The Exposure Tournament

Re: The Exposure Tournament

An update at long last:

Pandora, the lonely barbarian, has slogged his way through acts 1&2. Nothing to notable danger wise, but some pretty decent finds:

Early on I found arctic armor and belt, which give a nice mf bonus and some decent resists as well. I actually managed to find 2 jewels of envy by the time I hit the cold plains, which made most of A1 pretty easy. I have found about 12 sets and 4 uniques, none of whice I am using besides arctics. My first circlet was a 35% mf one, so that was lucky, but I traded it for a 2 socket +3 polearm helm that I found once I got the cube and could make some savage polearms. I decided to go for a point in Find Item, partly just for the corpse removal, which I was glad to have, as I got unravelers in every single tomb. I used a normal attack through most of A1&A2, to save my mana for horking, which seems to have paid off pretty well so far. Only skill so far that has gotten more than 1 point is BO, but I'm only a little more than 1 level from 30 :) finally...

I meant to take Dury at P3, put kinda forgot to change it...oops. But it was pretty easy anyways, It took 5/8 of the potions my wussy belt holds, but I didn't have to go back to town. Nothing dropped but a polearm with 195 durability :)

I'll tell the build in my next update, when meph is dead, but if you put 2+2 together you can likely figure it out.

Re: The Exposure Tournament

I decided to give Hypatha the assasin nothera spin. Clearing the barracks and moving on to the jail I encountered two NDE's, both from cold enchanted skeleton archer packs, their slowing effect really surprised me, and got me thinking*.
Deeper into the jail Hypatha met her doom at level 18, when facing at (yet another) cold enchanted boss. This time it was one of the misguided-type and it was too much for her to even have the time to retreat.

Though she had high life, good killing speed and decent equipment(besides my terrible luck in aquiring mf items) she had a real hard time in the jail when bosses came around and she eventually died. Maybe I'm playing her wrong.

Since I haven't added myself to the table yet, I think I'll just restart with another toon and pretend this never happened

*So, I said it got me thinking. Beyond the obvious defence loss no merc/summons bring, the shield loss is a bigger loss than I first though. No block is a big deal for a lot of characters, and we're also missing out on one of the (imo) better items you can plan an untwinked character to wear, and that is rhyme! Apart from over all very nice mods it provided probably the only really easily achivable source of CBF for a untwinked toon. Rhyme seems perfect for a PS'er and many others that don't swing a 2-hander.

So I'm wondering, how are you all working around this? Being blue really gimps the gameplay for melee fighters. How do you beef your defence when no merc/summons or even a tiny piece of wood stands between you and all assorted projectiles of death?

CoS was a bit too expensive to use extensively at my low level, but that could be a partial solution, but there's still bosses. For other characters I don't know. Howl? Conversion?

I will do some planning and give this another try, it's a fun idea to force your character to play all on his/her own :)

Re: The Exposure Tournament

There honestly are not very many amazing solutions to your problem. AI affecting skills are great for many situations, but not all. AI solutions are also not always feasible early on as well. CoS, IMO is probably one of the best AI skills out there, I would have no trouble saying it is the best if it did not cause game crashes on occasion.

To touch on your CBF problem as well: keep in mind that freeze effectiveness is somewhat based on your resists. So you may want to pay more mind to that Cold resistance stat than you normally would.

Good luck on your next attempt.

Re: The Exposure Tournament

I decided to try again and went with a Necro named Jimbo. My 8 month old son is named James and he's been spitting out a lot of bile the last few days because he's been sick so I figured a poison necro would be best. He's had trouble with Mephisto and Diablo (single digit lightning resist) but otherwise he's done fairly well. He found The Diggler, which does wonders for both early game resists and is good for its ITD for Poison Dagger for the whole game. He also found a Lenymo sash and a good MF pair of gloves and amulet.

He's just run the Bloody Foothills and cleared it out, getting to level 33. Act V should be a breeze in normal since most monsters there have poor poison resistance. I think his main curse will be Dim Vision. I have never used it before and he's not fast enough to outrun most creatures.

edit: forgot to add that he's already found Cleglaw's Pincers, which my strafer never got her whole journey... Ugh!

If it's not too late to enter the tourney, I'd like to sign up. Love the challenge of restrictions in HC, LOL.

Re: The Exposure Tournament

Thank you for the invite.

