indeed meant it like that. ;)

Then have fun at the other place.

I for one will be happy if I never have to read another farewell thread tinged with the sorrow of "I have seen the light of the Trees of Valinor, now forever lost" in it. My utmost respect is still reserved for Darkness alone among those who left us, since he had the self-control to fade away gracefully, and without telling us--in polite language to be sure--that the crew here today frankly doesn't have what it takes to be a good forum.

as a relative noob, I have to say, the SPF is perhaps the best, most welcoming forum I have participating in during my long tenure as an internet/usenet/newsgroup/various film related websites message board poster. If there was some 'golden age' that is now gone then this place must have been the garden of eden of message boards.

A message board is only what you make of it. If you feel it is 'going to seed' then why not try to make it better? Have people come here looking for hacks? sure. do they get them? no. Is it the forum's fault people ask here for them? hardly.

I agree with some of the previous newbie posters who lament that vague references to some past golden age that the current crop of posters aren't living up to is rather disheartening. what was there then that isn't here now? and if you can find me another internet message board where a non-twenty-something lesbian can discuss a video game favored by adolecent males and never be treated as anything less than a fellow gamer, I wanna hear about it!

I am GG.

I'm one of the troublemakers, one of your new breed of insolence.

I didn't intend it to turn out that way. I come from an internet that mistrusts, hates, and despises me. I knew not love and compassion, not from a society of misfits, of so-called gamers, a dying breed of honor and integrity.

If I tarnish your glory, it is only because I am carried by the cold wind of change that is the Internet. If I post wrongly, it is only because I have not been taught right from wrong.

I know how to win, and I know how to have fun. The SPF is the first place that has shown me how to do both at the same time, and I intend to stay here until you kick me out.

I want to break new ground. I want to MP just once in my life. I want to TRADE. I want everyone to giggle as much as I do when the barbarian grunts.

"But I, being poor, have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams."

I left this place in that *blow up* about a year ago... but I decided to come back and test the waters again. :surprise:

One thing about here (that shames the other place) is the amount of activity. Holy smokes there's like 3 new pages every day  I really like that. There's always something interesting to read/look at.

I still enjoy playing this game (after 3 years) and like Thrugg, I'll be damned if I can find a game that I like as much. I haven't even installed WC3 yet...

I visit here, because I like to learn all I can about new strategies for 1.10. Based on my own experiences, I like to state my opinions from time to time too.

In regards to new members coming in waving their BotD's around, I prefer to give folks the benefit of the doubt. If there's something obviously fishy about the item, like an impossible item level, I just chuckle and move on.

In an honor based system, there is bound to be some small degree of dishonesty. How much is tolerable? For some people, it seems zero is the answer but I fear that will never be achieved in a large public forum like this. MP/trade/duel with the folks you have come to trust. That's really what it comes down to. Me, I prefer to keep it simple and just go solo and not trade. It's the only way to be sure when it comes to runes. Besides, if I found a Zod (or even an Ohm), I sure as crap wouldn't want to trade it.

Wowww!

When did all of this crap hit the fan?
When i first joined things seemed calm, not the torrential fury of flames placed down by people leaving. Now i know i havent been here since the beginning, ony since i left mp (it sucks) i got bored fast.

Truly I tell you, is this just a recent flare-up, or a sign to come?
I for one hope this is a brief "incident"
Oh and i gotta put in, dont beat me for this, but it might be that time in anythings evolution where new things have to come to center stage, not saying that what is happening is right, but mabye some people have to "catch up"

Well, i know it sounds bad but i can feel the distress in the posts. dont lose something that is so great!

There are a lot of good people still here. I must admit that. I try to keep my nose clean, as this place does provide a diversion from daily life.

However, I must admit that I am by no means a purist. It seems the lines are being drawn in the sand. The purists (to me, it seems) are becoming the "elite" and powerful. I don't trade. I don't have reason to. I build characters around what I have.

One thing that bothers me is that people WON'T LET THREADS DIE. That's right, threads asking for editors, threads with questionable equiptment, and general quasi-flame threads won't die. They spark much debate because, until they are locked, people feel compelled to post more and more concerning them. This, in a sence, is also creating a schism between some members.

I feel I have posted my opinions many times and I have no desire to regale you with them again. I'll be in the EMB if anyone needs me.

I've been here a goodly while, off and on, and I still think this forum is one of the friendliest, least flame-worthy places on the Net. I haven't noticed any real difference in the "vibe" now compared to what it was, say, a year or two ago--there are a few new members thanks to the 1.10 patch, but surely that's a GOOD thing?

I dunno. Maybe I should pay more attention to the trade threads, or something...

This is a dynamic community. That being said, I must illuminate the fact that the population of the Single Player Forum has adapted exceptionally to the changes that have taken place. We have successfully remained a cohesive unit through changes of Moderators, through numerous crashes, and through the coming of new members and the going of older, very well respected members. For those reasons, we should take pride in ourselves.

