@Sint: I didn't know the "savage" recipe could produce elite polearms. Is that true?

As for shopping, I hadn't really thought of shopping one, although the prospects of one rolling elite, rolling hyperion spear or thresher, rolling 40%IAS, *and* rolling high ED% are pretty low; I think that would be a lot of shopping. I suppose that would be the smartest thing to do, but I honestly don't have much patience for shopping (much to my detriment).

Quasi-update: both Duriel's Shell and Toothrow dropped in the Countess' Tower -- the latter off a rack.

You can't get an elite. The best you can hope for is a savage partisan of alacrity(20%)

I am not 100% sure that this would beat the DPS on your current stick, and it is not very likely to roll. I seriously doubt that one without IAS would beat your current stick, so I don't think its really worth trying at this point.

@ kestegs: the rules didn´t make the reroll necessary, but i played the whole act on /p8 and i´m just not comfortable with dropping the player settings. so the real reason was my stubbornness.
i just spent the last three hours in act 2 btw. 1 hour to kill rada and everything up to and incl dry hills. ~30 minutes to clear halls of the dead 1 + 3 and around 90 minutes and 500k ingame gold on repairs and merc revival on one room in the halls lvl 2

with one of my two hdins i rolled a savage partizan of alacricity btw -.-

Superb imbue, kestegs. That's the kind of item that can really make a difference.

Krupa, you are a very determined, dedicated player! I'm impressed. Repeating the Andariel challenge on /p8 and then doing Halls fo the Dead in Hell (I never do that.

There is some confusion. My current merc weapon is Hwanin's Justice (I have actually found two):

Damage: 42 To 159 (100.5 Avg)
Base Weapon Speed: [0]
+200% Enhanced Damage
40% Increased Attack Speed
+330 To Attack Rating

With the nice ED% and IAS% it is doing well at the moment. This weapon is not an end-game solution, though, because set items cannot be upgraded. Since the mercenary weapon is one of the most important items in my medic's arsenal, I have been gambling/imbuing/finding any potential hyperion-spear-to-be or thresher-to-be. The one I posted and used my socketing quest on was the best candidate for upgrading that I currently have, in my estimation. It will be upgraded and used as soon as I have the runes to do so. Until then, I'll keep using Hwanin's. I hope that makes more sense. :p

I too found a hwain's pretty early on, I think in act 5 normal. It would be awesome if it could be upped, I used it until I found husaldo evo. Which has goon potential as an upgrade, I just don't want to drop the runes on it ATM, so we'll see what happens after I finish my tower runs.

small update before i forget things as i won´t have time to play this weekend:
Danny did clear the Caracombs lvl 3 successfully and now i know exactly what that group was, i made a screeny of: 2 boss packs of those ghoul lords type monsters and also a champion group of ghouls

act 2 proves to be very hard so far. up to radament there was no problem and rada himself was easily overcome too (despite his vicious mods)

rocky waste held nothing worth mentioning, but in the stony tomb the problems started. a lot of horrors were there (the monsters themself :P). they either have a huge magic resistance or have an immense lifepool. danny almost couldn´t touch them. the merc had to kill them while danny was tanking or smiting them through the parameter (some useful tactic i picked up when i was running my ow-frost-zealot through classic). since the beginning of act 1 the drops were bad and this streak didn´t break yet...

