Which I would gladly donate to bassen if he's planning on doing a build with it, I was given it by Jaedhann a while ago and have never found a use for it.

Let me know if you're interested, might have to let me know by PM though as I don't always get the time to check back here often and search through threads.

Re: The runeword Silence

Why so much negativity :( It's not like bassen doesn't know there are other runewords ...

Runes from trading have been piling up and I've been thinking for a while about Silence as well. I was planning on making a thread myself in the not-too-distant future. Here's what I think on the topic.

The +75 resall frees up a lot of gear slots that could go towards IAS, that makes up for the lack of speed in the base item unless the build relies on WIAS. The big resall also alleviates the problems 2-handers usually have with resists.

The obscene +33 hit blinds target (I first thought this was a typo ) shuts down monsters except within the small (2.6 yard) radius in which terror operates. This IMO seems to be perfect for a very defensive, slow killing build. Crusader bows can get to the X/3 Strafe breakpoint but, really, this is a runeword for slower attacks. You'll be able to build a Strafe powerhouse with Windy or upped WWS where you don't really need the defensive mods.

I want a weapon damage based build. For elemental damage builds, speed will trump +2 skills every time.

Weapon comparison:
1-hander (with shield): These builds don't have big resist problems, and Silence damage may be a little too low.
1-hander (for dual wielding): Definite possibility, but then, only barbarians will be able to use it
2-hander melee: Workable, but not for me :) Making both Beast and Kingslayer in 2-handed axes is enough even for someone with a 2h axe fetish.
Bows: This seems popular (among the two people who have made Silence so far ) Should be made in a +15% ED (or close) bow.

Also, all melee builds are going to suffer some degree of frustration chasing down terrified monsters.

Among bows, Crusader bows seem to be the only choice as they are one of only two bows that can get six sockets, and Hydra bows have the same speed and damage, yet have higher stat requirements. But I wonder. How about a choice out of left field: the Colossus Crossbow. If you thought Crusader bows were slow, take a look at the speed number for this one sometime, for a good laugh. Still, with IAS, they are not that slow.

Crusader Bow: 39 avg damage. 9fpa reachable in most cases.
Colossus Crossbow: 61.5 avg damage. 11fpa reachable with fanaticism or burst of speed. 13fpa reachable (or 14 without that much gear investment) for most other classes.

I'm leaning in favour of the crossbow, because of the builds I have in mind (it will also make me the only one here with a runeword in a crossbow ):

Magic Arrow bowazon (with slow, decoy, knockback aka "Medusazon")
Fanatic bow paladin
Bow assassin (with venom, shadow, BoS)
Hunter druid (wolves, HoW)

Killing with any of these builds is going to be slow no matter what you use, so safety in exchange for a little kill speed actually makes sense here. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I think it's workable. Unless I'm completely missing something.

The rogues won't appreciate my making it in a crossbow, but stuff them.

I don't have any sup bow/crossbow right now but it shouldn't take too long to find one. And in the meantime, I may also complete one or two of the various 'toons I already have.

Re: The runeword Silence

It figures. The best one for bows won't fit an Amazon bow. *sniff* But, I've often liked the idea of a bow like this for my Pallys. My pally builds are so Melee based. It usually hurts like hell when I have to weapon switch for something to hold off Mages IM curses or those $%#ing Undead stygians. It has to be a ranged attack.

The Resist all would drastically help the fact that my pally usually has about half of his resist in his shield. Loss of def is bad enough, without losing half my resists.

Since the primary use of it would be VS Undead. The extra VS undead attack/damage is just what the doctor ordered.

the +skills will boost my Sanctuary which will probably be preset with the bow in weapon switch. In the meantime. I might toss a Nef and Eld onto Witchwild until I can make one.

Re: The runeword Silence

I'm fairly certain that a buriza would be better for a fanatic ranger paladin. I mean, it has pierce AND freeze target.

I would so wish a legend sword had 6 sockets:whistling::whistling:

Hey wait, what if you put it in a phase blade and give it to a sword-ww barb, with a heavy hitting weapon in the main hand?

Re: The runeword Silence

it would still be outdone by, for example, grief ... or death (if you wanna stick with the vex theme) on a 5-socket pb

I hope you dont hope the 33 is a level of Dim Vision or something cast on striking, because its not. It only affects monster which was hit. Also, it does not cast terror, but it has chance to make monster flee. The mechanics are similar, but it does not cast necro curse, it affects only that one single monster hit ;)

Re: The runeword Silence

One of my many rune heresies was a Silence Great Poleaxe for my 1.10 Enchantress. My idea was to make a polearm enchantress using Energy Shield, with lots of mana leech to replenish mana as she got knocked around. With a Might merc providing a physical damage boost, it worked quite well, as long as the monsters were leachable and weren't doing massive amounts of elemental or poison damage. Act V Hell was pretty hairy, but until then it was pretty smooth sailing.

Good to know :) I read the strategy compendium description and the "level of DV ... max of 20" line before but failed to note that it only applied to the duration. That scuppers the slow attack, keep everything blinded plan.

If not Silence, what then? I have runes saved up for Chaos and Fortitude is the only other runeword that enables "something different". Well, kind of ...

This puppy has been sitting in my collection for years and was a gift from a parting friend from d2 long ago back in V1.09d. The really old members here might remember the name Draco.

I have used it once, on a fury druid who had a few resistance problems being shieldless so I used it on the druid mainly to say it has been used in anger, and while I was waiting for level 84 for some reason......

But yes, much better things to do these days with an Ist & Vex. But when you happen to own one from the old days, why the heck not take it for a drive every know and then?

Re: The runeword Silence

To be honest, there were a lot fewer ways to get a maxed resistance and +2 skills back then, which are probably Silence's greatest mods. These days, those both pale in comparison to Heart of the Oak for spellcasters and Death (massive ed) for melee classes.

Re: The runeword Silence

@ everyone . you have pointed out many interesting things about silence :) both good and negative :)

@ Joosh - thanks but I don't know yet what to build it in, but if I decide to go for a amazon I will contact you :) thanks ^^

Re: The runeword Silence

I used to have a silence phase blade on my FoH/Smite pally which was (and IMO still is) the best weapon for that combination. It's still decent for just smite, but grief has it covered by miles dmg-wise.
