The Exposure Tournament

Re: The Exposure Tournament

Yay for Ginger! Blaze sorcs are so much fun - nice to see that you could solve the troubles common for this build.

I handled Sarina´s pack exactly the same way in Nightmare with my Blaze sorc in the Gold Digger´s tourney.

I think it was the third time for me having seen Fangskin on the altar platform.

Regarding the nest pack: I had a great build to fight them. I can imagine it being very tough for a single target not-that-strong melee build to take them down while having a ton of Raptors swarming around them. For Faith, they simply died in numbers around her when she started to burn the nests. :)

Re: The Exposure Tournament

Ginger set out from the Frigid Highlands bent on vanquishing Baal for the last time. Along the way many enemies threatened to end her quest early, including some PI Frenzytaurs. Of course, PI means super easy for her.

This guy has no chance of victory against the conflagration he faces. A level 26 Blaze against these types of monsters is not fair.

Yetis also go down quickly against a Blaze sorceress. The Anya rescue was simply for giggles, as Ginger did not need the resists (except poison I suppose).

The Ancients proved to be a racetrack as you can see from the Blaze trail. Round and round until the FI Talic was the only one left, and Static/Orb him to death. The journey along the Ancient's Way to get to the door at the summit was 10x harder due to the CI Quill Rats. They don't move much so Blaze was useless against them and Ginger just grinned and bore the brunt of the missiles they shot at her.

Ginger unleashed her own surprise attack on these guys. Too bad Static Field couldn't work through the walls though or it would have been even worse.

Lister went down easily in a carpet of flames and as the victim of Lower Resist charges. The hardest boss at the end was Achmel, by far. He had an auto-curse aura of some sort that hurt pretty bad and reduced her fighting time.

The Baal fight took just a couple of minutes, and he dropped this.

Her end-game LCS.

The game decided to make things interesting by dropping the red portal directly inside the Cow King's Corral. He was LI/CI and eventually went down in a large carpet of Blaze flames, which is appropriate for this build.

She did not face Nihlathak or even go through Anya's portal in Hell, and did not rescue the Barbarians for Qual-Khek. Sorry boys, no time for you!
Same thing I did for Jimbo's journey. I didn't want anyone to get jealous...

Congrats Old Soldier, untwinked, shieldless, mercless sorcs are a very good achievement.

Re: The Exposure Tournament

Major cheers for Guardian Ginger!

Nice writeup, and some interesting fights. You don´t say much about the Worldstone Keep areas. I would have thought they could be very scary and dangerous for this build.

So, Lister´s fire immunity can be broken with a LR wand? Interesting.

CI quill rats - yeah, I understand that Ginger doesn´t like them. My Gold Diggers Blaze sorc will be able to take them, because she has a decent level Fire Wall for situations like this.

Also interesting that you chose such low strength. I wouldn´t want to be without my trusty 4-topazed Gothic Plate in Nightmare, especially with a mercless character like this. No siree.

I somewhat undestand why you avoided Pindle´s zombie garden. It is one of the scariest places in the game for a Blaze sorc. I´ve gotten one killed here - in Nightmare.

Your write-ups will be even more enjoyable if you would use direct links to the pictures. Faster loading (no animated ads and such) and the pics show up bigger for us.

Faith is many acts behind Ginger, but that doesn´t mean that her progress is boring and without excitement.

Here is my bat boss pack tactics. I wake up one of them at a time with Blade Fury. It flies over to me, where I cast CoS when it´s in the fire from the last victim. As a bonus, since the BF is with Riphook equipped, the bat is slowed and often bleeding as well.

I discovered that BF range isn´t as long as I thought. It´s not even a full screen. A few times I had to fire arrows (use Attack) with Riphook to reach a bat from afar.

