The Exposure Tournament

Re: The Exposure Tournament

I finally made through Act 1. Exciting things failed to happen. At this rate, I might make it to A3 before next year. Probably not though.

Re: The Exposure Tournament

I've determined why I been struggling. It appears the slowness of act i and ii have boredom tendencies so I get rush crazy and tackle things without retreating. Recipe for deeds I'm certain. So to combat my issues I'll be taking breaks more often.

Reminder my Internet access may be suspended in December due to complications. So I'll be fore going any further entries until I know for certain I can participate without interruption.

Re: The Exposure Tournament

Played a ton today since I won't be able to play for a week and killed Baal. Played the whole act on P8, except for Ancients at P1. Baal must have taken about a half hour to kill, but oh well. Had a few NDEs where my life got dangerously low because I thought I could handle bosspacks of frenzytaurs easier than I actually could. One pack was extra strong, and I couldn't taunt the boss and he took away about 400 life per hit which was quite painful. However, the tides turned when I went on a power gambling spree and after about 50 magic mauls, I got a keeper. Saw three good mods, and didn't have the patience to try and gamble a better one. Upgraded it to this, which did more than twice what I was using (and had been using since act 2).

Soul Flange
War Club
Two Hand Damage: 87 - 149
Durability: 47 of 60
Required Level: 30
Required Strength: 124
Fingerprint: 0x9f14d1b
Item Level: 44
Version: Expansion 1.10+
+10% Increased Attack Speed
66% Enhanced Damage
+20 to Maximum Damage
+150% Damage to Undead
Required Level +5

The other noteworthy find I had was a 12 resist all GC. Was quite surprised to see that. WW and BO are both at level 19, I'm not quite sure what I should put points in after maxing those. I don't want to commit to a mastery yet, just in case I find a bomb unique, though I plan on using Mauls as much as I can. Maybe I'll try and max War Cry or Taunt. Once I upgraded my weapon and got WW to about 15, it was finally an efficient killer. It's no powerhouse, but it's a welcome change from swinging at each individual monster at painfully slow speeds. My lack of AR is reaching critical mass, I'm about to the point of investing in dex to help out, it's that bad. Next stop is the Cow level and then on to NM!

Re: The Exposure Tournament

It’s amazing how much work has been eating into my Diablo II time  . However, I’ve made some progress so I guess it’s about time for an update.

I’d posted before that I’d be reentering with a Fanatic Zealot and indeed I did create one . . . Hector the Mighty (then Concentrating) Zealot cleared out Act 1 at Players 7. Everything was super easy and yet I couldn’t see the character going anywhere good . . . sooner or later Hector (as Frost-Fang the Fury Druid had before him) would get surrounded, and then would be unable to damage or leech his way out of trouble . . . so I decided to create another character . . . a better character . . .

And so Hester the Frozen Orb/TK/Fireball Sorceress was created. I’d created a Classic Sorceress (so, no merc) using this build for the last Ladder Reset and had pretty good success (a multi-shut Oblivion Knight deeded her in the Hell Chaos Sanctuary) . . . so, I thought it would be interesting to see how the same character (still not using a merc) performed in the Expansion  .

Act 1 went pretty well at Players 7 and can be summed up by “You’ve not enough mana!” (in the Protoss narrator voice) . . . or at least that’s what I supposed the game would be saying if I played with sound. Fireball got every skill point that didn’t go to a prereq and wiped out everything (including, and mostly, Hester’s mana).

Hester had pretty good topaz luck and succeeded in getting her chipped topaz cap and ring mail armor up and running really early (by the Stony Field I recall) and was rewarded with . . . nothing! . . not one set/unique or useful rare . . . but, that’s not to say Act 1 was a total disaster in terms of item finding. The Countess (done at Players 1) dropped a Ral Rune (meaning Hester would get to create a Leaf Staff at the beginning, and not the end of Act 2)!