Quickclaw the Druid grew up a loner. with no family or home to call his own. He was raised by the forest, nursed by the wolves and warmed by the sun, growing into a force of nature. Sensing the great evil overtaking Sanctuary, he leaves the forest with only what he can carry to the Rogue Encampment.

Re: The Exposure Tournament

Hey everyone. I sadly must report that Rufeo was slain in the Catacombs. It was pretty much a matter of time until no CBF and no FHR got him killed. I opened a door, went in, and got ambushed by a cold enchanted pack of rat men. I burned all my potions and got a tp up but couldn't make it in. Rufeo was fun, and I had zero hope that he could make guardian so the loss isn't that painful.

I am re-entering with an assassin named Gil-Galad. She is currently level 34 and sitting at the RoF way point. Gil-Galad is a trapper, hoping that CoS, WB, MB, and a ranged attack will carry her to guardianship. So far it has been pretty easy, though the blue pot addiction is really annoying. Her main weapon right now is a wand with 80 mana. I will post a comprehensive update of her progress when/if she makes it to NM. Good luck to everyone still participating!!

Re: The Exposure Tournament

RIP Rufeo! Looks like Gil-Galad has a better chance at Guardianship anyway. Good luck Norcim!

As far as my progress, I have uploaded a few shots of my tournament characters. I say characters because a few days ago while playing my poison necromancer Jimbo I realized that a sorceress might be a good time. I looked on the guardian compilation and noticed that there is a lack of Blaze sorceresses in the mix. I knew Jiansonz had done one and liked it, and with the stipulation that the character can't have a shield and "running away" was a good idea, a Blaze sorceress seemed natural. So I'm playing them both through alternating between them and have run them both to act I NM.

First for Jimbo: here is a picture of his Lenymo drop. I know it is rare but unfortunately fairly useless except for the mana boost, which is why he used it early on.

Here is a picture of his The Diggler drop. It has nice resists and ITD. Gotta love that for poison dagger, especially early on.

I had a tournament guardian named Minime that focused in Confuse and Iron Golem and used it to great effect. Sometimes though you have to be careful with Confuse since it tends to draw enemies from several screens away like here. Lots of running and poison explosions later and the mess was finished and we could move on.

Duriel was fairly easy with Jimbo, as Poison Dagger hit hard and Decrepify took the sting out of Duriel's attacks.

One of the funny things about Diablo II is the to-hit calculations against inaminate objects in act V. Really, my character's dexterity is so bad that he can only hit a stationary door half the time? Really? As you can imagine, Jimbo's physical prowess was pretty bad by this time so poison immune objects are not easy to destroy.

Finally, in one of the many choking death scenes so far for Jimbo's enemies, one of them kindly dropped a nice Necro dagger. CBF rules!

At this point I had taken Jimbo past Baal and the Cow King and through to the Black Marsh WP and to level 50 where I took a break to focus on my new Blaze sorceress, Ginger.

Ginger employs many techniques to dispatch the monsters that block her path, which I will show as her journey commences. One of them is the back-and-forth, used here against Hephasto, who didn't stand a chance. But I get ahead of myself with that killing technique teaser.

First I'd like to show you another fairly rare drop, Biggins' Bonnet. Useless though, sadly. I'd have taken Sanders' Cap far before this one.

By the time I got to Andariel at level 20, Blaze was sitting pretty at 8 hard points and the big bad demon went round that blood pool less than twice at /P8 before going down. Nice! I found out along the way fairly early that Blaze stacks so if you rerun your tracks on the same spot several times, stuff starts going down really fast. Handy if you have the time to run a couple back-and-forths quickly before the enemies get to you.

In act II, my favorite tactic was to start up a blaze and freeze enemies in the flames, and freezing the enemies was especially important since some of the more difficult monsters (Unravelers namely) didn't follow very well into the flames. I tried area saturation which worked sometimes but in others the darn beasts stayed put and kept raising skellies and mummies. So I used this Mana stick to regen my mana with a quickness and keep them frozen long enough to kill. It ran out of potency by the end of act III but was real nice in the tombs where the unravelers were a pain otherwise.

Duriel was too dumb to stay out of the blaze but I had the players setting down a bit because I wasn't sure how long it would take otherwise. Not long.