Faith has gotten herself a much better main claw. Since it looks like I am not getting any MF jewels anytime soon (and certainly not more than two in one session!) I have added Blade Talons to my gambling routines. I scored a nice rare, with Fool´s and 6 seconds poison. Upgraded it to Greater Talons for some more speed and damage. AR with Phoenix Strike is now about 3900. I have ditched Dragon Claw as finisher. I can get into a much better rhythm when I use plain ol' Attack.

An excellent find in Forgotten Reliquary in Upper Kurast. A Flesh Hunter pack dropped this beauty. Until this point, Io was Faith´s highest rune. The Hell gear is starting to come together now. Treachery armor, and maybe I´ll use a circlet I gambled that has FRW and +2 Martial Arts. Or if I need more defensive abilities, I could use the Rockstopper that I also found yesterday.

The two Causeway temples had some really nasty situations. Ruined Fane had an early Champion archer pack (along with a few regular archers). There was a Ghostly among them as well. Nasty, nasty stuff! Normally, I can fight a Champion pack from the side, and usually manage to release a Meteor before they are ALL smacking me. Then I can move around the pack, rinse and repeat. Not so with these archer women. They hit me pretty much all the time. They did so much damage so quickly that Super healers weren´t enough. I had to use full rejuves, and several of them. The one thing that was nice was that once I had managed to drop a fire or two, I could dance around and avoid most arrows.

The other Causeway temple was also a real toughie. Some joker decided to drop a Champion beetle pack right by the entrance. And you probably know that each Champ has "followers" - two, I think. So it was wall-to-wall sardines the first meters in the temple. Plus an archer pack behind them. Fun...

Well, panicking won´t do me any good. I cast CoS to shut up the archers. Drank a rejuve, managed to hit a beetle four quick times, releasing two Meteors. Faith´s lighting resist isn´t bad (59) but of course it still hurts when a whole bunch of beetles is spewing out bolts. Combine that with the Champs' powerful attacks, and I had to drink a bunch more rejuves. I also popped out and in of the exit a couple of times.

I tried to take a screenie at this time, but failed at it. This foolhardy attempt actually caused me an NDE! Sometimes it´s hard to be a warrior and a journalist at the same time...

I was now down to five full purples. I have lots more in the ATMA stash, but those aren´t any good now. I cubed a small purple from a chippie, and two full purples from mid-sized gems.

I knew several beetles remained, so I cast a blind Mind Blast as soon as I entered. At least one beetle got converted, which had the good effect that this beetle took most of the following archer arrows. When I tried to attack a beetle to get more fires going, I must have clicked on a converted one. Faith started to run around the pack, then BAM! She was stuck in the corner! I nearly panicked, but thankfully, all Champion beetles were already dead. A CoS stopped the archers again, and I went to work on the remaining foes with all types of PS sharges. A cold charge gave me lots of safety, and two lightning charges got all the archers down. Only stragglers left now.

Check out that corpse-and-junk pile. What a great fight! Sometimes I really love this game.

And good work on your progress jiansonz, keep it up!

Re: The Exposure Tournament

You don´t say much about the Worldstone Keep areas. I would have thought they could be very scary and dangerous for this build.

WSK was far easier than Ancient's Way, which was the biggest challenge for her in act V. Somehow I got Horror Mages (not immune to anything) and Claw Vipers (not immune to anything) in WSK2, and witches (one CI, one PI) in two levels. I got poison immune Megademons in one level, and lots of the Torment worm maker types in the same level. Just not hard. No extra fast frenzytaurs, no flayers, no undead dolls, absolutely nothing challenging enough to even take a picture. I certainly didn't full clear the levels because I couldn't compete with Sequana on points and I lost my full clears in NM.

So, Lister´s fire immunity can be broken with a LR wand? Interesting.

No, if you look closely the LR effect is over him but he's still FI and LI. It just made the Orbs that much more effective (like another 6 levels of cold mastery, really)

Also interesting that you chose such low strength. I wouldn´t want to be without my trusty 4-topazed Gothic Plate in Nightmare, especially with a mercless character like this. No siree.