I have to say, i completely agree with you durf. I missed darknesses resignation, but frankly, several of the people 'leaving' recently have been really doing a disservice to so many of the new and moderatley new people here.

If your friends that hung out here have moved on, just say that, and don't go saying how much better the 'glory' days were. Quite frankly, there were no 'glory days' just different days. People here now are every bit as concerned about good chars and having a good time with D2 as then. we have so much good info, and a lot of good conversations and threads, just as much now as then, and as much teasing and friendlieness (milamber and stridjie win the spam awards, as noted)....

anyway, this is my last look in this thread, i'm finally annoyed with the topic, and it's normally the posters who say how things are 'different, not as bright shiny and new and fun' that really detract from my experience here. To all the newish posters that read- you guys rock, don't doubt it, and don't let what others say make you doubt it.

Well, as most of you know, I haven't been around pretty much at all lately, not after last january when I practically quit playing Diablo II. Notice the three last words there? Good, that's the idea.

Now, of course I could post here in all the different threads, with hints and tips for those who ask them, of course I could give out my opinions in each and every thread like I basically used to do when I was still actively gaming. But why should I really? I've lost track on the things here at the SPF, I've forgotten alot of stuff in D2 so most likely there's other people that can help alot better with the game now.

So why don't I post in the other threads, or the OT threads? Well, think of it how you will, but for me this forum is about the game, not about some other game I might be playing, not about my other hobbies, not about real life. Sure it's fun to come here every now and then and say hi to everyone and let some of the buddies here know how I'm doing, but really, is there anything else that's bonding that friendship than the game?

What I keep seeing here now when I log on is pretty much everything but the game. There's the same things going on than always, people asking for editors and such and then the flaming starts. Nothing's changed there, or has it? In my opinion yes...read more...

There's the people asking for advice with the game and they get their replies and help, nothing has changed here and this is the one thing that I hope will never change. This forum is about the information of the game, and sharing of it, once you stop sharing that information here, this forum simply dies or turns into something completely different. An OT forum to remember the old days...

So what's that change I mentioned? Well, even when I went inactive here in the forums, the signs were there. People who had stopped gaming completely or almost completely were the ones who replied the most. They always had their say in every issue. They were always the ones to start the witchhunts against the people alledgely cheating. I mean what's that? Is that fun for anyone? I think not...

Consider these forums as an extension to the game, they add alot to the game, information, buddies to play and trade with. If you're not having fun with the game anymore, even if you play Single Player only and not the MP games here. Then is there a specific reason for that forum member to spread his/her views on how the forum has changed when in reality that player has just grown bored of the game and that's what's causing the feeling of change.

Nothing's really changed here, sure people has left, new people have arrived here. Nothing new in that, people do that all the time no matter where you go.

What this old fart (who doesn't even play the game no more, or post basically at all *sigh*) would like to see, is that people would get their priorities straight here in these forums. Have fun gaming and don't take it too seriously, it's not everything life has to offer.

cool post... now GIB BOTD!!!oneoenoeeo

hehe sorry borry, couldnt resist ;) Hows everything with you? havnt see you in Ages

I quit playing Diablo II to, but i wont leave this place until i get kicked out.

I dont have much knowledge of the game, i dont know the inner workings of the game, but i try to give as much useful information as i can.

Since i dont trade or MF anymore, i dont have problems with item pack abusers and such.

Why cant we all just get along?

You summed it up pretty well Borlag, even made me make my first post in months here :D
<hijack>The baby must be almost there by now, everything ok?</hijack>

*Kicks Ultimater*

What else can I say? He saw that one coming :uhhuh:

I miss the old days.

I'm a noob to the forum. I've got one SP character, a 73 level HydraOrb sorc that none of my other chars can approach. Sure I twinked her up with giveaway stuff, but I'm sure all noobs have done so in the past. But the point is, something attracted me to the SPF forum. And honestly, I don't see much of a 'negative' attitude here. Those people leaving, I just ignore. They obviously don't have anything interesting to post. And I don't recognize them from my time here anyway. Vaya con Dios, I say! To the rest of you (strijdje, Milamber, and too many others to name) thanks for the warm welcome and great advice. I hope you stick around. If not, godspeed.

The SPF was (and still is) a group of like minded individuals that play one of the most enchanting (for me anyway) games ever produced. Those in the past, traded, played and spoke with each other often about the game and created a strong sense of community. There is no reason why this sense of community (which has suffered with so many leaving and joining) can not be recreated. All that is needed is for those to help each other with advice, deal honestly in trades, look out for your friends when things dont seem right and try and help the new people to fit in. When more of this happens people will get to know each other more, more trust will evolve and a 'new age' will form. Those who hack and cheat, will be caught out or leave through boredoom (as many already have ;) ).

Much of what has been said in the past is by those trying to maintain the honesty and trust of the forum. Those who speak out then leave because they think the forum is going down hill have their reasons, but they can always try to make a difference instead of giving up if they want to play in a legit community.
