Smite Question

Hi, was planning on making a paladin using the Rift runeword, and was wondering if smite works with chance to cast from an item?

It does not. You'll have to use Zeal.

According to Arreat Summit: "Smite works with any "X% Chance to cast level Y (spell) upon striking" ability on your weapon."

Ah yeah, I got the question confused with +elemental damage (also on rift) which doesn't work with smite.

Zeal is still a better option though, as it will deliver the elemental damage from rift as well, and it will trigger more frozen orbs than smite. The frozen orb proc on rift is a chance to cast on attack, rather than hit, so the fact that smite always hits doesn't help you get more orbs. Zeal's faster attack speed will generate more orbs.