the dry hills were conquered next and the halls of the dead waypoint had to be collected. the reviving things are a pain, but the climax thus far occured when danny tried to clear halls of the dead lvl 2. in two consecutive rooms were sarcophagi. those things spit undead out faster than he could kill them, so he had to leave the first be. in the second room however there were two boss packs of those dreadful reviving fiemds coupled with one more normal one. one was cursed (which seems to be triggered with their magic shots) can´t remember the other, but it was dangerous. danny lured the revivable skeletons out of range to kill them, but the sarcophagus produced more undead. so those things had to be overpowered no matter what. 500k (of 600k) gold for merc revival and lots of time later danny separated the bosses with a doorway from each other and could stunlock them to get the kill. there was no time to take a picture while keeping the merc alive and the undead away.
far oasis -> maggot lair: the lair is far from a good location to be spinning hammers. the merc had to kill most of the time. luckily i had made a black battle hammer (it seems a fitting base, as he is a smiting HAMMERdin) and could work a bit with the CE charges
lost city: danny feared this place for one reason. magic physical dual immune bosses. of course he did encounter them and sadly he forgot to provide a solution. so he postponed them for after the ancient tunnels (maybe something will drop...). danny encountered a lot of lovely packs here (these things are the reason i still play this game). they could have 2 hitted him, but dim vision and smite saved the day. pack1 pack2
but nothing did drop in the end. he almost hel'd his merc treachery to make a duress in it instead for the OW
but then danny remembered the story of another hero of the past: ThisIsHuge the frenzy barb got rid of the PI corpsefire, by equipping a rogue with a ctc amp bow. so he went shopping for some weapon with this mod. while doing that he found a fools dagger type of vileness (stopped monster from regenerating their life). this could work, but does it work with smite? (it does, but the fools mod helped to land some charge attacks just to be safe) so he tackled the MI/PI
the venom and holy freeze aura chipped away the life slowly but steadily until he died.
so far there were no towers to overpower...
another MI/PI showed up, but in the meantime a ctc amp weapon was found

in the valley of the snakes danny finally found one tower to overpower - the screenshot function didn´t work or i pressed the wrong button...not sure currently - but no picture. the tower fell faster than its respective nightmare cousins.

the temple itself was easy to be honest. in lvl 1 there was one conviction mob, but not elemental enchanted, so no biggie and with 30 dr their charges were neglectable
fangskin was also showing off with his conviction aura. but luckily he spawned in the lower corner, so danny could first kill everything else while he was sitting around with his companions blinded. the moron could tank him very well while danny was using his lvl 10 resist lightning aura to overcome conviction and up his light resist to 85%.

i did not have any worthwhile unique, set or rare drop, but was lucky with the magics. one magic ring turned out to be a scintillating ring of the apprentice (10 fcr 12 @) and i also found a magic ghost spear, which had to become a craft

Congrats all on the progress! Very impressive indeed.

Heracles + merc have completed the next task!

The rest of Act 3 and all of Act 4 (aside from the DeSeis Labor) were of little concern for our hardened warrior, and not worth mentioning... aside from the mention about not needing to be mentioned.:whistling:

A little worried about the Deseis Labor, Heracles had been picking up every spear and polearm with sockets since Act 1 NM. Only one was found, and a very useful one at that. A 4os Lance was socketed with Sol - Eth - Ith - Sol. Fortunately for the merc, res was of no concern for the merc of level 63 (75 @ res naturally), so he retained a Skin of the Flayed One (a second one was found with 7 % LL, and the extra 2% remains helpful), as well as donned a rare melee coronet with +max damage, cold damage, +AR and 6% LL. Lack of life leech was of no concern on the weapon. :alright:

Heracles geared up with his best combination of items, resulting in +2 all skills, ~+250 life (final count of 2240 after BO), ~+150 mana (~380 after BO), combined with slvl 2 Natural Resistance and Battle Command was sitting at 75/75/75/36 resists, plenty of FRW from slvl 1 Increased Speed and rare eth boots (awesome 20% MF + 39% LR boots, esp since they have repair every 33 sec [may be a little off on the numbers though]) + Twitchthroe. Topping the cake was the hurt stick, as always. The upped Bonesnap truly is a beautiful weapon of mass destruction.

Tackled the CS at /p5, slow and steady per usual. Snagged a level after the Grand Vizier and almost got the merc up a level too, but ended up having only DeSeis left without the merc leveling. Went to the Outer Steppes and had the merc clear a couple of bosspacks to give that little extra boost in exp before taking on DeSeis.

