Should I always play the latest version of LOD?

Should I always play the latest version of LOD?

Or should I stick with an older version? I think I am playing version 1.07 is this a good thing or a bad thing, or just a thing? I see that there is a version 1.10 and a 1.09. What is the general consensus on this one? Thanks, Nationwide!

There are many good and bad aspects to the diffent game versions. On the whole, it goes a bit like this:

1.07 - Hard to play and level, but you can find some really good items off racks (thats a no, basically)

1.09 - Was very popular, this is the main patch i played, but had its fair share of bugs. Easier to get a character to a very high level, but harder to get through quests

1.10 - The most recent version, the version which most of the forum (me included) now plays. If you want to trade or get items off people on these forums, you will have to be using this version. Much more balanced gameplay, seems a little easier to complete quests, as your character levels more easily, but overall harder than 1.09, due to character changes. Synergies are amazing. Read up on those.

So its your choice, really. Wait until someone else gives an opinon, though.

Just another note on that: even though 1.10 is IMO the best patch of them all, we Single Players have to deal with what we call the FE bug. Basically it allows Fire Enchanted boss monsters and some other cases outside of Normal difficulty to deal their death explosion damage at random (especially if it is the Ancients).

I've only had it affect me once, but it was because my Assassin's mercenary killed the minion of a FE boss while it was next to me (in Hell mode, Act 2). I lost 1000~ life from the explosion despite having 75% fire resist and 10~% physical damage reduction. The only reason she survived was because I was playing HC and had pumped Vitality to very high levels.

it actually depends on yourself. if you're playing alone. then, go with whatever version you wish. but if you want to trade, make giveaway and stuff, you'd better off using the latest version (1.10) since most of us here use it. it's easier to find an mp game too. also, most site will update to the latest version, so it's kinda hard to get info on previous patches. it's like buying a mobile phone. i'm using an ericsson's r520, been using it for years. it has everything i need. there's nothing about it that i don't like. but when i want to send it for services, the spare part is really hard to come by. my friends kept persuading me to buy a new model, but hey this one's still functioning, why should i bother? :D.

also, the unsocket recipe is probably the most innovative thing that blizzard ever came up with  .

I find 1.10 quite interesting because of the new cube formula, runewords and the fact you can upgrade runes. Aside that, the difficulty and synergies in 1.10 is just awesome. I would still argue that 1.07 can be much harder though then 1.10 since bosses could spawn with totally impossible immunities and teleport (which healed them so fast its not funny anymore).

1.06 was a really fun version as well while playing classic, if you ever get bored of LoD I can recommend making some classic characters on 1.06.

Has that been completely twisted by bnet yet? I figured they'd have managed to remove the socketed items, without removing the modifiers by now.

that was only in the beta. you still see the mentioned of "eth bugged (insert item here)" in some of the other forum here. *cough barb forum cough* :D

As said all versions have their pros and cons.
For forum participation, you will be well served to point out which version you are playing if it is not the latest, as people tend to generally assume it is. You will get less useful advice if the advisor is not aware of your version.

A few of us addicts actually play several versions, swapping between them as the mood takes us. But that might be further down the track for you :)

Just to comment on your version. You are probably playing the most difficult version of Diablo. Magic find is broken, so a lot of the unique items cannot be found in the game from monsters. However 1.07 has some items that are much better than in the later versions. For more information look in the faq, there is a 1.07 guide in there.

Every patch changes the game by quite a bit and in every patch you can do things that you cannot do in other patches.

For endless cow runs, you cant beat 1.09. however i'd go for 1.10 though, as now most of us (except a few rather odd people going for lvl 99 characters in 1.09b)
2.20 is the least bugged version, and is more balanced, with few overpowered builds, and people no longer just run 1 area for EXp all the time, due to changes in exp and difficulty of monsters.

I thought I had version 1.07 but when I went to apply the patch for version 1.10 it said I allready had the most current patch. The reason I thought I had 1.07 is becuase on the top left of my screen it says 1.07. Any ideas on how to find out exactly what version I have? Thanks, Nationwide

When you play the game, in the upper corner right it says which version you play. So if, in your case, it says 1.07 you should be able to download a more recent patch.

Easiest way to make sure is to connect to battle.net. Thats of course assuming you bought the game (and you should, there is no excuse). It will update to 1.10 automatically if its older.

Wow, Blizzard seems to be really busy patching the game during the last days. My latest version is 1.10
Yea, 2.20 is much better.
Anyway, the only advantaeg to 1.07 are some good BOTD items from what i here. no other reason to go there. update to 1.09 or 1.10, depending on what you want out of the game and this forum.

It says I am playing 1.07 in the upper corner but.....

I have tried two different patches;

LOD Patch_110 and LOD_109d and when I try to update it says;

Blizard Update v.2.72
This patch does not need to be applied to the game. The Version of the game you have installed is more up to date then the patch.

Filename C:\Program Files\DiabloII\Game.exe
File Version 1.0.10.39
Patch Version 1.0.10.39

????????? Go Figure. Any Ideas? Or just don't worry about it. Is there any other way to tell what version I am playing?

I play all three patches actually, their are upsides to all of them. Their should be a version switcher linked somewhere around here that will allow you to play all three w/o three different installs.

Does anyone know where I can get a "version Swither"?

Perhaps I should try that instead of reinstalling this game and really mess this up? I just think that something is wrong. My ATMA isn't working right either. I cannot drag and drop, and now after putting in 350k into the bank, the bank is froze up and won't open. Sounds like an Savings and Loan scam to me!!!
