Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

The notriously slow Thomh has finally sent Binks to Jiansonz and Dooku is back under my control. Dooku is the character I`ve played the most, so it`s feels right that I get to play him in the last act.

Looking forward to it.

Congratulations to both Guardian-making players and good luck to the rest of you. Too bad there won`t be a sept in this tournament:(

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

Binks received.

This will be interesting,
I have never used Twister, Tornado or Hurricane. I do not even know what type of damage they do...

I am going to travel quite a bit the following weeks. I hope we are allowed to take our time with this act.

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

I`m sure Skunk said we could play until July 31st, so you should have plenty of time.

Just a few thoughts. Don`t use twister much. The stun length is so short and Binks has so much killing power you probably won`t need the stun. KEEP CYLONE ARMOR AND HURRICANE ACTIVE AT ALL TIMES!!! Apologies for the shouting, but it`s what makes a windy strong. You`ll probably have some aiming problems with tornado to begin with, but I`m sure you`ll handle it.

The only real problem I can see for you is a CI/PI enemy and you simply can`t kill it with your current set-up (unless I`m remembering wrong, which is quite likely:)) That`s going to be a major problem for your full clear style as I wouldn`t be surprised if you encounter a Cold Enchanted Ghost or something like that.

I hope you will make a guardian of him:)

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

...
Seriously, I think that its likely that there will be 0-1 DEEDs in this last Act, given the quality of the players and the builds. The most acute danger is what happened to Soulmanz and Offee: a large, overwhelming mob (including many casters) that descend on a character rapidly. I guess my prediction for mostly likely spot for a DEEDS are (1) the Ancients (2) Frozen River (3) Throne of Destruction and (4) Frozen Tundra. But, I really don't think a death is very likely.
...

Sorry about ver noob question but where DEED comes from?

Good luck to all remaining participants!

When you die in Hardcore, it says something close to:

"You have died. Your deeds of valor will be remembered."

So people call dying in hardcore "deeds" because you get the "deeds" screen when you die.

Congrats, kestegs! Two down, four to go!

@ jiansonz: that build, if done right, is extraordinary. PIs will be your only trouble.

By the way... given that everyone has seen every character they're going to see at this point, no need to keep builds secret any longer. Feel free to post anything you want, now.

And yes, the survivors have until July 31st to complete Act 5, if need be.

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

Wow, a Wind Druid must be one of the most powerful untwinked builds you can make in the current game version! Binks has cleared the first three outdoor areas and their bonus dungeons on /players 5, with only slight trouble against some ranged attackers. There were PI Frenzytaurs in Abbadon, but no boss.

I have replaced some things in the merc´s sockets:
* Shael instead of Amn in the upgraded Kelpie Snare.
* +ED jewel of Envy instead of Shael in the crafted Armet

I´ve also made him a Malice stick, in case a PI/CI boss shows up.

Even with all his power, I think the most important safety skill in Binks´ arsenal is the Grizzly from his helm. Holy Freeze from merc, the points in Dire Wolf and the Oak Sage (as long as it lives...) makes the bear quite sturdy.

Binks plays out quite a bit like a Golemancer, but with more stuff do do in the fights once a stable fighting situation is established. It´s not the most exciting character I´ve played, but it´s OK.

And that amulet! One of the best and most useful I´ve seen:

Stone Wing
Amulet
Required Level: 48
Item Version: 1.10+ Expansion
Item Level: 66
Fingerprint: 0x25d5a132
+8 to Strength
Damage Reduced by 2
Lightning Resist +13%
Cold Resist +32%
+1 to Druid Skill Levels
Level 1 Teleport (12/22 Charges)

Easy access to Teleport will certainly prove useful when the going gets tough later.

Just like I was sayin'.

And... that is a *nice* amulet.

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

Palpatine is a Guardian!

With a lot of Dim Vision, Bone Prison and Bone Spear, most of the act went pretty easy. But he's not fast and the merc was struggling at the beginning to stay alive. The most dangerous parts were overlapping champion and boss packs that couldn't be Dim Vision'd. The closest call was multiple quill rat boss packs in the ice caves somewhere. Bosses were not a threat generally, although the Ancients took some real careful play with the leaper and WW guys not staying in their prisons. I didn't want to kill him after he's come so far!