The fight was quite anti-climatic. Turned on /p8, popped the seal, and lured two of the DKs at a time, until only DeSeis was left.

At this point, Heracles stood stoically watching his merc avenge past commrades with an honorable and commendable fury. DeSeis stood no chance.

Went back down to /p1 after DeSeis. Plowed through Diablo in about 25 hits and not even close to an NDE. One rare dropped, the rest were magic. Same happened with NM Meph. Even with ~75-100 MF for the boss fights, and Quest kills.:scratchhead:

Heracles went ahead and helped the Bloody Foothills live up to their name. Ran Eldritch and Shenk until clvl 66, and will continue to do some more runs to restock the bank. Heracles is getting more rares from these two than the last two act bosses.

Ready or not Baal, Heracles will prevail!

Just a small update today.
I was looking forward to the dark passage labor as no other.. (not). So I prepared myself (see the Kris of Terror?) and went in with all available minions so that they could draw some attention. As you can see it took only 2 corners for me to get stuck on a staircase :scratchchin: I took the screeny after I used the other stairs to get around this bosspack.. but darn! that wasn't boding well. And indeed.. 2 corners after that I ran into a mana burn pack of inflicted and I got lucky my raven, merc and spirit caught up with me otherwise I would've started potting like crazy. And then it happened...
The cave opened up, I got more room to run and the monsters tended to focus on the merc and spirit. I ran the wrong way a couple of times, but never got stuck and before I got into another tight spot where a screeny would be required I found the exit! All minions gone, but also all pots still in play. The beginning was hartstopping, but the end was anticlimatic.

[HIGHLIGHT] NO, MF on charms does not count for your +200% MF for the Blister Lister labor. The rules clearly state that the +200% MF must be on your armor, jewelry and weapons.

First, I continue to enjoy the updates. I am so delighted that this tournament appears to have become a fun experience for so many of you.

I am finally getting some time to play, after an exhausting travel schedule.

Lizzie2 has a good Durance 2 map (in Normal Difficulty), so I spent quite some time running Meph to improve my gear for the Wirt's Revenge and Deathtrap in Drifters labors. I have been dreading the Wirt's Revenge Labor and planning for it all through Normal -it may be no big deal for a Sorc or HolyShock Paladin but its one of two labors where my Javazon can't use a javelin and her powerful offensive skills.

Even though I dropped down to /p1 before spawning Diablo, the battle lasted quite a while, maybe 5 minutes. I found my best configuration was to have my javazon and valk get in Diablo's face and have my merc attack from Diablos rear where he would not get wiped out. One big problem was my chance to hit - it seemed like I connected on 1 of 4 swings. My 432 life and maxxed fire and light res helped a lot, but I still had to frequently swallow red potions and an occasional purple. I returned to town 5 times to revive my Merc. In the end, though, Wirt had his revenge - while my Merc lay dead once again, my TalTalTal Wirt's Leg landed the fatal blow.

Ironically, Diablo also had his revenge - he dropped world-class crap.

I've begun gaining levels in A5. I put on my speed gear and a wand with Dim Vision Charges, and removed my Merc weapon and unsummoned my Valk for the Drifter Cavern Challenge. However, I forgot the Stamina potions, LOL - don't forget the Stamina potions! I felt very stupid walking through parts of this labor. Anyway, I hit Glacial Trail entrance, and must have defined almost the entire map before the Drifter Cavern entrance appeared. I walked to the entrance, regained my stamina, and descended. I started throwing Dim Vision randomly off-screen -this probably made a difference. Dim Vision got me through two tight spots and the chest was activated. I weapon switched and introduced the growing mob of monsters to Mr. Javelin.

