Socketing a superior item

I finally bit the bullet and upgraded my Lem runes to get the Pul I needed for the Gloom armor I've been wanting. I have the perfect armor for it, too

Superior Great Hauberk
Defense: 537
Durability: 56 of 56
Required Strength: 118
Required Level: 56
Item Version: 1.10 Expansion
Item Level: 86

+7% Enhanced Defense
Increase Maximum Durability 12%

...except that I can't socket it with the Cube because it's superior, and Larzuk will automatically give it 4 sockets. Is there any way to get 3 sockets in this, or do I need to keep looking? I also have a 3 os Kraken Shell, but the defense is lower and the Str req is much higher, so I don't really want to use that.
 
larzuk gives max sockets to white items, so this would get 4
the cube recipe wont work on it, because it is superior
there is no way to give it 3, sorry
larzuk gives 1 socket to rares and uniques
larzuk gives 1 or 2 sockets to magic items, with a 50% chance of either happening

So larzuk will always give you 4 sockets in your hauberk, so i'd say that your going to have to find something else to gloom.
 
You can try socketing it with the cube recipe. The problem with that is that it has 1/6 chance to get 1, 2 or 3 sockets, and 3/6 chance to get 4 sockets...but its better than nothing.

the cube recipe doesnt work on superior or low quality items
 
That's true, but a 1600+ defense armor on a zealot or Conc barb isn't going to take a lot of hits, and isn't going to have to be repaired very often. It would be annoying, but I figure I can count on finding a Ral before it breaks.

How do you guys know which item to socket, taking into account the repair cost of the item? Which variable/s determine/s the repair cost?

It's already socketed, so you don't have to worry about the superior. :)

I think I might wait and see if I can find a non-superior Archon Plate with enough defense ot make me happy. I think I could find enough Rals to make it through okay, but I don't really want to chance it and blow all my gambling money on repairs.
 
Making Gloom in that superior dusk shroud instead of non-superior with same base defense will give you 47 points more def...im sure you can decide yourself if it is worth the trouble of cube repeirs :)

Basically, never make RW into a superior item, unless it is for merc or grants indestructible/self-repair mod
 
Since this thread concerns the topic of "Superior" items, I would rather post this question here than make a new thread... unless nobody answers here...

Is it possible to have a 510 defense Superior Dusk Shroud.
Provided that the base defense is 467, from a possible range of 361-467.
And that the Superior modifier adds 9% defense.

467 x 1.09 (or 109%) = 509.03
Is this rounded up, even if the decimal is less than half of 1 defense?
I know it is usual (if not always) that computations like this in the game is rounded down, right?
So in this case, it should only be 509 defense, right?

I've noticed that myself on a couple of items.

For Example:
Superior Sacred Armor
Defense: 631
Durability: 33 of 60
Required Strength: 232
Required Level: 66
Item Version: 1.10 Expansion
Item Level: 85
Fingerprint: 0x65ad499
+5% Enhanced Defense

The defense on this should only be 630.

I can only think of two things that might cause this. Either this is the only time when the game rounds up. Or it's like when uniques get the ed modifier, they get the maximum base defence + 1.

Its sorta in the medium low range for archon plates 410-524 are their min/max spawns. Too bad I dont have a higher armor ratiing one.

If that is the case, then it goes that...
(467 + 1) x 109% = 510.12 OR (Maximum Base Defense + 1) x (100% + %ED)
It is then rounded down, even if decimal value is greater than half of 1 defense point.

This is verified by the Superior Dusk Shroud I posted in post #9 of this thread.
It is Superior +10%ED...
(467 + 1) x 110% = 514.80, but the defense of the armor is only 514.