The A2 helper had a normal Kelpie which I wanted to upgrade but I never found a single Lum the whole tourney! (I could have made one from two Ios, though. I was thinking about it before I found some good ethereal weapons for him.) But I did find soon enough a couple of ethereal polearms and a cryptic ax got 5 sockets so he had Honor, I think just like I made for Dooku earlier. I put him in Treachery and socketed a Tal Rasha's mask so by the end of the act he was doing pretty well at helping and not dying.

He was a real help in the throne room- I totally forgot that the revivers in the second wave were magic immune until I noticed how slowly they were dying! I think those were the only magic immunes I saw the whole act.

All the quests are completed except the personalization. I killed Nihilathak, being very very careful with the snakes. The item I kept for personalization is a Wizardspike and I didn't find anything that would be a good item for Palpatine or the merc for personalizing. I could personalize the Wizardspike just to finish the quest totally, even if he won't use it.

This is the first time I've played through 1.13 untwinked and the rune drops are better, just like everyone says they are! Not counting the runes that went into items for characters, which was a lot I think, I still have Mal, Pul, Fal x 2, and Ko x 2 left over, way more than I've ever seen with what is really almost just one character questing through the game. I did do lots of rerunning and levelling with different characters, but no matter what that's a lot of runes!

It was nice to finish with any character, but Palpatine was a tasty treat for me since I had him 3 times total and I did a lot of shopping for him, even if I didn't choose any of the skills!

Congratulations for Kenobi and Organa! I played both of them in Hell and so it's great to see them finish too! I'm rooting for all the others left especially Dooku since I didn't get to play Binks or Chewbacca.

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

congrats to all who made it through so far

if it is any consolation to myself after dropping with probably the strongest character I had played, the exams I had been preparing for at the early third of the tournie have finally been graded, and I passed them all

probably not worth killing offee!

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

Congrats WestXylophone (and SoulmanZ, too)!

Headed out on my trip today, and I may or may not have time/opportunity to check in before July 31st... so to our remaining players, good luck!

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

Congrats to Kenobi, Palpatine, and especially Organa (As I played her twice and chose her (somewhat underused :p ) third power)

@Jiansonz: Pindleskin dropped that amulet in Nightmare...and of course, right after I crafted Binks a +elemental skills ammy

WoRG

It´s a monster drop? Even more amazing in that case. When I get my hands on rares of this caliber, they are nearly always gambled.

Speaking of gambling: Binks has been very unlucky with +skills clubs, or at least it feels that way. He´s gambled away 800k four times now (I gamble away what´s in his inventory when it´s getting full). The clubs go for 40k apice, so that´s 80 clubs, and no Gaean or +2 Druid club yet. :p

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

Congratulations to the Guardians, well done!

Chewbacca is progressing and has defeated the Ancients. It's been slow steady going but so far nothing too scary aside from the Ancients, which was a long battle until I got the first one down. Ranged attackers have been problematic (oh to have access to Taunt!) as Howl is helpful but not nearly as useful as Taunt in those situations.

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

Chewbacca has killed Baal and killed Nihilathak to become Guardian Chewbacca.

(He hasn't personalized an item so that quest isn't greyed out but I think he can do that without getting killed since he won't need to leave town!)

I had been playing Chewbacca earlier mainly as a Concentrate barb with Berserk from time to time, as I found Concentrate feeling safer. But in Act 5 it was clear that his short War Cry and Berserk were much safer and speedier as Concentrate just took too long. I used the socketing on the Cruel Glorious Axe that jiansonz shopped and got 2 sockets, now filled with Shaels. That gives a lot of quick kills so that was much better than the Concentrate option, particularly with Howl and War Cry.

The Anya reward barb hat was +2 barb skills, which was useful for a slighly better BO but that was only worth the trouble before big battles. I was hoping for a Battle Cry helm to use against Baal but no luck there.

Nihilathak had vipers so that involved extreme care. With a character that had less life I would have rerolled the level but I decided to tread carefully through, much to the merc's repeated demise.