Act III was rather uneventful with long swaths of the forest engulfed in flames. Most enemies in this act were keen to follow Ginger in direct lines, and those that didn't were kind enough to keep to Kurast areas, and Ginger had already reached level 30 and could use Frozen Orb on them to great effect.

Mephisto even at /P8 fell in seconds to the moat trick and several back-and-forth passes along his favorite steps, leading to a huge blaze. Of course, Ginger got out of there before he made it too interesting, and he died in short order. I know, the moat trick is tacky but with bad resists I didn't feel like pressing my luck.

Act IV was easy as well, though I relied a bit more on Frozen Orb since many enemies are fire resistant in the act. Diablo dropped three useless unique items. He died to a beastly combination of all three elements: Static field to about 25% health combined with some frantic running (shown) and a couple of orbs to the face. Easy.

Act V and Cow King were boring enough to not even have any photos to share. It was nice to see how fast Frenzytaurs pooped out in a gauntlet of flames with a level 22 Blaze (19 hard points plus 3 on a Leaf staff). Even champions were no match for a scaredy-cat sorc who likes to walk on hot coals.

Both characters have completed all quests and touched all way points along their respective journies.

Re: The Exposure Tournament

Tournament ending anytime soon? If not, I think I will join with a Necro... or maybe a 2 handed pally

Must be hard to manage without the main things ie no shied/summons/reruns

I guess my strat would be to gather as much MF as I can for the bosses since it's a one shot chance at something good :nervous:

Nope. It ends when the thread dies or no posts in 3 weeks etc.

Join up and good luck :)

Re: The Exposure Tournament

Gil-Galad has reached Lut Gholein in NM!

Now for a quick recap of her adventure:

(All gear readouts and current stats will be in the next post)

Act 1. No problems at all in this act. I used two wrist blades with ctc amp through the majority of the act. This with BoS and some CBS served nicely. I tried to avoid talking to Kashya, put she was too persistant and gave me a merc at level 15. Fortunately, a fanat boss pack in the tamoe highlands dispatched of her. She killed 0 monsters. Andy dropped the artic belt, which I comboed with the armor that had dropped earlier for a nice deal of resistance and MF.

Act 2. It was slow going in the beginning as my light resistance was a whopping 10%. I was able to buy/gamble boots and gloves of fortune. I was still only using normal attack, BoS, and CoS with the occasional CBS thrown in, as mana permitted. My MF started paying off in this act, as I encountered 3 unique amulets. I kept thinking each time that it would be the Eye of Etlich, which would have rocked. I was sorely disappointed in the 3 Nokozan Relics I now have, though I saved one to use on Diablo later. In a stroke of luck, the very first circlet I gambled had 30% MF. Once LS was available, all points went there, and my blue pot addiction took a turn for the worse.

Act 3. I don't remember much from this act. I had one stair trap, but 2 mind blasts later I had some willing converts. Meph dropped nothing of note.

Act 4. Tired of my mana problems, I shopped a wand with 80 mana, which made life easier. I also shopped a wand with charges of lower resist to use on Diablo, but I neglected to look at the level req of 36. I would face Diablo at 35... I also decided that I needed a belt with more slots, so I started gambling belts (I didn't have the str to gamble plated belts.) I scored a beauty, which has since been upped and personalized. Diablo was pretty easy. I put on the Nokozan and just cast LS. It took a while, but I was never in any danger.

Act 5. I love this act in normal because you go from level 35 to 48. This made LS into a machine of destruction. I also started paying much more attention to my trap placement, which resulted in much more damage at less mana. I would try to line baddies up, cast traps beyond the monsters I was then seeing so that once they were dead the traps could shoot further forward. Also, the range on LS is rediculous. I would often find screens of dead monsters well beyond where I placed traps. I finally was able to get a p Amythest here and upgraded my belt. I spent some time with Anya, scoring 2 +1 assassin skills claws, and my current boots. I gambled a pretty nice circlet, said some nice things to Larzuk for 2 sockets, and got them. (I spent probable 45 minutes shopping for a 3 soc helm, but never found one. I gladly traded 24% MF for the mods on the circlet.) I only used the claws to prebuff BoS. I also made a Malice claw at this point. Baal and his minions were easy. I broke the wand of LR out for Lister and Baal.

Cows were really easy. However, the King was immune to lightning, and my fireblast was too weak to damage him. I had forseen a problem like this, so I placed a point in dragon talon and equipped the malice. He went down nicely.