Megara is doing well and spent a lot of time in Normal before finishing off the imbue and Anya quests, while I was waiting for my next Skunkbelly tourney character. Now in NM, she completed the "Dark Passage Quest" pretty handily, with a bunch of stamina potions she just ran through. In fact, she went on a huge drinking binge, taking 24 hits of stamina, thawing and antidote potions along with some for the trail. With teleport, it would have been far too easy. I actually did it 3 times- the first time I still had orb on left click and she inadvertently orbed off in one direction, so I rerolled her map and did it again but the second time I forgot to strip the merc of his weapon. So finally I rerolled again and did it as required. Each time was pretty smooth and in fact the middle one the exit was was remarkably close to the entrance.

She tried "caress Andy" in NM as a warm-up for Hell just to get a sense of what she'll be facing. We'll see if that preparation helps later!

She's been running Andy for a while in hope of gear improvement, as she can run Andy with good MF and also take advantage of the quest drop. She's got a set of non-metallic gear (not as hard for a sorc as other classes!) so she's prepared for the Kaa labor once she's worked through A2 NM. I'm actually using her as a general purpose MF-er as I'd like to keep my old 1.12 stashes separate from 1.13, so she's building up a good collection of 1.13 gear for other 1.13 characters' eventual use.

Still the huge thing looming over her head is Hell Ancients, still a long way off! At some point I need to do some Lower Resist experiments with a SC character to see what to expect there.

Lizzie2 keeps on buzzing along and has made it to Lut Gholein, NM. Although, the fact that she's a clvl 51 and Purple Locusts Megara is a 68 at the same point gives me some pause.

Baal bit the dust, and Lizzie2 took a run trough normal cows just for the exercise - LF Zons are God's perfect build for Cow level. A1 NM brought the Dark passage Labor, but Lizzie got through it fine. After reading the posts in this thread, Lizzie also quaffed 24 stamina potions before venturing into the Underground Passage. I made some wrong turns but found the Dark Woods entry without too much hassle.

Andariel was tougher than I expected. I am feeling a bit puny and am dreading the Kill Ancient Kaa task. I have no obvious weapon for it -a 4os Composite bow is my current leading candidate. Lizzie has no attack rating and her offensive skills are useless without a javelin or spear.. I haven't even found a four row leather belt yet. I have a lot of work to do in A2 NM before I face Ancient Kaa the Soulless.

Well done, don't worry about the levels! I seem to have adopted a "be massively overlevelled to make the labors straightforward" strategy. I ran normal minions + Baal a lot, before saying goodbye to the wonderful ability of Static to sliver /players 8 monsters. I built up some MF gear to give some gear options. I was (secretly) hoping for a full Irathra's set for eventual use, but of course since that it was I was hoping for, I only have found the amulet and helm so far... She did at least find Bloodfists which will serve her quite well. As a result of all the levelling, she and the merc are pretty strong now.

A javelin-less battle against Kaa is daunting. How about a strong Valk for the Kaa task? If you don't already have a good investment in Valk, the Peace runeword will give you one and then if you switch out of it but have a single hard point in Valk she'll hopefully persist. But then again, the Valk may not last long at all, it's hard to tell! If a Riphook drops somwhere, that would be great...

[HIGHLIGHT] NO, MF on charms does not count for your +200% MF for the Blister Lister labor. The rules clearly state that the +200% MF must be on your armor, jewelry and weapons.

Great progress all!

So, Internet Explorer crashed before my update was posted, and I don't feel like doing it again. If I get a wild hair before my shift is over today, I might edit/update it; otherwise, the nitty-gritty is the table update for Heracles' level, and some noteable finds during Act 5 NM MFing, Questing and such. Heracles will remain in NM until he has gained another level.

Laying of Hands (end game gloves!), Spire of Honor (Merc), Sazabi's Mental Sheath, Haemosu's Adamant, some rares and two 1H "Echoing" swords on switch weapons. Also, some luck with bows - two Skystrikes, a Magewrath and Lycander's Aim. I see a bowazon in the future.:smug:

I've got +6 in Valk, +2 in CS and +1 in all other passive skills. Without upgrading present gear I will only have +2 to passive skills when I face Ancient Kaa. I am contemplating investing all skill points from A2 level-ups in Valk and maybe running some of the lost tombs to level up 1 or 2 more levels -but I won't get lvl17 Valk by then.