I never got much MF with Ginger, and it showed, especially in hell difficulty. I also don't recall ever seeing a 4 os armor anything in her entire journey. I was pretty stoked that the blue one she used got two sockets when Larzuk got his hands on it, but by the time I made it half way through hell, I had found the runes for a Lionheart so I could have gone that direction if necessary. I chose to keep it for the style.

Your write-ups will be even more enjoyable if you would use direct links to the pictures. Faster loading (no animated ads and such) and the pics show up bigger for us.

Consider that change made. I'm just falling farther and farther behind any hope of tech savvy anymore. And my degree is EE!

As for your Phoenix Striker, How hard is it to get the charge you want? Isn't fire charge 1? And if you're using dual claws, you swing pretty fast and usually hit, right? Phoenix Strike is a great skill but I had trouble using it to get the charge I wanted with dual claws... Hints?

Ah, a good and complex question.

First things first. Using dual claws is almost the same as using one weapon for Phoenix Strike. It´s only the claw that´s equipped first (or the one on the left side after weapon switching) that you swing with when you use Phoenix Strike. You can only get one charge per swing (unlike FoF, CoT and BoI, which can score two charges with one use of the skill).
Second claw seems to add at least CB, even when you do not hit with it. And of course +skills and such.

When I use Attack for finisher, claws alternate (and weapon speed is the average of the two claws, I think).

Meteor is the main charge I use. I hold down left button on a monster, then I switch between PS and Attack (about once every 0.25 seconds) several times while still holding down left button. If done right, this will cause about two Meteors per second to rain down. It´s the stacked flames that deal most of the damage.

Of course, the success will depend on how often I am able to hit the monsters, and some monster types are annoyingly good at blocking...

If I happen to Hit, Miss, Miss, Hit in my sequence, I will still get a Meteor. :D

Sometimes, when it´s important that I do not screw up during the next couple of seconds, I may click only once with PS, see if I hit (or hear if I hit, if there are lots of flames or monsters obscuring the view). If I do not hit, click with PS again. When I do hit, switch to Attack and hack away until I hear that I´m hitting or hear a 'Meteor is coming' sound.

There is also the thing about hit chance vs. speed. If I am really good at hitting (e.g. I am using an ITD weapon when fighting regular monsters) I can just play as if I am hitting the whole time. Works pretty well.

If I am bad at hitting, I can´t take advantage of really fast attack speed. In this case, it´s best for me that the attack speed isn´t higher than I can actually react to when I am hitting, and switch skill according to this.
(This approach is more the 'poor man´s version', useful in really tough tournies when I want to use a decent level Fade anyway).

When I want the ice charge (generally for crowd control), I often swing at the first monster (the others haven´t quite mobbed me yet!) 4-6 times with PS. That usually gives me 3 charges.

For killing FI (or highly fire resistant) monsters, I need to spam the 2nd charge. This is often not that easy, but sometimes I do it pretty well. Depending on the situation, it may not matter much if there is a little fire and ice flying in there as well. It may even help a bit. Especially the ice.

Also, if a a dual claws PS character really wants lightning and nothing else, she can use Claws of Thunder instead. The light show is not as pretty as the glorious 2nd PS Chain Lightning Storm, but whatever gets you through, right...

I usually plan ahead, too. If there is only one monster left, standing in flames, and it´s going to die soon, I use this monster to charge up for the next monster group. I usually want one or three charges. Then I can bring this over to the next fight and start using Attack until I hit. This came a lot more into play with v1.13, which almost doubled the time you keep charges.

Re: The Exposure Tournament

What kind of weird weapon is that?, you might ask. It´s a 'Black' Maul, and Blade Fury-ing with it (using up two columns of mana potions) took Mephisto down to about 15% life.