Speaking of creating a Leaf Staff, after defeating Andariel Hester headed to Lut Gholein and started shopping at Drognan’s. A +2 to Fireball, 2 socketed staff was spotted after ten minutes (but I really wanted +3 to Fireball), ten minutes later I spotted the most amazing base for a Leaf I’ve ever seen (but despite saving all my money from the Countess on . . . I didn’t have anywhere close to enough gold to buy it . . . curse you superior base . . . and why can’t I find this stuff when I’m shopping with a high level character . . . oh well). After about an hour of shopping (let’s hear it for watching tv while ‘playing’), I spotted and purchased this staff. A Tir Rune dropped on the way to Radament and Leaf was created! The sudden +6 to Fireball was a huge boost to damage and a moderate boost to the mana problem, but, what are you going to do . . . well besides stuff your inventory full of mana potions.

Act 2 was cleared at Players 7 with no real problems. Unravellers were annoying but what else is new. I was a bit concerned about Duriel but the concerns turned out to be totally unfounded. Hester simply walked up to the big bug and static’ed him/she/it to Death’s Doorstep and then finished with a few Fireballs . . . couldn’t have been any easier or faster.

Duriel didn’t drop anything handy and neither did anyone else but some set/uniques did start to drop and included: Cleglaw’s Small Shield (Stony Tomb Level 2), The Diggler Dirk (Halls of the Dead Level 3), Berserker’s Helm (Ancient Tunnels), Cathan’s Mask (Tal Rasha’s False Tomb), Hsarus’ Chain Boots (Tal Rasha’s False Tomb), Isenhart’s Broad Sword (Tal Rasha’s True Tomb). The best rune drop was a Ral Rune from the Canyon of the Magi (and yes, I’m pretty happy I got to create a Leaf long before then).

Here were Hester’s stats at the end of Act 2.
(and here’s at the end of Act 1 if you’re interested).

Re: The Exposure Tournament

When Umbriel found the smith, she told him he'd been a very bad boy, and that he should go stand in the corner and think about what he's done. He didn't want to, so she bent him over a couple of wine barrels and spanked him.

She then proceeded to find Andariel and spank her too. She was also very naughty, and didn't drop anything useful.

At the beginning of Act II, she decided to use her socket quest on a repeating crossbow of ilvl > 40, so it would get 5 sockets. Then she popped in 3 Eths and a PSkull, thinking to put another PSkull in as soon as she could get one. Eventually she ended up putting a Shael in the last slot, and was quite pleased with the speedup. The Eths turned her terrible AR into really good AR.

She had an NDE due to a CE FE beetle, whose minions also had painful sparks. It was not the first time that beetles would shock her this act, although ironically it wasn't the lightning that was the problem. Her other resistances were low, so CE or FE beetles could be quite damaging. DTail has a 4 yard AoE, so she had to stop kicking very quickly if the sparks were actually damaging her (just lightning was not much damage, certainly not something her life leech and maybe a potion couldn't fix easily).

Ironically, Wall of the Eyeless dropped in the maggot lair, just as she was cursing her lack of mana leech and MPK. Since she couldn't use it, she continued to curse, and funded the townsfolk's booming mana potion business.

She was a bit nervous before facing Fangskin, and it turned out to be with good reason. She was slaughtering her way around the altar, then got to Fangskin, and the sparks really hurt. She ran, picking off the rest of his minions as she went, but she made it to the altar, where he couldn't get to her, and she decided to take a look at his mods.
Fangskin was CE, which explained the hurtiness. She used her crossbow as a crossbow, for once, and the envenomed bolts made short work of him from the safety of the altar.

After Fangskin, she decided to drop the /players setting down from 5 to 3.

She found a Lem in the palace. No really scary moments, except for one, when she was trying to kill off too many things at once, had nearly run out of mana potions, and then Fire Eye and his minions came out of nowhere and made a real nuisance of themselves. After running off to town for a belt refill, he was easy, but like too many times in this act, her mana leech just wasn't enough, and she'd run out in the middle of a fight in which she was wiping the floor with everybody and have to run off with her tail between her legs again.