I can't count on a nice bow dropping - but I hope something drops in A2 to improve my non-metallic arsenal - or my merc's damage, for that matter. :doh: Who's the blockhead who came up with this crazy Ancient Kaa labor in the first place ? :rant:

Yeah I'm gearing up for him too.. I haven't made much progress, but I ran Andariel quite a few times to see if I could get some better stuff. Don't know how to tackle Kaa in the first place, but with the Blade of Alibaba and the Tarnhelm I found I already have the 200MF needed for the Hell Lister labor!! :thumbup:

(tarnhelm 31 + Milabrega's shield 20 + Nagel 30 + greaves of luck 30 + ring 11 + amulet 12 + gloves 15) = 149 and the Alibab will cover the rest easily. I also socketed it with a 10MF jewel so that I have some room if I want to wear a better ring or amulet :)

Acts 3, 4 and 5 were a breeze for Trevor in every sense of the word. Hurricane was so efficient at killing the monsters that I normally found myself holding back so that the mercenary could get most of the kills. (And Hurricane isn't even the strongest skill at this point - I maxed Tornado first!) The highlight of Act III, such as it was, was finding a decent shield (Steelclash) in the jungle. There really weren't any challenges otherwise.

For the fight against Diablo I followed the tournament crowd and socketed 3 Tals in a Wirt's Leg - had to run Tristram about 10 times to come up with a 3-socket Leg. It's hard to judge exactly how far down one can take Diablo and still avoid accidentally killing him in some other way. I was cautious about this so Trevor ending up dueling Diablo for a couple minutes, armed with his Wirt's Leg.

Had some excellent luck gambling in Act 5 -- while trying to improve Trevor's MF an Amulet of Luck (29% MF) was gambled. Scored this rare club in the same gambling session:

I outsmarted myself for the Glacial Trail / Drifter Cavern Labor. I thought it would be a fine idea for Trevor to sprint through those areas in Werebear form - after all, with the extra life from bear form, even a hit from Blood Lord types would not be enough to send Trevor into hit recovery.

One problem with that strategy - in wereform a character cannot cast Terror (I had shopped a wand with Terror charges). I found this out while surrounded by Snow Drifters in Drifter Cavern! Fortunately all that was needed was to shift back to human form and then the Terror charges worked as planned - but there were a few anxious moments there!

Hurricane and Tornado took care of the Ancients with no trouble - not even a single potion consumed during that fight.

In the Throne of Destruction Trevor battled the waves of Baal's minions all on players 8. That's not normally how I play against Lister and his minions, but I thought it would be a good idea to start getting in practice for the Hell Lister Labor. I was casting Tornadoes as fast as possible for this battle. They were just barely sufficient. I really think I'll need to get better at separating the Minions in order to have a chance in Hell difficulty. Perhaps I can practice that in Nightmare difficulty.

Baal was his usual annoying self - but with a good drop, dropping both the unique battle axe The Chieftain and the unique hatchet Coldkill.

Trevor still has a lot to do in Normal difficulty before moving on - he has yet to speak to Anya so there is all of Nihlathak's area to clear - after leveling up a bit more first. The quest rewards all have to be cashed in - I've already got a Gothic Plate armor set aside that will probably be the target of the socketing quest reward. And probably I'll try rolling a few more Savage polearms - the merc won't be able to go on forever without life leech and I can't count on a super polearm to drop right away in nightmare.

I've also enjoyed reading everybody's updates - a lot of interesting stories in this tournament.

I'll update before Kaa. I'm pretty scared to go against him, mainly because I still don't have a good way to kill him. I'm thinking of making a Malice runeword, but that means I have to get close to him (or my merc, but I think he'll kill my merc pretty quick).. anyhoo we'll see what happens.