I admit, I am a bit scared of going melee with NM and Hell Mephisto. He has never killed me in NM, but he´s hit me several times much MUCH harder than I thought he was capable of. Now I am not surprised anymore. The physical damage from Diablo and even Duriel are sweet caresses in comparison. Only Andariel (and maybe Baal) can come up with something similar on single physical hits. In Hell, Mephisto has killed one of my Phoenix Strikers, and she had lots of life and 75% blocking.

Nevertheless, I decided to not be a wuss, fly over to him to finish him off. I had confidence in my 900+ life and good supply of full purples.

I did wuss out of fighting Mighty Hephasto. Now that I had a perfect parking spot, why not take advantage? This was BF with a 'Strength' Blade Talons in secondary hand. It took a while to wear him down, but it worked nicely. Thanks to the mana steal and OK physical damage on my main claw, I could have used Blade Fury forever without running out of mana.
Um rune from Hellforge. Now that´s interesting - I have some ideas for it.

Faith really does not like Cold Enchanted mobs. They hurt her and make her far less effective when her attacks are slowed so much. Against the Infector, I used every bit of help I could find: thawing potions, a Resist Cold Shrine and a nice bottleneck.

Against Diablo, I switched out one of my rejuve potions columns for Thawing potions, and drank from them when Diablo chilled me. It was a pretty easy fight. I needed only one town trip for potions refills.

Re: The Exposure Tournament

Thanks for the tips on PS. Maybe that's why I stick to FoF, but now that I have a MA assassin in another tournament I'll have to try it a bit more. Those meteors do look cool. Why did you decide to switch from Dragon Claw back to regular attack? I understand rhythm but wouldn't the DC release twice as many meteors (assuming you can get both attacks to strike)?

Good progress, keep it up!

Re: The Exposure Tournament

It will never release charges twice, the game doesn't allow it.

Yea I don't understand the normal attack either. Personally I like to go with at least a level 4-5 Dragon talon, because you really need the AR bonus so that you can actually hit.

Nice progress too! I always love to see the awesome MF gear you have amassed by the end of NM!

This is an interesting suggestion. The AR bonus sure gets big fast with this skill. Since I plan on having several +skills (there is already +4 on my stashed gear for Hell), the AR for DTalon will be at least on par with Phoenix Strike.

I decided to try it out in the last part of Bloody Foothills. For the first time ever, I mapped a kick skill to the left button, so I could use it like I use Attack with PS. Result: I ran out of mana really fast...

Well, OK, I have mana steal on my claw, and upgrading my rare boots to exceptional for the next session made DTalon much better at not gobbling up all my mana. I mapped back Attack to the A button, but put DTalon on the S button (replacing Tiger Strike that I´m not using anymore) so I can have quick access to either skill. For taking out Fire Towers and such, Attack is far superior because you can´t leech from the towers, I need about 6 Meteors to take them down and they have no Defense (so Attack hits just as well, needing only 4 mana for a cycle instead of 14...).

What´s my verdict for PS-DTalon now? In short, I do not like it. :(

I don´t know, it just feel so...messy (for the lack of a better description). Not only do I need to cope with the crazy screaming and the different attack speeds, I also have to either freeze the pack first (granted, something I often do anyway for safety reasons), make sure something is behind the monster I kick, or I need to follow after the knocked back monster to attack it again. If I happen to knock back the monster twice, it´s no longer in the radius of the initial Meteor flames. Not good.
In most other tournaments (where you have Shadow and merc), this could maybe have worked, but not here.

In short, using DTalon adds so much micro-management and so many little things I need to keep track on that it gets much harder to maintain my overall control and feel for the situation. It gives me less time to keep track of things like:

"Are there more monsters arriving?"
"Did that one get frozen by ice shards or not?"
"About one second to go until it´s time for a CoS recast."
"I should move over and hit that monster instead for better placement of my next lightning burst!"
"I will soon need a Mind Blast to push that boss back because it looks really painful to tank."