Act 1 NM. Pretty easy here, though I had my first NDE with a lightning enchated tainted in the catacombs. I got a full juve in just in time. I had a great drop in the jail, which with a great wyrms ring and my circlet I have 400 mana. I sold my mana wand, and have been rolling with my skills claws since. Swapping my gloves for the frost burns left me with -2 cold res, so I shuffled some charms around to get it positive. I have been pumping fireblast lately, though at this point the malice with DT is still the best way to dispose of the occasional LI. I think that even with terrible AR malice and DT will be invaluable for LI/FI and bosses. I may add a few more points to DT at some point if I feel it necessary. I lucked out with a 4 socket gothic plate in the cold plains, and had it filled with ptopazes by the outer cloister. Andy dropped me nothing.

My biggest concern now is resistances. With fade they are pretty good, but I'm not yet ready for the slow run speed and trap laying speed. I plan on crafting some caster boots and blood gloves for boss battles soon.

Gear readouts and current stats will be in the next post.

Good luck to all remaining participants!!

Re: The Exposure Tournament

Jimbo has finished off Andariel and Duriel, securing a few nice items along the way. Unfortunately the circlet and gloves were both geared more for a melee character. Jimbo only went into one false tomb because for the most part of the act, at least in the inside areas such as tombs, the skeletons are very poison resistant and thus Jimbo used Lower Resist as his main curse, increasing his physical danger greatly. Hopefully Dim Vision will get some more play beginning in Act III.

In that false tomb he got an Io rune and a Hawkmail to get a source of CBF. Both Duriel and Andariel were done at /P1. They take too long to kill otherwise with Poison Nova.

Also, Ginger made good progress as well, continuing forward and killing Andariel. Her drop was 3 S/U because I played her on /P8 and she still went down in a hurry.

Some of her nice item drops included some gloves and three runes from the Countess. She also faced her first Fire/Cold Immune. In order to dispatch him and avoid the wicked FE/CE blast, she took him to 33% with Static Field and the remainder with well placed stabs with the Malice Kris.

Ginger is far safer than Jimbo so I have hope she can go the distance. Jimbo is just tough without any tanks. Possessed champion monsters posed a major challenge for him in act II. Will Attract on a nearby monster work against them?

Ginger, level 53 Blaze Orb Sorceress, NM Lut Gholein[/highlight]

Re: The Exposure Tournament

Sweet! Glad i stumbled upon the latest thread post! I'm definately in, and this will be my first try at singlepass SP

I don't have the runeword mod installed, but i guess with singlepass this wont be much of an issue? meaning not too many nice runes dropping i imagine.

hmmm. thinking maybe a poison nec sounds fun and very challenging, so that's it! hope to make it out of act1!

Nova_Scotia will be my nec name
starting now :O)

Re: The Exposure Tournament

RWM is definitely still very useful, but its pretty easy to install and could be done at any point if you change your mind.

Welcome, and good luck with your first attempt at single pass!

Re: The Exposure Tournament

ok so quick update, as its my first thought i would get it in quick so icould get on the board :O)

nova_scotia clvl 12, stoney field. 19pts

full clear and players8 so far. the only real challenge so far was coldcrow and her pack of cold arrow freaks. man, poison dagger nec so far with no shield lmao! this is going to be tougher than i thought :jig:

good start for the first night though....

Re: The Exposure Tournament

Is anyone still playing their characters? I am!

Jimbo is level 73 at the Hell Cold Plains WP. He is going to get pretty fast I think as I have dropped the players setting to /P1 for hell.

Ginger is still alive too, at level 60, NM Kurast Bazaar. I need to find a Lum (Memory staff) or else her kill speed is going to start to slow the farther she goes.

Neither character's gear is as good as I'd hoped it would be at this point but they're both still alive so hey, who cares!?!

I'll post better progress results and some pics when I'm home, but I think the tourney ends today if someone doesn't post so I'm going to make Morathi pay attention for a while longer yet.

Re: The Exposure Tournament

And they say that no summons are allowed,

RISE , RISE FROM THE DEAD MY TOURNAMENT

Haha, a new entry, we'll see how it goes.

Hahaha my bad .

Have been very busy IRL. Started a full time job, so i don't have much free time at all to play.

Still lurking strong though .