At some point after Fangskin and before the canyon of the magi, she took some time out and worked on her gear a bit, making some crafts and gambling, mostly to try to get her resistances up. It worked pretty well. Also, as she was trying to gamble a set of rare greaves so that she could up them to war boots, she gambled a set of magic war boots with 32 fire res and half freeze duration. That was better than her rare battle boots, so she decided not to up anything and just wear them.

She began the false tombs, and very soon after starting, she leveled up and finally put her first point in death sentry. She was very glad, too, as the highly fire resistant skeletons in the tombs being constantly revived by unravelers were a huge pain. Not only could she damage them with death sentries, she could also remove their corpses!

At this point, she started getting overconfident. The only thing that could slow her down was running out of mana, and it was only slowing her down. At this point, she should have said to herself, "wait a minute, you're getting overconfident, in hardcore, without a merc or a summon, and with a build that you know for a fact can die easily with no warning." But she didn't say that to herself. She said, "Hahahahaha! I have death sentry! I'm invincible! Eat exploding corpses, evil dead things!"

In the last false tomb, she came upon a room full of the burning dead and unravelers, so she dropped a couple of death sentries behind her and charged into the middle of the room, kicking things as she went. She killed a few, but there were more than she'd thought, and she'd thrown caution to the wind. Before she knew it, she was surrounded. OK, she thought, I'd better back off now. Panic had not yet set in.

DTail has a 4 yard radius of knockback, and when you can kick fast enough, you can sometimes get yourself out of being partly surrounded just by kicking things away from you. However, if something gets knocked back, but doesn't have room to move, it will just go into hit recovery where it is. She kicked. Kick kick kick. There were a lot of them, about 2 or 3 deep, in every direction. They weren't moving. She couldn't make a hole to run through. Unravelers in the shadows were shooting hurty unholy bolts at her, and she couldn't move to dodge. No way out. No way out. Panic set in.

She had entered the room with a full belt of potions, the first row reds, the middle two rows fat purples, the last row blues. At about this point she ran out of reds. Purple. Oh crap. Purple. Previously, she had just been opening her inventory and clicking her tome of town portal, and hadn't assigned a hotkey to it. She opened her inventory with one hand, and drank her belt with the other. She stopped kicking, so they were hurting her faster now. PurplePurplePurple. Her other hand found the tome and a portal opened. It was at least a yard away from her. I'll never make it, she thought, too far away. I'm dead. She tried anyway, hoping to touch the blue oval even with just her finger. PurpPurpPur--

She was in Lut Gholein, poisoned, and nearly dead. I was shaking. She ran to the townsflolk for healing, then looked at her belt. It was completely empty. "Mental note: " she said to herself, "don't go back in that portal." She has a hotkey for town portal now.

She went back into that tomb via the waypoint, and cautiously, carefully cleared out the room she'd nearly died in. There were no further incidents of a life-threatening nature, but one of the skeletons that had been swarming her dropped a Ko, almost as if the game were sorry for putting me through all that.

The game's newfound kindness didn't last long. Shortly after, it dropped a Visceratuant to taunt me.

By the time she got to Duriel, she had almost, but not quite, leveled up. She had also found a couple of +life GCs, which she couldn't quite fit into her inventory for questing, since she needed a place to hold things to sell, but she did use for Duriel, giving her about 50 extra life. She prepared to face Duriel, mostly by drinking a lot of thawing potions. He was a bit rough, in that he made her return to town for potions (via hotkey this time) several times, but there was no real danger. Unlike his usual miserly self, Duriel dropped a Hawkmail! CBF! He also made her level up.

Overall, the act was quite good to her. She improved her resistances quite a bit, upgraded her boots by a bit, and got a Lem, a Ko, and a Hawkmail. She also escaped alive from the scariest NDE I've ever had.

Her skills are max DTail and Venom, 14 BoS, 1 DS, 2 Fireblast (the next point will go here for the extra shot on DS). Stats are Str: 165, Dex: 50, Vit: 140.