Going through the WSK was Howling whenever there was the slightest danger of losing control of the battle. The minion waves went well, with some separation and picking off. That probably wasn't necessary but I wanted to be careful.

Baal went OK and was basically just slug and chug (potions) until he went down. He dropped Plague Bearer (for Kenobi?) Rockstopper (for a merc?) and Stormspike (not useful but making a three unique drop, pretty good for almost no MF.)

Good luck to the remaining characters!

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

Nice to see Chewie howling and brawling his way to Guardianship, and nice to see that humongous axe being put to good use.

Binks the Wind-Druid has completed a few more areas. He now has the choice of taking on Nihlathak's Temple or Ancients' Way next.

While his Cyclone Armor is good for elemental protection and the build is strong, he still needs to watch out sometimes. A very nasty boss pack of succubi can sure be a threat. Just look at that barrage of shots at the poor bear! As you can guess from the archer shown in the screenie, the pack had Fanaticism, in addition to being Cursed. Grizzly died in about a second, and he was >3000 life. Caution was adviced. It took me a long time to nail that pack in a reasonably safe manner.

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

I´ve played Binks' penultimate session - Nihlathak's Temple areas. Going with /players 3 now.

The zombie garden was quite scary. It was hard to keep the merc's life up, while at the same time trying to be left alone (with footwork and Grizzly summoning). Hurricane does nothing against the CI undead, but Tornado did a good job once I had a situation stable enough to use it.

First big level had Frenzytaurs, beetles and apes (all of them LI). An early Cursed bullhead pack made me go another way. I met one minion (with obvious mana burn ability) from another Frenzytaur pack. Managed to avoid the rest of that pack as well, for the moment. Much easier to fight them later, when you have the space to string them out.
(BTW, that Cursed bosspack was also Extra Strong (ouch!), so it was great that I managed to get out of their sight before I had any secure ground to fall back on!)

Second level had Flayer blowdarters, goats and Spawners. Spawners are CI, so lots of Tornado use against them. Easy level overall.

Third level had ghosts, Flayer Shamans and (gulp!) Tomb Vipers. I switched my fabulous 'Druid skills and Teleport ammy' for an Amulet of Life Everlasting (DR by 24). But my main way of defending against the vipers was to avoid moving along the poison trails (including about 10s after each one of them) and only rarely sideways through the trails. I also used corners and aggressive Grizzly recasts to cut down the number of poison shots they would fire. Merc died about 7 times, but Binks was never in real danger. The Evil Urn spawned Vipers :scared: - good thing I had prepared an escape TP right by the urn.

Nihlathak was FE + MR. It took me a while to find a Tornado path that would hit him (I wanted some distance because of the FE thing), but once I did he was soon toast.

During this session, I found Lem + Io runes. So now I actually have the runes for Delirium, a RW I have never made.
I really want to try it out (for the merc) so I have also muled in a 'socket helm kit', in case a suitable helm drops.

The game crashed the session before this, after I had cleared about 90% of Ancients' Way. I am not sure how much of it I want to clear out now to consider myself as having completed it, but the Icy Cellar is still left to do in any case. It may get really dicey to move around here without killing stuff, but my Teleport amulet should help a lot for the safety.

Binks the Wind Druid, level 86.7, Hell Ancients' Way/Icy Cellar next.

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

Well done! Those tomb vipers are very scary.

Delirium is quite a powerful runeword and I've found it useful on many underpowered builds. It seems like overkill with Binks' strength! But in HC, one can never be too careful. One thing that is a little dangerous about Delirium is that in the throne room, sometimes confused monsters don't count as being alive for the purposes of spawning the next wave. So you can end up with monsters from two waves around at the same time. It doesn't happen often but it is good to know that it can happen! For a quick Baal run, it can actually be helpful to speed the waves along but generally I consider two waves a concern for HC questing play.

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

Thanks for that info.

I don´t think the throne room thing will be a problem for me, because the only monsters I fight in there are Colenzo´s pack (with Colenzo last, and he can´t be Confused), Achmel and his Unraveler buddies. I always lure the last three packs out of the room, 1-2 monsters at a time.

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

Good to see another guardian, and more progress!