Phoenix Strike and Attack look and feel exactly the same. Same swing, same attack speed. I am sticking with this. I was wrong in my last post. AR with Attack was 1900, not 1200. If I can add another 1000 AR for the late game, I will be fine in this department. I know some players think 8000 AR is low, but 3-4000 is plenty good enough for me. I guess my whole way of handling the fights takes the risk of substantial whiffing into account.

Horror Archers in Abbadon are some of the most dangerous critters in the game. They chill and do heavy poison damage. CoS and PS freezing were crucial here. I still had to do many quick retreats, and go back for potion refills. This dude was the worst of the bunch.

I have a new BF switch weapon: The Meat Scraper. Decent damage (but I know I only get 3/8 of it), big OW and some MF. I had to wait for a level-up to use it, as I needed one more point in STR.

Faith had a nasty situation in Crystalline Passage. She got cornered by two early Champion Infidels, the ones that use Zeal and do cold damage. I tried desperately to use Mind Blast to break free. After consuming half of the potions in my belt, I realized I had spammed MB on the wrong spot. Moving the cursor two centimeters did the trick. I ran back up the stairs and cast a TP next to Thresh Socket (I killed him last session, so I had just run past him this time). When I got downstairs again, only one of the Infidels found me. I had now buffed with thawing potions, but it was still a tough fight.

"Good choice of claw type, Anya, but that´s clearly the wrong skill tree."

I found a decent rare Greater Claws, though. Some good AR bonus and +2 to Phoenix Strike.

The little obstacle between Faith and this boss was great. The boss can´t hit her, and it is too stupid to go around the obstacle. I backed away and took his last bit of life with BF. Appropriate boss name - getting caught in the explosion could have been a Doom Bang indeed. I don´t know how much FE explosion have been toned down in the current patch, but why take chances if you don´t have to?

I brought too few potions to the Ancients fight. Not too few to make it through, but too few for comfort. I had my Teleporting staff, which got me to a one-on-one fight with Spectral Hit Talic. He hit pretty hard with his whirling. When he was defeated, I had only 3 healing potions and 4 rejuves left. LE Korlic demanded the use of the healing potions, and Stone Skin Madawc must have had strong weapons because I needed 3 of the rejuves against him. Phew!

I realized I had forgotten my Strength claw in the stash, so I stopped at the last waypoint. The distance from WP to exit isn´t too long, but it may be a tough gauntlet to get past the monsters now. I hope to use semi-fast but controlled progress, with CoS, Mind Blast and Dragon Flight to make my way past them.

Re: The Exposure Tournament

Lister was extremely painful to fight. I could damage him, slowly, with fire, and my poisonous claw kept him from regenerating, but I wanted to have some rejuves left for the Baal fight. So I ran laps around the place and took him down with Meat Scraper bleeding. Geez...so slow and boring.

Baal was a much more fun fight. As usual, a Strength weapon was a great tool to help shorten the fight.

In the cow level, Faith met her first enemy that was immune to both her main damage types. I used the small corral and ran laps around it and took down the boss with, you guessed it, Meat Scraper bleeding. I needed 17 laps...

Preparing for Hell, I now sold all the 30k+ gold items I had been hoarding and went on a huge gambling spree. Faith got new gear in all slots except for the belt.

My plan is to rely on Treachery´s Fade for resists (15% PDR is also nice :) ). Hopefully I can find wussy monsters or traps to get it going for the fights where I need it. Once it triggers, it lasts for almost five minutes.

Since Fade is the plan, I need to break free from the need of Burst of Speed. In fact, I have removed BoS from the hotkeys so I don´t accidently cast it in a hectic fight. That means I need good FRW on the gear, and IAS. With the big IAS bonus on the armor, only 15% more is needed to reach the final breakpoint when using Greater Talons. My first plan for the foot speed was a rare circlet with 30% FRW and +2 Martial Arts. This would have let me use my current dual resist and MF boots. However, Gheed produced an even juicier circlet. I figured that if Larzuk could be so kind and roll 2 sockets for it, it would be pretty much an ideal piece of headgear for Faith. And Larzuk came through!