Re: The Exposure Tournament

I was amazed how fun it was to clear excess tombs with this guy. From what had went to almost hate of the game and character became one of the most fun ways ever to clear the tombs. Last barbarian I played was ages ago so this was a relearning experience. The ability to leap attack the Unraveller and howl to keep the others off of me then rinse and repeating it for the other Unravellers in the room until none were left then it was leap back to entrance drink the health pot and continue to conc away. Having a 1-2 cold dam small charm lets me break lot of corpses as well in case the room seems to crowded like it did a few times.

Duriel was easier than I expected figured no block constantly frozen would equal scary. I underestimated the power of war cry. Keep that up conc drink a few reds and this what was left.

On to Act III BloodQuencher goes.

Re: The Exposure Tournament

Slow going in Act 5, but I did ramp the players setting back up again. ;) Managed to make an 'Edge' in a Short War Bow (not the best base, but I'm sure I'll find another Amn before I find a 3os exceptional bow). Never before did I realise how many bloody Animals there are in A5. I really, really, really hate Crush Beasts right now.

I also have a 2os circlet and an Ort + Sol, but I hesitate to make 'Lore' due to gambling this baby:
Code:
Death Visage
Circlet
Defense: 41
Durability: 35 of 35
Required Level: 29
Item Version: 1.10+ Expansion
Item Level: 37
Fingerprint: 0x2c14dee1
+33% Enhanced Defense
Damage Reduced by 3
Magic Damage Reduced by 3
All Resistances +12
8% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
30% Faster Run/Walk
That 30 FRW is soooo nice. Currently sporting Vidala's Fetlock, which with that circlet gives me nice mobility, something very valuable when you are a Zon without a tank. The +1 skills from Lore would nicely buff my Passives though, which are equally as important to Vanessa's survival.

I had one NDE. One of the A5 pits had a Frenzytaur boss pack right near the portal, which left me no room to retreat, and thus prevented me clearing the area (curses!!!). Now I've got my 'Edge', my next goals are another 'Edge' in a better base, and then 'Harmony' on switch (FRW, Animal killer) and a Treachery armour. The Edge/Harmony/Treachery combo is Hell-viable if you can find Elite bases for the two bows. The usual minor drawback with a ranged character wearing Treachery (getting Fade to trigger) won't apply in this tournament, and the Venom damage will help with PIs (not to mention the elemental damage on the Harmony bow). May be able to get away with Magic Arrow with Venom + Harmony as a PI solution, freeing 21 points I was planning on spending on FA to buff the Passive skills. Probably will still use a 1-pt FA (with a few cold charms for duration) as a way of making things stand still in Hell.

Re: The Exposure Tournament

Checking out Akara in nightmare produced a nice replacement weapon swap Necromancer wand with extra skills in decrepify, confuse and attract. Setting to at p5 a fast clearance produced a sol rune in the Stony Field to make the obligatory Lore. The first of several shaels soon several followed, the countess providing the second, picking up a 25mf ring in the tower on the way, with the nastiest encounter in the Tamoe pit of 2 triple shot archer packs, one with fanaticism and another might enhanced rogue between them demolishing bonewalls nearly as fast they were going up.

Injudicious use of bone prison on Pitspawn brought in 2 inquisitive multishot mages from miles away as a reminder to improve fire resistance sooner rather than later and a dol rune fell in the catacombs before the act boss perished entombed in bone.

Crafting a casterbelt and gloves at this point gave poor results but gambling a million gold finally produced this fine circlet, replacing the lore, with the handy 20 fcr on this headgear allowing a bit of shuffling with jewelry to improve resists and mf but keep the 75 fcr breakpoint.

Radamant was easily done and a Stony tomb clearance gave up a razorswitch but this was stashed. A lum dropped in the maggot lair clearance followed by a hel in the Halls of the Dead, a third shael in the palace and finally the much desired io from the chests on the last leg of the Sanctuary clearance which also produced a 2nd dol.

The wand shopped in normal was cube socketed and +8 'white' put to great effect in the tomb clearances with poor Duriel expiring at p1 with only two blues quaffed.

Progressing through act 3 like a very sharp item through very soft cookies, with bone prison skill finally maxed giving a 605 bone armour and hefty ~1.2k spear damage damage, Lower Kurast was reached without incident with a mask of horror and an ethereal head striker stashed for possible strength glitching an item later in the game. On the way two million gold was gambled on amulets producing some interesting items; an assasin one with teleport charges, a +3 to fire skills with life one, an 18 resist all barbarian one and a second Nokusan but no improvement on the 8 resist all 29 mf currently being used.

Not to be daunted going back to something I have tried before. Of course its never made it through hell in any tournament yet but I always have fun with it.

Re: The Exposure Tournament

I seriously cannot wait to enter this tournament. I have (hopefully) the final section of the CPA exam tomorrow and then some other stuff to take care of. I'm thinking sometime a week or so from now looks like a good starting date to shoot for.

Now for my build, I'll just throw out my ideas and see what you guys think. My first choice would a frenzy barbarian that makes liberal use of war cry (like what ChrisTheMean has) or maybe I'll give another berserker a go. I was also thinking about a fire based trap assassin with death sentry and blade fury to help out with fire immunes. Or possible a sorceress that utilized hydra and frozen orb with a strong investment in static field.

Re: The Exposure Tournament

bladejj,

I would start out with the sorc. She'll be faster and less item dependent than the barbarian. If she makes it, voila, but if not the barbarian can be a safer (due to war cry) alternative. I just think you should try her first due to the possible speed of play and him second because it is likely slower. But then again I have not played a frenzy barb in a tournament before. Good luck!

Re: The Exposure Tournament

[HIGHLIGHT] R.I.P. Blink a Dual-Claw Assassin clvl =15 Barracks, A1 [/HIGHLIGHT]

I became discouraged about playing my fledgling bowazon in this tourney, since at least two strafazon were well ahead of me. So I decided to park my Amazon, Limber, and researched another character to play.

After much equivocation, I decided to try a Dual Claw Amazon. My theory was that 5 pts in Weapon Block and 1 pt in Cloak of Shadows would provide protection, with occasional use of Fade. I was unsure whether I could use traps -are they a summons? -so I decided to design a build without them. Dual claws are fast but with low physical damage -so my plan was to go with the fire and lightning dual claw skills on the Martial Arts tree. Investments in Phoenix Strike as a synergy and Venom would increase her damage, if my assassin ever get very far.

Well, she didn't get very far at all. Even by the middle of Act 1, she was becoming a fairly weak character. I have no experience with a Dual Claw Sin and I think the Weapon Block skill may have undone me - in teh Barracks, Blink was surrounded by skeleton archers and those lightning bolt-breathing monsters with bad posture. WB seemed to keep her in constant Block Recovery and she couldn't attack. DEEDS. at Clvl 15 in the Barracks, Act 1 Normal. Embarrassing.

Well, I experimented with a build I had never tried before and flopped. For this tournament, I think a character build must have loads of damage and needs to adopt a play style or strategy that avoids being locked into constant hit recovery when they get surrounded. A Conc Barb might be the ticket. The Slows Missiles skill of the Amazon and the Necro curses should also be weighed heavily as you think about a build - the lack of a meat shield is a real problem.

I may reenter again, or reactivate Limber - but I'll give that some thought and wait a little while. Good luck to everyone!

First, good luck on your CPA exam, guy.

I too considered an Orb/Hydra build, but I concluded that clvl 24 was a long way to go before getting one of my primary skills. I could not imagine facing Duriel with a Sorc that had only one point in Orb, and with no Merc and no Shield.

Having just lost an M,A. Sin very early, I think that a ranged character would be safer than a melee character. Your BFury/Trapsin sounds like the best of the three builds you mention.

Re: The Exposure Tournament

I've noticed no one removed nispart to deeds section. If someone please update that so table reflects most recent events.

I won't be entering my current toon yet. In a week or so I should know if it ok to participate again. Mean while I'll continue my progress without entering.