So now I needed to get some fast boots with at least one good resist, preferrably more. After I had gambled away a few millions on boots and made 10 failed attemts at Safety boots crafting, I decided to go Anya shopping in Nightmare. (I had avoided the Halls of Pain waypoint for this eventuality). Apart from boots, I kept an eye out for good gloves and claws.

With the resists from boots, rings, armor, one claw, charms and runes socketed in the circlet, I now had the freedom to go completely nuts with + Martial Arts gear.

Stats for Hell.
Add 60% Resist All once Fade triggers.
Blocking is at 49%.
AR with Attack is 2760 with main claw and 905 with secondary claw. It´s 800-something on my Blade Fury switch (yuck!)

Primary Gear
* Kenshi´s Circlet of the Vampire, 'OrtThul' (<-thanks, big guy!)
* Kenshi´s Amulet
* Rare Greater Talons with Fool´s, 30% IAS and 20% Resist Cold
* 'Treachery' Cuirass (I had hoped to find some low quality Dusk Shroud (to normalize and cube-socket) in late NM, but that didn´t happen)
* Kenshi´s Blade Talons
* Kenshi´s Gauntlets of Charged Bolt
* Rare ring with 22% Fire Resist, +3 DEX, +100 AR and +74 mana (<- I love this ring!)
* Crafted Mesh Belt with +51 life, 10% OW, 10% FHR and 3% life steal
* Rainbow(10) Ring
* Amber(33) Greaves of Acceleration

Charms taking up 22 inventory spaces giving resists, +life and around +100 AR

* On switch: 'Black' Maul

And finally, a pic showing Faith´s pretty impressive Phoenix Strike numbers. The lightning synergy is maxed and the fire synergy has 11 points.

Death Sentry is now ready to clean up a ton of Fallen corpses in Act I Hell. It´s level 5+2.

Conqueror Faith, dual claws Phoenix Striker, level 75, Hell Blood Moor next

Re: The Exposure Tournament

Belated congratulation on second Guardian OldSoldier!

(I can lead the table, but the winner of this tourney is here :).)

And nice progress for Faith too. I try to monitor this thread still, there are really impressive achievements here.

Re: The Exposure Tournament

Will be joining this wth a Tiger Strike + Dragon Tail Assasin called Merciless_Pain. Probably will add blade fury for utility and maybe Venom for another source of damage, lets see how it goes.

Re: The Exposure Tournament

Well so far Merciless_Pain has cleared everything including Black Marsh, Cloak of Shadows is a really useful spell. Also found the usefulness of Blade Sentinel to kill packs of monters, cast a couple run around, loot what's left. Topaz luck has been awful so far, got my 5th chipped topaz at the fifth level of the Dark Tower... Only S/U found were the shield from Hsarus, irony... and the Axe of Fechmar from the Countess itself. The countess dropped an Eth and a Nef. The good thing is that an Assasin is full of 1 point wonders, so far have only spent 1 point in Tiger Strike, as most of them went into prereqs...

Merciless_Pain, level 16, Black Marsh

Re: The Exposure Tournament

I am back to forums and D2. I will give this a go. But be warned! I am not a good player :D

I will play with Barbarian.

Re: The Exposure Tournament

Are we allowed to do double posts in these tournament threads? I am trying my luck since I noticed other people have done that.

I started the tournament and I am really struggling :D I am just not familiar with playing in HC. I managed to clear the first part of the map + The Den of Evil and found the first (second) waypoint. I also get rid of Blood Raven and soon after that the merc. It was hard to watch and wait for her to die.

Here is also a small gameplay video from clearing The Den of Evil (includes NDE) in case someone is interested. I can also upload these in future if someone likes to watch.