Current toon is a strange choice. One that seems rarely seen outside single player. I thought it be a challenge to complete the build using this rule set. The build I'm playing is a Kodiak (WereBear using Hunger). I've got a thing about underused builds. Should this attempt fail I'll try another rare build, The Spearzon.

At least I've got some ideas. Even though they are sucide missions.

Re: The Exposure Tournament

Wow, CRAZY!! Good thing you made it through.

They way I usually handle situations like this (hopefully before I am completely surrounded) is to start by spamming Mind Blast at my position. This stuns the monsters, pushes them away and hopefully gets some of them to start fighting each other. Then I cast CoS (if I haven´t recently, so i´ts still on its timer) to blind monsters outside the MB area of effect (especially important if there are ranged attackers.) Finally, I aim at a monster at the edge of the pack in the direction I entered this place from, and can hopefully Dragon Flight to safety.

Re: The Exposure Tournament

RabidWolfkin progress has been unlike his previous lives. Upon reaching six he had two topaz chippies, so went and power shopped a 2 socket helm for him. So every boss, champion, unique, super unique at last had 18mf on.
By the time got to blood raven had that number up to 37. Charsi didn't want to hand over the 3s ring mail at all took nearly 50 visits. By level 12 have the ring mail and helm filled with chipped topazes. Now all I can do is hope for good gambles/dropps.

In previous tournaments where mercs and summons were allowed act one was basically killed by a poision creeper. This time the wolf got the first 6 points and the synergy is getting the rest but since can't use it to kill with it is more trivial than before. As before it was a more passive build let merc and creeper kill until it was nescessary to get more involved. Since it only him this time paying more attention to equipment, skills, and stats than I normal do.

Was up to 82mf by level 16. The countess dropped a nef and ith. Level 17 came and spent roughly 80k on gambling . Was happy with the results 93 mf and a Rare Maul (the 3 chipped large axe was slowing down). Looking forwards to getting rabies next level yet will just use it on mobs that either out number me greatly or champions as normal mobs are being melted atm by feral raged auto attacks.

Skull Grinder
Maul
Two-Hand Damage: 36 to 52
Durability: 58 of 60
Required Strength: 69
Required Level: 3
Mace Class - Normal Attack Speed
Item Version: 1.10+ Expansion
Item Level: 21
Fingerprint: 0x8b47349c
+1 to Strength
+22% Enhanced Damage
+23 to Attack Rating
Fire Resist +6%
+7 poison damage over 3 seconds
10% Increased Attack Speed
150% Damage to Undead

Will finish out act 1 tommarow curently reached the outer cloister wp.

Re: The Exposure Tournament

wikkid, I look forward to your progress. When I chose my build, I selected from among BF/trap assassin, rabid werewolf, and sorceress, so I am eager to see how your werewolf turns out. :)

My BF/trap assassin is doing well. It's slow going, because I am past the point where BF is a quick killer and not yet to the point where traps are quick killers, but I am pretty confident in my character so far. One false tomb is clear; I will update my score after Duriel is defeated. That battle has been looming on the horizon of my awareness for most of Act 2, but with the way gameplay has been working lately, I think it will be fine.

You forgot about Static Field, which pretty much beats all boss monsters in Normal difficulty almost by itself. I'd be more comfortable about facing /P8 Duriel as a sorceress in normal than any other character type.

Re: The Exposure Tournament

@jiansonz: Any of those three skills alone would have saved me a lot of headache. I was trying to get along without CoS and MB, and I hadn't put a point in DFlight yet. All three of them will have points soon, hopefully before I face the dolls in the durance of hate.

I really like that idea of the blade fury/fire trap sin. I don't have much experience with fire traps (except for fireblast), and that sounds like a great excuse to try them out. Blade fury with knockback makes for some decent crowd control, too.

Updated table (including the change to Nispart).

A fair number of characters don't have an up-to-date score, including a number of recent deeds (may they rest in peace). Instead of throwing a bunch of question marks around, the ones I updated either keep their last known score, or they get a score that is equal to their level. That's almost certainly an underestimate, but I'm not going to make up numbers.
